A light-hearted turn based RPG with wacky characters and a pretty funny plot , I'm not gonna say that Epic Battle Fantasy 4 is the pinnacle of gaming but it's not a bad game at all and it's got plenty of content for what is , at it's core, a flash game . Don't go into this game expecting something "modern" all the references in this game are dated and are about subjects/memes from the 2000's and early 2010's (this game was originally released in 2013 for some context). And I'll suggest first playing EBF 3 though , it's a prequel to this game and it's free on Steam so there's no reason not to check it out. All that being said I'd recommend buying this game , especially on sale where you can find it for less than 3 euro!
A long long time ago, when EBF4 came to the flash game universe and when I finished it, I felt realy sad, because it felt like the culmination of everything the Matt had done and it felt like a fitting end to the story that had lasted so long. As all good flash franchises, it needed a proper end. And to me, EBF4 was that proper end. EBF3 practically promised more adventure after defeating the big bad. But, here, you actually get a proper conclusion it felt like. I also want to point out that this was back when it first released the pinaccle of art and mechanics for me. I absolutely loved every moment of it, and fast traveling between the cats felt really nice. Weapons felt unique, the characters were witty and awesome, the story and effects were incredible. Even today, it still holds well enough as a game on its own with its stellar effects and beautiufl gameplay. 10/10 Can I go back in time to experience it for the first time again?
Now i did play the game in its entirety but do take some of my positive points with a grain of salt since i used to play this game years ago in browsers and still have some nostalgia based memories about it. That being said it still didn't stop me from having a couple of negative things to say. First i guess i should say what is positive: The game itself is a lot longer than the previous game, with the previous being about 8-10 hours, and this one taking be about 60 hours to complete (Although technically i played it 3 times for the achivement but it was the same savefile so determin for yourself if you count it as that or not). The grafics and art overall increased in quality showing that a lot more efford was put into this game than the previous one too. There are a good amount of new enemies to fight... The combat still has some smaller flaws, but also certainly is an improvement, though turn based RPGs might still not be something everyone enjoys. Adding a fourth character does feel a bit werid since you only get to use three of them, but at least it increases the variety of playstlyes you can do. There is also plently more optional content that is actually quite enjoyable, with the difficulty in general also being quite balanced. The story is also not a continuation of the previous game and while there are certainly some parts that are still relevant it is mostly its own story. Also the equipment system while it still might feel a bit clunky they did expand it by adding trinkets making it a lot more versatile and customisable. Now, the negatives: My main issue is that a large amount of assets are completely reused from the previous game, with maybe a little more polish. The humor is not as outdated but still a tiny amount imature, though that is certainly mostly because the game is old and a product of its time. Even with fast travel the distances you need to walk tend to be quite long and sometimes a little boring. All in all it is not a must try since unlike the previous game this one isn't free, but it certainly is worth it since the game itself got expanded quite a lot and has a lot more to offer than before.
