Evoland has been sitting in my wishlist for the past 10 years and now I finally decided to play it. EVOLAND 1: Evoland 1 is a parody and doesn't take itself seriously. Nostalgia bait is shoved in your face one after another, in the style of: "hey remember random encounters? Those sucked lol. Anyway the world map will be full of them now.". The game play is garbage for the most part and the most atrocious segment is the Action RPG, which is more reminiscent of a zero budget mobile game. The specific game most referenced is FF7, which I love of course, but it doesn't save the game. 100% in 5 hours, no guides needed. They handled collection well in my opinion. My favorite part was a town rendered in the style of FF7, that was cool. EVOLAND 2: Evoland 2 is a completely different story, they had a BUDGET for this game. They hired an artist and the music is good, the gameplay is overall much better. They copied many aspects over from Chrono Trigger, which fits the theme perfectly. Chrono Trigger is also somewhere at the very top of games on my list, so I'm probably biased. Lots of variety in gameplay, mostly JRPG but we have bomberman, top down shmup, sidescrolling shmup, MTG, platformer, fucking connect three, many more and a bunch of puzzles for some reason (Layton I guess). Basically a bunch of different games a millennial has probably played, with a brief glance at old games like Snake, Pong and Pac-Man. Hard to say which part was my favorite, perhaps either The Anomaly or Antiquity. I even got invested in the story and really hoped to see more of the Magi, seeing that they are basically the enlightened ones of Zeal Kingdom. 100% in 23 hours, I really took my time with this one, didn't want it to end. Collection is a lot of work, but you can find everything without a guide. I spent a long time just wandering around in the present, where even the characters look like they're straight out of Chrono Trigger.

Evoland Legendary Edition – A Time-Travel Adventure Through Gaming History Evoland Legendary Edition is like walking through a video game museum – except you get to touch everything, the museum eventually explodes, and a pixelated knight tells you, “You’re in 3D now, good luck!” It’s charming, nostalgic, and has more gameplay shifts than a Final Fantasy boss has phases. Story The story? You’re the hero. There’s a villain. And something about crystals. But honestly, who plays this for the story? The real appeal lies in evolving from pixelated beginnings to bombastic 3D battles. It’s as if a gaming historian decided, “Let’s throw EVERYTHING in!” Strengths ✔️ Pure Nostalgia From monochrome pixels to HD graphics, it feels like reliving your entire gaming childhood in one go. ✔️ Humor and References The game is packed with nods to classics. From Final Fantasy to Zelda to “We finally unlocked sound effects!” – no cliché is left untouched. ✔️ Endless Variety Turn-based combat? Check. Real-time action? Check. Card games? Why not. Evoland crams in everything you’ve ever loved (or hated). ✔️ Unique Concept The idea of experiencing gaming’s evolution is as fresh as discovering a new save-point system. Weaknesses ❌ Very Short The game is shorter than a speedrun of the first Mario level. Just as you’re getting into it, the credits roll. ❌ Shallow Difficulty If you’re looking for a challenge, you won’t find it here. It’s more of a stroll than a battle for survival. ❌ The Second Half While the first game shines with nostalgia, the second part feels a bit uninspired – like an encore no one asked for. Achievements The achievements are as varied as the gameplay genres in the game. From “Find all hidden chests” to “Win the card game against the NPC who obviously hates you,” there’s a lot to aim for. While the achievements technically shouldn’t be missable, I had to play the game twice because some didn’t unlock on my first run – probably due to my lack of an internet connection at times. So, keep that in mind if you’re aiming for 100%! Target Audience ✔️ Recommended for • Players with a love for gaming history • Fans of RPGs who enjoy jumping through genres • Those who get nostalgic over gaming clichés ❌ Not Recommended for • Hardcore gamers looking for a real challenge • Players expecting a deep story • People who get impatient when a game changes genres every five minutes Final Verdict Evoland Legendary Edition is a charming little adventure that warms your heart while showcasing how far games have come. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a loving homage to everything that made gaming great. If you’re into nostalgia and want a humorous trip through time, grab it. Just be warned: you’ll end up wanting more – or at least a longer second part. 🎮✨ Note: My playtime is as skewed as early 3D camera angles. I played Evoland 1 many years ago on iphone and it was a short game. I had a similar expectation for Evoland 2 and I was apparently wrong. Evoland 2 is a full-scale JRPG game with at least 25 hours of contents. There are many familiar faces and mechanism in the game. It's recommended for any one with a lot of gaming experiences. The story is not bad either. Achievements in the game are not easy. There are a lot of collection achievements and many of them are well hidden. For both games, you can get back to the game to collect missed items after the ending so no worry on missed achievements. Evoland 1 has about 5 hours of contents and Evoland 2 can take about 30 hours for full collections. Both game only need one run for all achievements. Both games run smoothly on steam deck. However, in Evoland 1 I did encounter a case that a story related achievement did not pop when meeting the condition. My suspicion is that there's something to do with the deck's sleep function, but I cannot confirm. After that, I restarted the game and refrained from using the sleep function and no more issues on achievement popping.
