If you are a busy professional juggling time between work, family, and social life, and yet still trying to make time for games to preserve your identity as a gamer. If you need games to be interesting enough that should you choose to sit for a 2 hour session, you can, but still be reassured in knowing that it is short enough, in case you need to walk away after just 20 minutes. If you need games that are simple enough to pick up quickly, and easy enough on your attention and focus that you can still watch a movie or listen to a podcast on the side while playing, and dynamic enough to keep the loop interesting, and yet still pleasing to your millennial sensibilities that require something nice to look at. I have been looking for something like that for a while. This is the closest I have gotten.

Played on Steam Deck OLED (Updated 1/24 post hotfix) Moving from demo to early access has been a pleasant experience. The game is fun, albeit grindy as one would expect from a roguelite. PROS: Great characters to play, fun level design, great weapon and movement mechanics (albeit quite unbalanced in the current state), decent mob diversity, challenges that spawn are fun and give you options so that every run is not the same, talent trees and perks grow strength/survivability while adding additional challenges. CONS: The music repetitive, Skill balance leaves you cherry-picking the ones that work well which really sticks the RNG in your face leading to reroll hunting from chests. Note: Skill evolutions are not automatic. You will need to put in work to flesh out your skill trees to unlock them. I suggest focusing on the God powers that apply to any character you play before focusing on the character itself. This makes for a much longer grind, but a more enjoyable experience. That said, spent points can be reallocated between runs, so if something doesn't work for you or your play style, just change it. I have removed my comments about the Ice storm event as the issue has been hot-fixed. The speed in which the devs acted to make our experience better on the Steam Deck is exactly what I love to see from a paid early access game. Here are my updated in-game settings for Deck: Vsync: Off FPS Limit: 45 Quality: Medium Textures: Medium Shadows: Low Bloom: On Ambient Occ: Medium AA: SMAA Medium Upscaling: Off Gore: On Interface Option: Damage Numbers OFF This gives me a solid 45fps 99% of the time. Since the 1/24 hotfix, Ice Storm events are no longer an issue.

Do you ever find yourself wishing Vampire Survivors had better graphics than the 1980s? Or that Diablo IV wasn't a MMO? Or that Path of Exile 2 didn't feel so much like getting waterboarded? This is the game for you. It's got all the pewpews, shiny things, and poorly-described skills that you really need in a game like this. For the cost of 2 beers, it provides hours of gool ol' fashioned thumbstick-twirling, can't-see-anything, pixel-soup-of-doom bullet-Hel fun. Some unique/rare features: * The combination of "god skills" (many of which are cross-class permanent passives) and "class skills" (only applicable when playing that class) makes for some good variety, especially with the free respecs * You can (optionally) choose to control your aim direction and/or your basic attack, which is rare in this type of game. It gives you slightly more control, if you want it. * The simple objectives make running around the map more fun, while still giving you a reason to kill all the things ------ Is it the deepest roguelite out there? No. Should you play it anyway? Absolutely.

Early Access Release Impression: Jotunnslayer is a good looking Vampire Survivors clone with a balanced progression curve that sticks to the basics of the genre and -for better or worse - does not surprise with any unique or unexpected mechanics. Free-reskilling is a positive aspect that allows you to explore all classes, without being trapped in bad builds. At the current stage I would recommend playing Soulstone Survivors or Nordic Ashes for similar titles with more content; Halls of Torment and Death Must Die for those who want a more Diablo-esque experience, or Crafty Survivors for more unique character design. That being said, Jotunnslayer is a solid game and already offers a fair amount of gameplay, unlockable characters and weapons for its money - so you can't really go wrong with 8,99€ and might even be positively surprised as Early Access progresses. Note that the devs announced price increases as more content will be added, so there is much to win and not much to lose to get it early. If you're unsure whether you should jump in, there's also always the free demo.
