Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a creepy, fun ride with a cool story and some solid characters. The gameplay is a mix of creepy exploration and taking on ghosts with the Camera Obscura, and there are plenty of jump scares that’ll keep you on edge. The outfits are a nice touch too, adding some style to all the spooky vibes. If you're into atmospheric horror, this one definitely brings the thrills and chills.

Lore: 10/10 References real rituals done in ancient Japan, I enjoyed the background story of the mountain and its dark rituals as well Gameplay: Solid 10/10 Best gameplay of all the fatal frame games I've played so far. I really love how you can change the angle of the viewfinder, and how distance, camera angle are now crucial factors in exorcising ghosts and not just a "oh you must look at them as close and long as possible to do big damage" thing anymore. Over the shoulder camera is much preferred over fixed camera though this should be the modern standard. Horror Atmosphere: 9/10 The environment is rendered beautifully for a game of its time, the experience and atmosphere while exploring the mountain and interiors really puts you on the edge of your seat. THIS is the ideal kind of horror that plays on your paranoia and dread instead of relying on cheap jumpscares. Jumpscares: 6/10 The jumpscares weren't very scary, or rather I was not frightened that much by them. Maybe I'm just used to FF horror, so this is subjective. Personally, I like how they aren't cheap jumpscares that are just about enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, but not give you a heart attack needlessly. Storytelling: 3/10 I enjoyed the story well enough on its own although some things are very jarring to me. It is an incredibly wasted chance for Hisoka to not be a main character, and her "secret" was very lackluster and bland. Ren and Rui's characters felt very bland and unrelateable, and did not particularly care about how the story will end for them right till the end. When your audience cannot feel any attachment nor care about a main characters' plight and ending, you failed in writing that character. Miu and Miku's backstory were also badly written and butchered, but I will touch on that later. The story did not build up to any urgency for the character to find a special way to exorcise Ose, instead focusing on rescuing other characters instead. In the older games every main antagonist had special requirements to be damageable, this one did not besides being the final boss fight. Very disappointing. Link to Previous Titles: -10/10 As mentioned, Miu and Miku's backstory and story were so badly butchered fans worldwide agree that FF5 Miku never happened. Miku's inability to get over her brother's death in this game has completely destroyed whatever character development she once had in FF1 and FF3. Having conceived Miu through some outlandish ghost incest thing with her dead brother makes it so much worse its irredeemable at this point. Top 10 character butcherments by writers if you ask me. When fans want to see returning characters from previous titles, they want to see how they've grown and moved on with their lives. The perfect example would be Dante from DMC5. Also Hisoka is supposedly related to Rei from FF3, but no mentions of this in game whatsoever. Absolutely wasted two great characters in this series. Overall I enjoyed the game, the story is awful in certain parts but otherwise still enjoyable for a long time Fatal Frame fan.

This is a great fatal frame game and I think dose the series right. The story is definitely the strongest point in this entry as I feel it covers all the bases it needs while still staying on the topic its about. Combat in the game is mostly unchanged from other titles but there is a lot less of it. at lest on my play through I would go almost 20mins before another fight on yuri's story. Its not the most scary game after I would say the 6th chapter because you have seen most types of ghost at that point. the tall woman is neat I never got to fight her but her more random spawn ins is cool and spooky. overall i can definitely recommend this game a lot if your starting the series! Its a solid 8 out of 10 for me.
