There's a ~5 minute fighting game segment in the second game that actually features motion inputs. It would have been more than enough to have a janky mashing input system, but the devs went out of their way to implement a fireball (and the rest of Ryu's kit). Both games in this edition feature many different genres (often in parody fashion), and all of them are well done. Evoland 1 is a showcase of how RPGs developed over time and has you progress the genre's progression. It's a couple hours of innovative gameplay that's very memorable. Evoland 2 is an actual JRPG style game that has you travel through different times with different art- and gameplay-styles. It throws in a different genre's gameplay whenever it can and tells a generic story that consists completely of references and jokes. It's way longer than the first game and sometimes it drags on for too long, but it's alright. 100% achievement completion boils down to finding every hidden star and card in both games (and a couple extra items in Evoland 2). There's also a couple optional challenges in Evoland 1 that need some extra attention, but everything else comes with going through the story. Nothing is missable. Overall, it's okay.
Evoland 1 is brief and charming, worth a normal playthrough. Evoland 2 is drastically more expanded upon the concepts of 1, turning the breadth of game styles into a delightful love letter to the medium. Evoland 1 had some glaring bugs, ranging from run-of-the-mill jank to achievements not proccing the first time around. Evoland 2's bugs were not nearly as hindering, mostly being the rare visual issue. Any actual gameplay bugs were far less punishing, as save points are significantly more frequent. Evoland 1 has some achievements gated by rough RNG and very unfun grinds. There are also hidden collectables, with some behind completely unmarked false walls. I would recommend only going for a normal playthrough to experience the concepts, finishing in an hour or two. Evoland 2 also has hidden collectables, but the hiding places are mostly intuitive to find even without the later game assist mechanic. The grind-style achievements are either probable to occur eventually from normal gameplay, or are very fast to knock out. 100% completion was doable in 20-25 hours, and I enjoyed the full experience.
TLDR: First game: yay! Second game: nay. The first Evoland game is more of a work of art rather than a video game. It leads you through the evolution of the RPG genre in an incredibly charming way. It loses steam towards the end, but it's a solid recommendation just for the unique experience. Nostalgia straight to the veins. The second game has an interesting time travel dilemma story akin to Chrono Trigger. On top of the different game visuals corresponding to their respective timelines, it also throws different genres into the mix - none of which I will spoil here as that's the main selling point. Unfortunately, that variety comes at the cost of depth: none of the game mechanics feel polished or even engaging. Ultimately, the shallow gameplay drags the whole novelty experience down quite a bit. Personally I couldn't be bothered to finish the second game myself and resorted to just watching a Let's Play before even getting halfway through the game. The story had me hooked, but the gameplay really turned me off.
