Seems like the most important thing to know when considering this game is that it's NOT a conventional jigsaw puzzle. If you're into those and go in expecting to do your usual thing, you'll be disappointed... Or maybe pleasantly surprised, if you're open to something different. Instead of being presented with all the puzzle pieces to sort as you please and a goal image for orientation, you just semi-blindly pick up piece after piece, see if you can find its place this time, and figure things out as you go. Trying to guess what the image is and sometimes only realizing when placing the last piece was part of the fun for me. The special aesthetics are obviously a major selling point for this game. Cool transitions into and out of the menus and levels almost make it feel like you're playing around with some kind of Steampunk device. I liked scrolling around the map to plan my "journey" and choose the next country. Having some geography knowledge probably helps with orientation, otherwise there's some educational value (: The enchanting music and the glassy sound effects when placing a puzzle piece complete the experience. It's not very nice that you can't finish everything on the map without buying all the DLCs, but I guess it was easiest to implement it that way. Also understandable that they want to advertise the DLCs, especially considering the low prices for a decently long high-quality experience. The achievements can all be... achieved? without buying DLCs. I found it a bit too easy to accidentally move the disks instead of the puzzle pieces, but it wasn't more than a minor annoyance for me. It works fine if you drag them towards the center of the puzzle. Other people have struggled with accidentally moving puzzle pieces instead of the disk, but 1. you can just figure out the visible pieces first, 2. you can rotate the disks using your scroll wheel to avoid "misunderstandings". Other than that? I often find games with "overwhelmingly positive" reviews overhyped, but this one deserves them imo. Casual visual search puzzles, generally well-built, and a decent chunk of gameplay. Great for the right audience, but I would offer 2 notes: It's not at all like a jigsaw puzzle, despite appearances. When solving a physical jigsaw puzzle you have (a) the "goal" image of the completed puzzle in front of you, and (b) every un-placed piece laid out on the table, face up, and (c) (for most folks/cases) a very limited number of puzzle-piece shapes that you need to fit together. Glass Masquerade is roughly the inverse. Contra (a), you don't know what the final image is supposed to be. Contra (b), all un-placed pieces are face-down (and in a random orientation) except the 1 you click on to select and flip over and try placing. Contra (c), nearly every puzzle piece is a different shape. Now, one of my core strategies for solving jigsaw puzzles is roughly this: see a gap for an unplaced piece, look to the goal image to see what the missing piece should look like, scan the unplaced pieces on the table looking for a match by the colors/image-fragments onit, mentally rotating as needed. And none of that is even an option in Glass Masquerade . So, if you solve jigsaw puzzled like I do, note that this ain't that. Unplaced pieces sometimes appear mis-scaled before you place them. I played on Steam Deck handheld, so this may have been exacerbated by my smallish screen. But any un-placed piece appears to have a gold outline around its outer edges. Very often, many segments of the outline disappear after the piece is placed. And yet, some remain, because they represent the metal fillings between the panes of stained glass in the puzzle you're building. This means that pieces very often "look slightly too big" to fit into their correct place. This means that trying to match a piece to its correct position is never really a visual search that will generate a 100% match. So you need to look for "fuzzy" matches. These 2 caveats are enough that I personally left the game wishing I had just done a jigsaw puzzle instead. It was fine, but I doubt I will play any more in the series.

One of the first few jigsaw games I've played on Steam and I had a very nice time. Each puzzle is an image of something iconic from the real life geographic region on the in-game map and it truly feels like an international tour of imagery. The stained glass motif is very well done and adds to the challenge of the puzzles - each one took me anywhere from 2 minutes to upwards to 15 for some of the more difficult ones. Bonus: my spouse got interested in it every time they walked by my screen and even sat down to play one for a few minutes. This literally never happens. The BG music was a little melancholy for me, for some reason, and put me in a bit of a somber mood while playing. I'm sure not everyone will have the same impression. You can 100% complete without buying DLC but I do believe you will need to add the FREE DLC. Lastly, I was AFK for a good hour-ish so playtime is not completely accurate. 5/5 - I'm looking forward to playing the next installments of Glass Masquerade and definitely getting more interested in jigsaw puzzles for relaxation and keeping brain matter intact.

This is a really pleasant relaxing jigsaw game. It looks and it's really simple, but I love the ambience of the whole game, really chill and also enigmatic. You're just making puzzles, but it feels like you're doing much much more for discovery, history and humanity! aha There is a lot to do! and everything is gorgeous. Great, beautiful and cheap coffee game.
