Into the Flames is one of those games that's easy to sit down with and lose a couple of hours in without realizing it. At its core, it's a semi-realistic firefighter simulator where you respond to emergencies, put out fires, rescue civilians, and try to keep situations from getting worse. It doesn't try to overwhelm you with overly complex mechanics, which makes it approachable whether you're playing solo or jumping in with friends. There's something satisfying about rolling up to a scene, grabbing your gear, and getting to work while everything around you is falling apart. What I enjoyed most was getting to play the hero. Firefighters don't get nearly as much attention in gaming as police or military settings, so it was refreshing to play something focused on a different kind of emergency response. The game isn't perfect—some missions can start to feel familiar after a while, and it isn't the deepest simulator out there—but I don't think it's trying to be. As a retired firefighter/paramedic, I wanted to sort of dive back into the job in a much more "safe" fashion, so I picked this up. It's strange, has tons of jankiness and things that don't make sense, but it was fun to revisit some of the tools, trucks, and systems I used for so many decades. If you want a clean, "perfect" gaming experience, this ain't it. But, if you want to just see a taste of some of what firefighting is about, it's fun. Not exactly perfect nor technically accurate (like in the tutorials how you can't use cribbing to stabilize a vehicle before working to extricate victims...I couldn't figure out how to do that), but it's a fun little romp into a good career.
