Dec. 2025
I've spent quite a bit of time surviving on the zombie-infested islands of How to Survive, and I have to say, this game is way more fun than I expected. At first glance, it might seem like just another top-down zombie survival game, but it manages to mix action, crafting, survival mechanics, and co-op in a way that's surprisingly engaging. The story is simple: you're stranded on a series of tropical islands after a shipwreck, and your main goal is to survive while uncovering the mysteries of the archipelago. Honestly, the plot isn't groundbreaking - it's mostly a framework of justify exploration and combat - but it works well enough. The islands feel varied, from dense forests and rocky shores to small villages and hidden caves. Each area has different zombie types, environmental hazards, and supplies, which keeps exploration from feeling repetitive. Why I keep coming back Despite its flaws, this game has a charm that keeps me coming back. The mix of crafting, combat, and exploration is addictive. I loved experimenting with combinations of traps and weapons, seeing which ones were overpowered, and finding ways to make zombie hordes more manageable (or just more chaotic). Even though the story isn't memorable, the atmosphere and tension keep the islands exciting. You never quite know what zombie variant you'll encounter next, and the feeling of finally surviving a particularly difficult island with limited supplies is incredibly satisfying. Playing with a friend amplifies the fun even more. We'd coordinate traps, share supplies, and try crazy stunts just for laughs. The game manages to make zombie survival both tense and silly at the same time, which is a rare combination. Combat and Gameplay Combat in How to Survive is fast-paced and fun, particularly with ranged weapons. Crafting bows, guns, or throwing explosives feels satisfying, especially when you use the environment strategically. Traps and improvised explosives and another layer of creativity - sometimes it's more fun to set a trap and watch zombies destroy themselves than to fight them head-on. Melee combat is serviceable but can feel clunky at times, especially when facing large groups of zombies. Still, the game encourages creative problem-solving: running straight at zombies is often a bad idea, so using traps, ranged weapons, and the environment is not only more effective, it's more fun. Exploration is engaging as well. Each island has hidden resources, crafting materials, and side objectives. Sometimes I would just wander around to scavenge and see what crazy combos I could make, which added hours of replayability. The game rewards curiosity - you never know what supplies or interesting zombies you'll find around the next corner. Conclusion How to Survive is a solid zombie survival adventure that balances action, crafting etc. It's not a hardcore survival simulator, but it scratches the survival itch without overwhelming you. The crafting system is incredibly rewarding, combat is fun, and local co-op turns the experience into a chaotic, hilarious, and surprisingly strategic adventure If you enjoy zombie games, crafting and experimenting with creative ways to survive, this is definitely a title worth trying. The campaign may be short, and the story forgettable, but the sheer joy of crafting weapons, setting traps, and outsmarting zombie makes it memorable. Whether you're going solo or with a friend, there's a lot of fun to be had. 9 of 10

This game turned out to be much more enjoyable than I thought, especially in co-op. It is really nice how you can work together, share items and everything. The different modes are also cool. Only thing I could wish for is an endless mode with your fully geared up char.

"How to Survive," developed by Eko Software and published by 505 Games, is a top-down action-adventure game that immerses players in a zombie-infested archipelago. Released in 2013 for various platforms, including Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and later for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as the "Storm Warning Edition," the game offers a blend of survival mechanics and crafting elements. The game's narrative begins with the protagonist being shipwrecked on a remote island, forcing them to navigate a hostile environment teeming with zombies and other threats. Players must manage basic survival needs such as hunger, thirst, and fatigue while combating the undead and other hazards. The inclusion of a "Survival Guide" adds a unique touch, providing players with essential tips and recipes to aid in their survival journey. One of the standout features of "How to Survive" is its extensive crafting system. Players can combine over 100 different items to create a wide array of weapons and tools, ranging from basic spears to more advanced firearms and explosives. This crafting mechanic encourages experimentation and strategic planning, as players must decide the most effective tools for various situations. The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, allowing for cooperative play with friends. The "Storm Warning Edition" further enhances the experience by adding new content, including additional challenges and characters. The introduction of a third-person perspective in the "Third Person Standalone" version provides a more immersive experience, allowing players to engage with the environment and enemies from a closer viewpoint. Despite its strengths, "How to Survive" is not without its criticisms. Some players have noted issues with the game's pacing, particularly in the early stages where resource scarcity can lead to frustrating gameplay. Additionally, while the crafting system is robust, the game's combat mechanics have been described as basic, lacking the depth found in other survival titles. In conclusion, "How to Survive" offers a compelling survival experience with its detailed crafting system and engaging gameplay. While it may not reach the heights of some of its genre counterparts, it provides a solid foundation for players seeking a challenging and immersive survival adventure. Its unique blend of mechanics and cooperative play make it a noteworthy title for fans of the genre. Rating: 7/10

it’s an okey pick for short co-op sessions or fans of survival games looking for something else to play. The game gets stale after a few hours and boomerang is too overpowered. The base game is still good enough for a positive review, get it while it's on sale though. I highly recommend Kovac's Way DLC to make the game more challenging

How to Survive was the first game my first love invited me to play together. It was exciting—surviving on an island filled with zombies, scavenging for resources, and crafting weapons side by side. The game itself was fun, but what made it special was playing it with her. Unfortunately, we only made it through a few chapters before she disappeared. Just like that, I was left to finish the first half of the game alone. It was a strange feeling—continuing something that was meant to be a shared experience, now just another solo playthrough. Even now, when I think of How to Survive, I don’t just remember the gameplay—I remember the feeling of waiting, hoping she’d come back to finish what we started. But in the end, I survived… just not the way I expected.
