If you loved the demo for this game and are wondering why Early Access is getting mixed reviews, I think I can explain some of it. A lot of people, myself included, start out confused about why their character can’t even walk 4 feet without face-planting and leaving themselves open to attack. It feels clunky and frustrating at first. The big difference is that the devs made the early progression way harder than it was in the demo. In the demo, you could win a few fights, beat the boss, and move up a tier pretty quickly. In Early Access, there’s more going on that the game doesn’t really explain. They added a strength mechanic. When you first start, you’re basically a scrawny beggar with no power because of your flimsy arms and legs. As you fight and burn through stamina, you slowly build strength. And I mean slowly. Once you build enough strength, things start to click. I recommend sparring and making sure you’re actually draining your stamina during fights so you level that up. After that, winning fights and progressing feels much more doable, and you can start looting the people you take down along the way. (grab them with Q and then hold Q to peel armor/clothing off the enemy) Another big complaint has been the abyss. I wasn’t a fan at first either. But they’ve added ways to avoid being sent there. If instead of fully killing enemies you can force them to surrender by holding the tip of your weapon to their neck, that way your soul is pure. You can also pay the shady guy in the back of the tavern at night 10 gold per soul you’ve taken. Just make sure you do it before you die. If you haven’t killed anyone, you don’t need to pay at all. So when you eventually catch a sword to the neck, your soul is safe. Otherwise, the people you’ve killed show up as zombies in the abyss, and in my experience they’re ridiculously hard to take down. Honestly, what this game really needs is a proper tutorial. A lot of people are jumping in expecting it to feel like the demo, and it just doesn’t. Once I understood how the strength system and the abyss worked, I actually started having a lot of fun progressing through the tiers. Anyway, that’s just my two cents on Half Sword EA. Thanks for reading.

Usually I maintain a policy of not reviewing Early Access games since they're not finished products, but there's a lot of bad info and exaggerated claims flying around here in the review section and I feel some level-headed examination of the game in it's current state is called for. In short, yeah the EA release has some big problems right now but it's really not as bad as some people are making out to be. A lot of this is due to some new and frankly quite nifty features the game doesnt really tell you about for some reason. I will now cover some of these points of contention. "THE PERFORMANCE IS TERRIBLE": Yes there is a single map in this game that will tank your PC because the devs made a full 3d background for some insane reason... and that's it. I'm running an old AH 1660ti and besides that map havent had any major performance issues on medium settings. Besides this people with AMD cards have been reporting weird blood patterns that currently dont have a fix and crashes that can be fixed by updating your drivers or changing your DX mode. So pretty standard teething issues for a 2 man dev team's EA release. "MY DUDE FALLS OVER REALLY EASILY AND HIS SWINGS FEEL WEAK": So there are two new systems added into the game that are causing these complaints. The first is terrain physics which become more pronounced if barefoot. People have been running into mud patches without shoes in the early tiers and promptly ending up in ye olde slip and slide midmatch. Use some common sense in regards to footing and get you some shoes and you should be fine. The other thing effecting this in the brand new strength building system that was added. In fairness there is like no info in the game about this massively consequential new mechanic but basically your dude starts out as a wimpy little malnourished medieval peasant and as you do athletic things in game you will increase your muscle mass. Making you harder to knock down and allowing you to use equipment more effectively. People have been throwing heavy armor and weapons on without having the strength to wield them properly and getting clowned on due to their noodle arms. If you do however put in a little bit of work bodybuilding you will discover that weapons are even easier and more smoothly wielded than un the demo. Frankly the amount of precision you can get with a longsword is scary now. "THE ABYSS SUCKS NOW": Yeah this is totally fair. The new zombies that inhabit the abyss are way too tanky and their dumb bite attack that seems to stunlock you to death if you don't have armor is a massive pain to deal with, mainly on the lower tiers. Additionally the progression campaign mechanic where killing people adds in more of them to deal with is very poorly thought out in my opinion. As violent medieval combat is like the primary draw and most fun bit of the game, and it makes progression weird as in later tiers you have to deal with much less of them because people arent dying as much with all the armor. Thankfully you can mostly avoid the abyss if you go out of your way a bit with how you play in the campaign. in summation you may want to wait a while for things to get ironed out by the dev team if you arent sure about buying in right now, as there are some rough areas and things that need elaborated and expanded upon. But saying the game is an abject failure that you should refund immediately and is destined to go down as indie slop is just a massive exaggeration.

Devs are taking the feedback seriously, so I have no doubt the games many issues mentioned elsewhere will be resolved soon. I love the game as it stands on a gameplay level and cant wait to see how it ultimately shakes out

The game is good and very fun but runs pretty terribly at the lowest settings i can hardly get 50 fps while fighting in the slums with a RTX 4070 SUPER, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and 32 GB of DDR5. IMO, wait for a performance patch
