July 2025
Hero of the Kingdom II continues the series’ casual adventure style while improving on a few aspects of the original. This time, the story has a new twist: the kingdom is under threat from ruthless pirates, and your character’s sister gets kidnapped during a raid. You set off on a journey to rescue her, which eventually has you sailing to far-off islands and confronting the pirate menace. I immediately noticed that the world and story felt a bit bigger in scope than the first game. The second installment offers slightly improved art and there are a few new gameplay elements. You’ll still be clicking around to complete quests, gather resources, and help villagers, but now there are new locations (like tropical islands) and a broader variety of quests. The core gameplay remains point-and-click adventuring with hidden items to find and simple resource management, so if you liked the relaxing play style of the first game, this one delivers more of the same, just on a larger map. The story and world-building in Hero of the Kingdom II felt more engaging to me, it introduces lively port towns, castaway islands, and a classic pirate villain, which is a nice change from the generic evil wizard of game one. The writing also improved a bit; it’s still simple, but the characters and dialogue had a little more personality this time. While the overall pacing of Hero of the Kingdom II is still good and casual, I did hit a slow patch in the middle of the game. In order to pursue the pirates, you have to build your own ship, which required gathering a lot of materials and gold. This part of the game felt deliberately slow, I spent a while doing odd jobs and bartering to get the wood, sails, and other supplies for the boat. It wasn’t too bad (and it made the eventual sea voyage feel earned), but it did test my patience a little. Apart from that segment, the game kept me busy but never overwhelmed, and I was always moving on to a new area or task at a reasonable pace. The developers added a few subtle new features, like more skills to learn (fishing, hunting, gathering herbs, etc.) and slightly more detailed graphics and character portraits. These tweaks made the world feel richer than in the first game. I also noticed the game is a bit longer than its predecessor. There is definitely more content here than in the first installment. The difficulty remains fairly low, it’s hard to actually fail since you can always come back later after gathering more resources. That makes it a relaxing experience, though if you prefer more challenge, you might find it too easy. For completionists, Hero of the Kingdom II offers 48 Steam achievements, and getting them all is a bit trickier than in the first game. There are a few secret quests and hidden items that are easy to miss. In my playthrough, I ended up missing one achievement related to finding a legendary Golden Armor, which turned into quite a scavenger hunt. This particular side quest requires solving some very obscure clues and pixel-hunting in remote parts of the map. I’ll admit I needed to consult an online hint to figure it out, since it was the “last award I needed to complete the game”. I wasn’t alone in that, other players have noted that they used guides to unlock the final few achievements after finishing the main story. If you’re an achievement hunter, be prepared to comb through every area or get a guide for those ultra-hidden secrets. On the bright side, the game’s Steam community has plenty of helpful guides and discussions, so you won’t be truly stuck. In the end, I felt Hero of the Kingdom II was a definite improvement over the first game. It’s very much more of the same, bigger, better and just as enjoyable. The sequel kept the cozy, addictive gameplay loop of the original while adding a bigger world and a slightly richer story. It’s still a humble little game at heart, not epic by any means, but for a few dollars, it’s absolutely worth it. I bought it on sale for just a couple of bucks, and I felt I got my money’s worth with a fun 6-hour adventure (for the price, it’s a steal). If you liked Hero of the Kingdom I , I highly recommend Hero of the Kingdom II for a casual, feel-good journey on the high seas. 8/10
