I give them credit for having co-op online mode (although I couldn't get it working). I couldn't quite get into the gameplay loop, which seemed slow and grind-heavy at the start. The game seemed like it really needed a Save + Quit feature and a Resume. I know there were checkpoints, but it all seemed a bit clunky. 3/5

Hammerwatch, developed by Crackshell and published by Team17, is a modern tribute to the classic top-down hack-and-slash dungeon crawlers that defined the genre decades ago. It combines the spirit of old arcade action with modern accessibility, creating a game that feels familiar yet fresh. Set within the sprawling halls of Castle Hammerwatch, players embark on a perilous journey through labyrinthine corridors filled with monsters, traps, and treasures. The game can be played solo or cooperatively, and while its foundation is simple, the experience grows in intensity and depth as players progress through its increasingly hostile levels. It doesn’t rely on cinematic storytelling or elaborate world-building; instead, it thrives on pure gameplay—the rhythmic dance of combat, exploration, and survival. At the heart of Hammerwatch lies its class-based system, allowing players to choose from six distinct heroes including the Paladin, Wizard, Ranger, Thief, Warlock, and Priest. Each class offers a different style of play, from the Paladin’s close-range durability to the Wizard’s devastating spells and the Thief’s high-speed melee attacks. The differences between classes add variety and encourage experimentation, especially when playing cooperatively. Every character can be upgraded with improved abilities, health boosts, and new skills, purchased with the gold and gems found throughout the castle. This sense of progression, while subtle, keeps the player invested as the challenge escalates. Combat is fast-paced and relentless, often throwing hordes of enemies at the player in tight spaces that demand both precision and awareness. Dodging projectiles, managing your attacks, and controlling positioning are essential, and the thrill of surviving an overwhelming encounter never truly fades. Exploration is just as important as combat. Each level of Hammerwatch is intricately designed, filled with hidden rooms, secret switches, and optional challenges that reward careful observation and persistence. Players are encouraged to scour every corner of the map to uncover secret areas containing valuable upgrades or shortcuts. The handcrafted design of the dungeons gives each floor a sense of personality, with enemy types and traps varying to keep the player on edge. There’s a strong sense of discovery that recalls the exploratory satisfaction of classic dungeon crawlers, where curiosity and courage are often rewarded. The balance between danger and reward gives the game a distinct rhythm—brief pauses of calm exploration punctuated by bursts of intense combat. While Hammerwatch can certainly be played alone, its cooperative mode elevates the experience to another level. The game shines brightest when shared with friends, as its balance and pacing feel perfectly tuned for teamwork. Each class complements the others, and the interplay between them—such as a Priest supporting a front-line Paladin or a Ranger covering the group from a distance—creates moments of dynamic coordination and chaotic fun. The cooperative element also adds longevity, as running through the campaign with different combinations of players and classes offers fresh tactical variety. However, playing solo can feel less rewarding. The difficulty remains punishing, and without the energy of co-op synergy, repetition can set in. Some battles stretch on longer than necessary, and the steady rhythm of clearing rooms can start to feel formulaic after extended play sessions. Visually, Hammerwatch adopts a charming pixel-art style that pays homage to retro gaming while remaining clean and readable. The environments are detailed without being cluttered, allowing players to focus on the action while still appreciating the atmosphere. The lighting effects and subtle animations bring life to the stone corridors, while the color palette shifts as the player descends deeper into the castle. The soundtrack, composed by Two Feathers, complements the tone perfectly, with haunting melodies and energetic battle themes that enhance the medieval fantasy mood. The presentation, though minimalist, succeeds in evoking nostalgia without relying solely on it—it’s a love letter to an older era that understands what made those games engaging. Hammerwatch is not without its shortcomings. The repetition inherent in its design can wear thin for players looking for more variety or narrative depth. The combat, while satisfying, can at times feel predictable due to limited enemy behavior patterns. Class balance also varies, with certain heroes feeling more capable than others depending on the situation. The lack of procedural generation means that once you’ve mastered the layout of the dungeons, replaying them offers diminishing surprises. Yet these flaws are somewhat softened by the game’s focus on skill mastery and cooperative replayability. It’s a game designed to test reflexes and teamwork rather than to overwhelm with content or story. Despite its limitations, Hammerwatch remains a solid and enduring example of how simplicity can be powerful when executed with care. It captures the raw thrill of dungeon crawling—fighting through waves of monsters, collecting gold, upgrading your hero, and inching closer to victory. It respects the player’s time by keeping the mechanics tight and the goals clear, and it delivers a rewarding sense of accomplishment through pure gameplay rather than artificial progression systems. Whether you play it alone as a test of endurance or with friends as a cooperative adventure, Hammerwatch offers a challenging and nostalgic journey that feels timeless. For players who appreciate classic action, deliberate design, and the joy of shared discovery, it stands as one of the most faithful and enjoyable homages to the dungeon-crawling genre in recent memory. Basically Gauntlet. The default controls are retarded, but with a bit of fannying about you can set up a good twinstick controller config, & there are lots of handy controller options allowing you to set up buttons for strafing, autofire, press to prevent movement etc. Gives you a reason not to hold down the fire button by having attacks slow movement speed. Pixel art is nice enough, music is mid. Steam workshop support is very basic, just custom campaigns to play through, but it's still nice to have, & should add a few more hours of fun to the game after you beat the vanilla campaign. No signs of woke BS or politics, just fun arcadey goodness. The lack of Steam Cloud support is annoying (you will lose your save files if you uninstall the game).

The Boys and I just purchased this game for $2 because we were all supposed to get together last night but one was feeling a little sick plus the weather was bad. So we compromised on buying this game and playing together online. It's very simple and we only played for 1.8 hours at this point, but we had a lot of fun dinking around with different characters, exploring the levels, and just noodling and having fun. It comes off as a basic build in today's world (though fairly complicated for a 2013 game), but it's actually pretty complex. We got all the way to the first main boss where we got DOMINATED. We look forward to our next play session and seeing where this goes. IF we continue to enjoy the game, we might end up playing our way down the full lineup of games. Final judgment: For $2, check this out. Make sure you have friends to play with as I feel this is very difficult solo. You will easily get your money's worth and then some.
