Remastered by Double Fine and released in 2015, this adventure game was initially developed by LucasArts in 1998. This version was made with considerable quality of life additions, such as the mouse control, improved lighting, remastered graphics, and developer commentary spread throughout the game. On it’s initial release, the game had small details that could be easily overlooked, like the main character facing points of interest and the minimal user interface, and other points like the atmospheric story inspired by noir movies, fully voiced cast of characters, and an impressive artistic inspiration created such an immersive experience leaves a big impression on everyone that plays it. The game is divided into “years”, each section taking place in the day of the dead, with varied themes and locations, where many puzzles are presented in a fluid way that helps the development of the story. The game can be played in two ways, using the new mouse interface or using the classical tank controls. Both are well implemented and can be switched anytime in game, the same can be said about the graphics, that can be hot swapped with a key press. Manuel “Manny” Calavera is a travel agent and a grim reaper, bringing souls from the living world to the land of the dead, and selling them the best packages they can afford to the nineth underworld where they can finally eternally rest. Changes were gradual, but the decrease of clients and the lack of a driver drove Manny into moving and unwittingly untangling a web of lies and conspiracies that lurk under a rotting hidden figure that manipulates the Department of Death and other sides of the dead society. In a quest to correct the injustice towards a deserving client, Manny will cross the land of the dead with the help of Glottis, an elemental spirit, and in the way he too may find a way to pay his debt and find the rest he deserves. Like other adventure games, Manny is mostly a blank slate. His past is a mystery even to himself, but with the superb voice acting the characters come to life, and your responses feel genuine, with all dialogue written in a coherent way to the universe. If anything, like other LucasArts games, some expressions used rely a lot on word play, but most of the jokes are explained in the commentary tracks. As other LucasArts game exploration is highly rewarding and there are no dead ends, and like other remastered versions of classic adventure games by Double Fine, this version is complete with commentary track, illuminating the inspirations that led the creation of this amazing game. Over the years, Grim Fandango is one game that I return to, exploring all the paths present in it, and often learning something about myself in the process. Although linear, this game presents such a majestic setting, combined with amazing voice acting, a fitting soundtrack, and graphics stylized so they become timeless that I can’t recommend this game highly enough for anyone interested in both adventure games and story based games. This is the kind of game people long for when they say games nowadays are "Soulless" - Grim Fandango is brimming with charm and a unique setting, something that can be clearly defined within the player's mind. It isn't a hodgepodge of the most popular fads at the moment, or an entirely derivative work in fantasy or sci-fi that we often see. It's simply fun to experience the way Manny interacts with his environment, and what that environment is like. It's unfortunately quite buggy and has some moon logic and pixel hunting puzzles, but you can save at any time to multiple slots, and there's a brilliant guide for 100% completion if you ever get stuck, courtesy of the community. Despite that, most of the puzzles feel logical and rewarding, and it's often clear where you need to go next, so you'll likely be wandering around for the item you need rather than wandering around for the plotline to jump out at you. I recommend you give it a try! It took me just under 11 hours to play through the whole game, and I didn't 100% it, so I'll likely be giving it another run sometime in the future.

Grim Fandango? The one with the skull guy? Man, I love that game, man. Who doesn't love running around endlessly, clicking on things endlessly. What a treat! Figuring out these puzzles, like the one where you have to take the balloon to the goop place and then shoot in down the mail shoot was pure genius!!! I wish I could play Grim Fandango every day, but alas, there's not enough hours to the day, man. My favorite part? Oh, you shouldn't have! Obviously, it's when you need to drink the gold-flaked alcohol bottle and step through the metal detector. Good thing there's no fun detector during the game because that thing would be going off nonstop, I tell ya!!! Great game (it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) 10/10! Best point and click out there! You'll be pointing and clicking the recommend game button!!

Man, Grim Fandango is honestly one of the most unforgettable games. A game form 1998! Incredible, awesome! Whoever has ever played in the past will never forget Manny Calavera. This is a masterpiece, which deserves to be remembered and kept with care! I waited a long time for a special sales offer on Steam to buy it, and add it to my collection. Unfortunately, not everything is a happy ending, because this remastered version has some problem where the dialogues are too fast, the movements are too quick. Looking for solutions, I found people commenting that this is due to some issue with the new drivers, since the game is old, it causes a brutal acceleration in the game that prevents you from enjoying it. To solve it, you have to search well and make some driver changes to get it to work normally... and that is a shame, considering it's on Steam, it's paid, so I believe it should have come 'fixed' so that we could just install it and play. Unfortunately, this detail/problem is a shame, and it can be quite stressful...

two big things got me to pick up grim fandango. first, its reputation: it's lauded as one of the best adventure games out there—and i can understand why! second, its aesthetics. there's something endearing about playing a low-poly, early 3D game from the '90s, and its art direction holds up incredibly well. the game's technical limitations tend to compliment its art direction: the blocky models work with the art deco and day of the dead aesthetics, and the fixed-camera 3D motivated every screen to be composed with intent. even despite some backgrounds and assets being low-res, everything just looks really, really good. the soundtrack ties it all together: its dramatic, punchy, and elevates the game. my favorite part about the game was its writing. it's witty, delightful, and really a treat to listen to. i love hearing manny talk and interact with other characters and the world. i love the way that you can't tell who would pan out as a side character or as a main character; everyone is written equally well and all contribute to fleshing out the world and its story. the backbone of grim's story is its characters, and it's a solid structure: my main motivation was to see where the story would lead and what conversations i would get to witness as a player. while the aesthetics and writing make the game feel timeless, the gameplay was a stark reminder that, yes, this is a ten year old remaster of a twenty-seven year old game. i'm willing to place some of the burden on myself: this was the first real point-and-click adventure game i've played, so there was some onboarding in understanding the puzzle structure and design. a common gripe, though, is that some puzzles can get frustrating and esoteric. i referred to a guide often. readability issues didn't help, either: sometimes i would get stuck because i couldn't tell what was an interactable and what was a background element. it was hard to tell what was an interactable and what was a background element. sometimes puzzles required waiting a LONG time to try again, which sucked. that's not to say that the gameplay wasn't all bad, though. when it clicks, it CLICKS. while a lot of the game is composed of linear puzzles, year 2 involved tackling several problems at once and unraveling a web of connections, which was fun to sit back and piece together! the controls were also a big issue for me. i played primarily with a controller using tank controls which, although there was a learning curve, i got used to. unfortunately, sometimes the collision would be buggy and make playing with tank controls impossible. stairs and other areas would be impossible to climb, and i would have to switch to keyboard and mouse for a time. there were also some interactables, like ladders or items, that wouldn't work properly with tank controls, or would be inaccessible without mouse and keyboard. the game can also be a little unstable at times: even though it didn't happen to me, softlocks are a known issue in the game. cutscenes would sometimes hang, and i got a crash at the very end. the best remedy was, unfortunately, to save often, grin, and bear it. while the game's design philosophy was sometimes outdated or at odds with itself, i still found this game to be a fantastic time. if you can look past the occasional bugginess or frustration, grim fandango's a real gem!
