I bought this at the end of the last decade and just finished it yesterday. It was better than I expected it to be and somehow better than what I'm used to with FPS games. To say what Penguins Arena is exactly it's an FPS game with SSB features. Anywhere from 2-4 teams or penguins all waddle to and fro hurling their snowballs at each other or give a smack. There's also a handful of items/weapons you can acquire, including bear claws to get more traction, a shield to reduce knockback (Sometimes), a bag of fish to smack penguins, a fish bomb that knocks back friend, foe and yourself alike and a mine that sends penguins flying faster than a golf ball. To get through the bad first is that there are a handful of official maps that aren't the best. The one that's just a wide expanse with one hill is quite notorious for having long matches. Also the AI for the penguins is a tad bonkers. But that is what really makes the game as fun as it can be in my opinion. They will not hesitate to give you hell in a handbasket for a challenge and when you're the last one left they'll hunt you down until someone dies. As for my gripe they do tend to be a pain to actually knockout sometimes and even refuse to let you win. Of course, all that said I prefer this to actual FPS games like CS or even TF2 which I have a love/hate relationship with. My reasoning being that this game has a better gameplay loop than those. When you die in any other FPS game it's a stab at your soul, every loss a tarnish to your pride. Losing is a part of the gameplay experience, makes you learn and sometimes losing can be more fun than winning. But my problem is me. When I used to play against people/bots I always thought they were on par with me and didn't want to stomp me out. But that is not what FPS games are now, when you get in a match you are always up against a handful of people who are better than you are at playing while always being at a disadvantage (Bad teams, people leaving, not getting a chance to shoot etc.). That problem isn't in this game. It's gameplay loop is short enough not to leave you out of the fight, you can pick and choose your fights and even on the hardest difficulty you won't be left in the dust because someone is better than you. It can be a bit samey by the time you've played however many matches but luckily there are achievements and they only took me a little over 7 hours and the custom map 'Only one king' to get them all. 8/10 Great game, maybe you might also get to play the multiplayer. I didn't but it's there nyano desu.
I was a big player in the PA community back in the day. For those who didn't know, this game actually had a shockingly big competitive scene, with pretty big prize pools too. I recall one was like $10k for the winner.. Well there were a bunch of grooming allegations, and apparently like 80% of the top players were in on it. I was not one of them, but yeah that completely killed this game in a matter of weeks, after years of going strong. I watched as basically everyone I knew got torn apart (justifiably so), and it honestly left me with trust issues that I still have to this day. I miss just playing this game in ignorant bliss, I know my one love is gone and isn't ever coming back.
I remember playing Penguins Arena: Sedna's World back when it was available through WildTangent's free trials, so coming back to it is incredibly nostalgic. It has a simple but fun concept, and it's even better when you have other people to play with. Unfortunately, the online multiplayer is usually empty these days, which makes it harder to experience the game the way it was meant to be played. I'd give it a 9/10. A lot of that score comes from the nostalgia it brings back, but it's also genuinely a fun little game. If the online community were still active, it would easily be even better.
