Pretty alright exploration game, with some fun NPC's and some decent puzzles/minigames. The main focus is how the world is very non-euclidean, and how you'll manage to do your tasks while the world wraps and bends around you in some crazy ways. However, I didn't find it too memorable when compared with other games that tried the same. And it feels a little nauseating sometimes (specially if you try the VR mode). But overall, I'd still say Hyperbolica is a nice short experience. It's not a mind-blowing game, but it did make my mind go in circles, in a good way.
Finally, I can actually experience non-Euclidean space instead of just looking at the formulas. I learned about non-Euclidean and differential geometry in Leonard Susskind's General Relativity course. Despite Susskind's attempts to make it as grounded as possible, all I could learn about these strange geometries were the mathematical formulas. Until I played this game, I couldn't really see or experience non-Euclidean geometry.
Trying not to be hyperbolic Hyperbolica is more of a technical demonstration than a game. Or maybe I should say it functions better as a technical demonstration than a game. Hyperbolica is a non-euclidian game, which means that the world doesn't follow the usual dimensionality that we have in the real world. While it's not possible to truly experience non-euclidean spaces in reality, the mathmatics of dealing with them have been around for a long time. So, the developer behind this game decided to build a whole new render engine on top of an existing game engine to allow for the creation of this game. As far as experiencing this type of geometry goes, it's an amazing technical achievement, and something that I think most people should give a try. As for the game itself, it's a bit short, boring, and might give you a headache. The headache is due to the rendering techniques. Exploring a space where it seems that everything is constantly shifting around you rather than you moving apparently doesn't jive well with your brain (or at least it didn't with mine) and after just a few minutes my head would start to hurt. Luckily, your brain is incredibly adaptable and you'll likely overcome this with a few sessions of short stints in the game. The game itself is mostly a collection of areas with unique art directions that have some sort of mini-game you need to overcome in order to progress the story. The mini-games don't generally have anything to do with the geometric nature of the game, but when they do, they end up being more tedious than fun. That is to say, this isn't a particularly enjoyable game. However, even with all those grievances, Hyperbolica is something that TRULY cannot be found anywhere else, and for it's low price, I'd say that it's worth for just about any one to try out.
The game itself is okay. I would not have enjoyed it just for the game, because it's not very entertaining. The non-Euclidean space is the main point of this project, and it's interesting to experience. I play many different styles of games just fine, but I am only able to play this one ~10 minutes at a time, before my head starts to hurt, and I experience some nausea. You can probably train your brain to accept this geometry, but this may take some commitment. My visual / sensory system is actively rejecting the idea that corners may be anything other than exactly 90 degrees. If you are sensitive to weird motion sickness, I do not recommend playing this. This almost feels like playing a game with a very wide field of view. If you do want to challenge yourself, try to construct some kind of a mental model of the world's map in your mind. Even though you may be great with directions in the real world, this reality is just too different to easily fit into whatever humans use internally to be good with physical orientation.
