I can play this game again and again and again and again, and it never bores me (the escapes always make my heart pound, still, too). Everything about this is beautifully done. Yes, it has its jank and its graphics aren't exactly breathtaking, but it's an 11 year old indie game--cut it a little slack. Besides, neither, in my experience, have subtracted much from any of my playthroughs. The game still has amazing atmosphere, and any of the ridiculous bugs you might see in the negative reviews are unlikely to happen to you, especially if you play the game normally. Back to the atmosphere--it really feels like you're on a derelict cargo ship. Each area--the crew quarters, bridge, deck 5 exterior, engine room, cargo hold, and lower decks--have their own unique personalities, and so do each of the three random monsters. The map is, as you might have read already, randomly generated, but this doesn't hinder your ability to navigate, as many locations are static. You get the best of both worlds of random generation and a fixed map. This, combined with the random loot and the random monsters and three escape routes, gives great replay value. Doing each escape with each monster gets you nine playthroughs. If you're a fan of survival horror and roguelikes, you COULD NOT find a better game for you.
Monstrum is a product of its time, coming from an era when horror games focused on hiding from terrifying monsters and trying not to be seen. The core gameplay is definitely enjoyable, but it has its flaws. There are extreme frame drops, especially when encountering the Brute, along with various bugs and an overall sense of jankiness. That said, considering it was released in 2015, it still holds up surprisingly well. It's a must play for anyone looking to recapture the atmosphere of early 2010s horror games like Amnesia and similar titles.
this game for me is a product of his time because most of what i liked is from what i feel watching those youtubers playing it the graphics are exactly what gives me this inexpicable aura, i know the game is supposed to be horror but i do feel myself pretty chill when trying to escape the ship i was lately playing this with the purpose of feeling that sentiment, and then getting pretty ecstastic because i feel i dominated the game and finally unlock all three escape routes amazing overall is a nice trip to my past when i was a kiddo who really like it wathching horror games on youtube, such good memories kinda wish the acchievements weren't that broken, but so far for me i already played most of what this game has to offer im happy that doesn't play like trash and gives you like unlimited stamina when running from those ***** so far, go for it
Game is generally very good, although not perfect. The atmosphere, soundtrack, storyline, it is all done very well. There are a few things I would like to point out that would make it better IMO: The monsters in this game are constantly teleported to always be nearby the player. You can be in the upper crew deck part of the ship, then run all the way to the other end near the submarine room to get away from the monster. But in a minute or two, the monster will be back by you again. I understand the reasons for this, to keep the suspense/action up, but it really should be optional. There should be an option to dial this mechanic back or have the monster freely roam the entire ship. With them being constantly on you, it can be really hard to make progress. Also, I thought it would have been cool if there was a rare chance that all 3 of the monsters could spawn during the same game. That would have really been surprising for unexpecting players. With each monster patrolling their own section of the ship, and maybe every 30 minutes they would randomly switch areas. Now that would have been super difficult to beat, but super cool as well. Some other reviewers complain about the lack of a save system, but if you get skilled at the game, this is no longer an issue. People also complain about the ship looking bland or not making sense. Sure, sometimes the room generation can be strange, but they nailed the layout correctly and the ship is NOT supposed to look pretty to start with. It is an old cargo vessel, so its going to look accordingly. The monsters are great, however I refuse to play against the 'Hunter' creature that leaves the bubbles behind. Whereas with the other two monsters you can hear or see indications that they are near, with the Hunter he is in the vents and seemingly pops out at random. Sometimes he will leave the bubbles behind, but other times there will be none and he will come out randomly causing a jump-scare. Sometimes you will run by the bubbles and nothing will happen. Then another time you will walk slowly by them and he will suddenly burst out. The way he functions compared to the other two monsters just seems kind of scummy/unfair. In summary, this is a great survival horror game. Would recommend it. There was a sequel made called Monstrum 2, but it strayed too far from this game's strong suits, which caused it to fail.
