The closest thing to the original Guacamelee where along with gold edition, some additional content that gave more costumes along with some abilities on said costumes, achievements, more combos to mess with, leaderboards for speedrunners, cloud saving and workshop compatible (which is my personal favorite if truth be told). When I first played this back on PS, I played the "SUPER TURBO CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION!" (STCE) despite that I was wanting this game long ago in the past. And boy, what a difference from the way it changed between Gold and SCTE. I enjoy this one mainly for the challenge it gave me compared to the STCE. Guacamelee has a lot of references, great visuals on characters and scenery, amazing soundtrack to go with it and an amazing story to top it off. Wether you aim to go for the normal or the true ending, this is a game I can always recommend people to consider giving a try. The only two downfall I see so far are that one, the fact it may get a little repetitive considering the game is a metroidvania/beat'em up style type of game, and two, if you suffer from epilepsy, please be careful when entering the game. Back then, the game had some awkward way to show off some of the power ups with hard flashing lights back and forth. If you have epilepsy, I highly prefer you choose the STCE since they fixed this there and made a design that's easier on the eyes compared to the rapid flashing for your safety. All in all, Guacamelee is a classic and if you have not played it, please. I recommend you try it.
A Beautiful, Challenging, and Nostalgic Adventure… There are games that entertain you for a few hours, and then there are games that remind you why you fell in love with video games in the first place. Guacamelee! is definitely one of the latter. At its core, Guacamelee! is a platformer, but it's much more than simply jumping from one platform to another and beating up enemies. One of the things I appreciated most is how the game teaches you to use your entire controller rather than just mindlessly mashing the attack button. Every new ability opens up different ways to navigate the world, solve puzzles, and defeat enemies. As you progress, you realize that mastering the controls isn't optional. It's essential to moving forward. What impressed me most was how well the developers designed the learning curve. The game introduces new mechanics little by little, giving you opportunities to practice them before combining them into increasingly difficult challenges. By the time you reach the final boss, you realize that everything you've learned along the way has been preparing you for that encounter. It's a wonderful example of thoughtful game design. The game can be difficult, sometimes frustratingly so, but it rarely feels unfair. (I'm at 99%, and that's okay. I can live with that.) Combat is similarly rewarding. You can't simply rush into every encounter and expect to win. You have to pay attention to enemy attack patterns, learn when to dodge or counterattack, and figure out how to use the environment to your advantage. There were plenty of moments when I failed repeatedly, only to finally recognize the pattern, adjust my approach, and succeed. That feeling of accomplishment is something I remember fondly from the video games I played growing up. And speaking of growing up, the game's Mexican setting and lucha libre mythology made it especially enjoyable for me. I grew up in Mexico watching lucha libre wrestlers on television. I loved the colorful masks, the larger-than-life personalities, the dramatic rivalries, and the ridiculous spectacle of it all. I remember my dad telling me one day that the wrestling was scripted. I didn't care one bit. It was entertaining, and that was all that mattered. *Guacamelee!* captures that same spirit beautifully, mixing Mexican folklore, humor, and the wonderful absurdity of professional wrestling into a world that feels both familiar and fantastical. Aesthetically, the game is gorgeous. The colorful graphics, imaginative environments, character designs, and excellent music all work together to create a memorable experience. The characters are funny and full of personality, whether you're interacting with them as NPCs or controlling them yourself. The animations are fluid, the controls feel responsive, and there's a real satisfaction in successfully pulling off a complicated sequence of moves. Perhaps what I enjoyed most, though, was how Guacamelee! took me back to an earlier time in gaming, when I would spend hours trying to figure out a puzzle, make it through a particularly difficult level, or defeat a boss who seemed impossible at first. There were no shortcuts. You had to learn, practice, fail, and try again. And when you finally succeeded, the reward was that much sweeter. Guacamelee! gave me hours of entertainment, some good laughs, a healthy dose of nostalgia, and plenty of satisfying challenges. It's a game that respects the player's intelligence while making the process of learning genuinely fun. I highly recommend it for children of all ages, including those of us who are still kids at heart.
Absolute all time favorite game. Every ounce of this game is just full of artistic choice and I love the combat. The soundtrack is like the wackiest thing I've ever heard and it is so full of creativity. 10/10 I am going to 100% Super Turbo Championship as well its so good.
I freaking LOVE this game but also ...I hate this game. The artwork is absolute perfection. The music has been a key part of my library for years. The story is cute and I love the little gags and attention to detail throughout this game. But the gameplay, the gameplay is a challenge. As of writing this review I have just under 10hrs to complete the main story, but believe me, it felt like longer. The combos you have to hit especially towards the end, had my wrists sore. As soon as you learn a new move, they give you a new challenge and when you think you have the hang of it, they increase that difficulty x10. They've done a fantastic job of keeping things new and fresh so it never feels repetitive. If you're anything like me you'll have to stop and walk away for a while before you throw the controller thru your monitor. And if thats true, I recommend the chicken costume for getting through the puzzles. But I do honestly LOVE this game and have it on 3 platforms.
