Charming little game. But rogue-likes are a terrible time waster genre for masochists, losing your progress is not fun, and there's not enough content in this game to justify it being a rogue-like in the first place.

Overview A fun, fast-paced immersive sim / roguelike inspired by the Lovecraftian mythos. You play as a librarian tasked with descending into randomized voxel dungeons hidden within dusty tomes, hunting down the souls of three eldritch entities before they escape into the world. The story isn’t particularly deep, but it works well as set dressing: an excuse to explore dungeons, fight monsters, sneak through dangerous spaces, and hoard piles of loot. The game never overstays its welcome and can easily be completed over the course of an evening. In addition to the main story path, which spans four distinct worlds, the game includes two optional challenge levels and an optional world inspired by Lovecraft’s novel At the Mountains of Madness . This extra chapter has you mounting an expedition into the heart of a mountain and returning with the airplane keys needed to escape. Multiple endings are available, and finishing the game unlocks a New Game+ mode with increased difficulty. How the Levels Are Built While its voxel aesthetic clearly echoes Minecraft , Eldritch takes a very different approach to level generation: Instead of relying on noise-based algorithms to generate fully random maps voxel-by-voxel, the game assembles levels from hand-crafted rooms that are randomly connected. This approach slightly limits level variety, but ensures that spaces feel intentionally designed, resulting in more coherent layouts and more interesting challenges. See [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYN0PJOdvzs]this GDC talk for further details. As another nod to Minecraft , players can use dynamite and pickaxes to tear down walls and reshape the environment, significantly increasing player expression and enabling creative alternate paths through each level. This also makes the voxel graphics more than just an aesthetic choice: it becomes a meaningful design decision, shifting the game away from static maps toward more dynamic, malleable environments. Too Easy? If I can offer one critique, it is that stealth is simply too effective. There is rarely any downside to slowly crawling through a level and methodically clearing it, which undermines the horror and hurts the pacing. The game occasionally tries to disrupt this rhythm by introducing enemies that are difficult to either avoid or kill, forcing the player to flee, but these moments feel too infrequent. The underlying issue may not be stealth itself, which is thematically consistent with a frail human facing cosmic horrors, but rather how little the game asks the player to pause and plan. Scarcer ammo, for example, might have encouraged more deliberate, tense decision-making instead of slow and largely brainless progression. That said, New Game+ improves on this aspect, as does the optional Mountains of Madness world, which introduces mechanics such as falling icicles to discourage slow movement. One could therefore argue that seasoned players are meant to seek out these optional challenge levels, while the main story path remains deliberately accessible to newcomers, making the lack of challenge there arguably a feature rather than a flaw.

It's a neat little roguelike, though I do reccommend the game its far from perfect. The first few times you play I think its a fantastic experience, stealthing around enemies collecting artifacts and finding new spells and items to mess around with and try out. Where it starts falling short is in terms of replay, the enemy behaviour is very basic and incredibly easy to get around after you understand it, making the game less so a stealthy exploration roguelike and more of a mad-dash to the end avoiding almost everything, as a lot of the mechanics are half-baked and very surface level. Overall good game, it's a good experience i find myself going back to once in a while, but, I would definetly not buy again for full price.

This game is very good. And it's one of the only games that does procedural 3D dungeons where the dungeons are actually fun and the gameplay works perfectly. The dev has a GDC lecture on Youtube where he explains the tech and it's very clever.

This game is amazing but it definitely leaves me wanting more. The gameplay is simple but addicting. New Game+ is a satisfying challenge for those who find the normal mode to be too easy. The replayability factor isn't really there however due to the lack of content. After a few runs through each dungeon (of which there aren't too many) you will likely have seen every room, item and enemy the game has to offer. More updates/an active modding community could have made this game an all-timer imo but as it is it's still very fun for a couple dozen hours.
