I wasn't expecting to enjoy this game as much as I did. I thought I'd be running a store. Keeping shelves stocked. Counting money. Smiling at customers. Normal things. Then the sun went down. And suddenly every person walking toward my door looked like a threat assessment. That's when HELLMART becomes incredible. The game gives you this tiny patch of light surrounded by endless darkness and tells you to keep everything running. Keep the business alive. Keep yourself alive. Simple. Except the people outside keep getting stranger. The sounds get stranger. The nights get stranger. And after enough hours, you start catching yourself staring at the security cameras even when nothing is happening. Waiting. Watching. Hoping something moves. I love that. The store starts feeling less like a workplace and more like a bunker. The automatic doors stop feeling welcoming. Every knock sounds wrong. Every customer feels like they're hiding something. And honestly? They probably are. By the middle of the game, I stopped seeing customers. I started seeing variables. Potential risks. Moving statistics. One person wants help. One person wants supplies. One person is smiling a little too much. Interesting. The game slowly transforms paranoia into a survival skill. Normal people would call that unhealthy. Normal people don't survive horror games. The best moments happen when you're alone in the store. Lights buzzing overhead. Cameras cycling through empty parking lots. Absolute silence. Then you notice something. A figure. A movement. A shape standing where it wasn't standing before. And instead of fear... You feel excitement. Finally. Something is happening. Disturbing. Obsessive. Beautifully uncomfortable. A game that turns customer service into psychological warfare and somehow makes me look forward to the night shift.
What stands out the most? This game is really FUN! The game is broken up into before work and after, the various chores you have to do, including fighting monsters in the night, spying for anomalies, and chatting with strange customers. It makes you feel like you're the hero in one of those strange creepypastas about taking a job, in a rural, secluded place, and all this weird stuff starts happening. There were no bugs I ran into, and I completed the story mode in about 6 hours. I didn't get to unlock half of the features, so I'm excited to try endless mode next! Try this out, it's gem!
After 11.4 hours I played through all 3 endings and got 100% of all currently available achievements. As it is currently, the game doesn't offer much in the way of replay value as there is no endless mode after obtaining all three different endings, at least not that I can see. I will say out of all 3 play throughs I did notice subtle changes. Random different jump scares I didn't see on the other play throughs, different interactions with NPCs, whether this is specific to each game based on which ending you are setting up to get or if it truly is random I can't say for certain. Some of the current features are locked and unable to be accessed as of the time of writing this review. It is currently possible to grind money in the early days by intentionally ignoring objectives like answering the phone. Whether or not it's possible to unlock all available upgrades this way I don't know as I didn't test it. The game can be a bit repetitive with stocking and cleaning, but it's a supermarket sim, that's to be expected. The messes do tend to pop up quite frequently, but the customers don't seem to mind if you walk away to clean them up. There are currently 3 save files one for each playthrough and subsequent ending, there does not appear to be anyway to reload past days, so once you progress to a checkpoint you're locked into that choice unless you start over completely. Checkpoints are very forgiving as dying at night allows you to simply restart at the beginning of the night. Honestly for 15 dollars it's fine, some of the reviews are saying it's not worth it at the current price, but I got nearly 12 hours of play time out of it. I'd pay that much to see a 2-3hr movie and be equally as entertained. My only real gripe is the load times. On initial start up and on checkpoint reload there is a bit of a delay, initial start up can take a couple of minutes, and I did experience a few crashes on start up as well, check point reloads are faster but it's still a bit of a delay. At the moment I've done all I can in the game so it's going on the shelf, but I'd be curious to see what future updates have in store.
