A lot of other reviewers complain about missed opportunities here in Hyperbolica , and they're not wrong. It certainly could do a lot more with its premise and its gimmick. However, I believe in grading things based on what they are , not what they could be , so let's take CodeParade's word for it: [quote=CodeParade][Hyperbolic space is] a difficult concept to explain, and first-hand experience really is the best way to understand and build an intuition about these interesting geometries. Hyperbolica was created specifically for this purpose, to break the mold and to have a fun experience in an alternative universe different from our own. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS As not a demonstration but an illustration of hyperbolic space and interacting with it, Hyperbolica certainly succeeds. You get stuck in alien geometries and have to do Normal Videogame Things™ not for the plot--which is indeed threadbare--but to simply experience doing those NVTs in said alien geometries. How does non-Euclidean space make tasks that would otherwise be extremely simple--fly the drone through the rings, shoot the stationary target, et cetera --different? I see Hyperbolica as an open letter, an experiment presented to illustrate what could be done and leaving it to other developers to run with the idea. Hence bright colors, simple character avatars, low-poly (to the modern eye) objects, and just enough of a plot to tie it all together so there can be something like a narrative to drive the player. While writing-wise Disco Elysium this ain't, it's good enough for the purpose. In a word, it's nice . Sometimes, that's enough. Is a quiet, nice game that illustrates geometric weirdness worth (as of writing) thirteen bucks to you? That's all it comes down to. If you want some Big Gaming Experience, hold off. If you want the opportunity to expand your weird spatial experience--sorry, I can't think of a better way of putting it--then get it. If you're a developer who wants to make a Big Weird Gaming Experience... pick this up and fiddle with it. See what it might inspire you to make... and looking by the other reviews, there's definitely a market for Big Weird Gaming Experiences. Personally, I could see a cosmic horror or sci-fi exploration game using these geometries working really well.

An interesting experience in what mathematically-accurate non-Euclidean game environments would be like. Hyperbolica is a tech demo first and a game second, which is a shame, since what game-y elements there are show a lot of promise if only they'd been developed further. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this little collectathon. I liked the part where it was a dating sim and I got rizzed up by a robot.

Amazingly awesome and unique world design. The way the world opens up to you in the most unexpected ways makes exploring it a real treat. Trying to track down 100% of the secrets and quest lines can be a bit tedious but that’s my only complaint. The maze and the inside out world were some of my favorite parts. Well worth the trip!

Honestly more of a tech demo than a game, but it's expansive enough to be interesting for its relatively short duration. Largely it seems to exist just to ask the question "How many interesting gameplay possibilities would a hyperbolic world open up?" to which the answer seems to be a resounding "not that many, actually". One of the sub-worlds isn't even hyperbolic, but spherical. Never the less, I had a good enough time with it and didn't feel that it overstayed its welcome, but I also didn't bother with the "true ending".

Hyperbolica is an adventure game who puzzles serve as a pretense to encourage the player to explore its uniquely non-Euclidean game world. The puzzles are generally quite basic, with the difficulty coming from navigating a world where 3D space works very differently than what we're usually used to. One never gets quite used to it, but the effect is extremely interesting all the same, and at two hours in length, it doesn't overstay its welcome.
