This game problem is being unnecessarily grindy and unrewarding. it has no way to speed up the rounds nor the enemy speed or increase the density. you got 45 minute session? too bad you have to wait it out even if you're stronger than your enemies, just gotta wait min by min until the timer runs out.
After having 200+ hours into the game with everything unlocked, I figured I would return the favor with a review. This game could be a, "relaxing make your build and stand still," watching everyone else crumble to dust type of build or a, "high exhilarating, run to survive, glass cannon," type of build. I've spent so much time trying to min/max this or that to dial into the game, which I couldn't be happier for. It is constantly keeping my mind busy. I have woken up at 2am before with a new build combination I wanted to try.. so I did at that time..... The latest update allows to build a character planner, which I have been consumed by recently. It works so well!!! The dev has been incredible at working on this game continuously and frequently. There were multiple updates a few months ago, even right before Christmas as a special Christmas gift for us. And then now. For $9.99, the price is well worth it. And yet, I feel it has been priced fairly, in my opinion. You cannot beat the price for a game that will consume many hours, a lot to unlock and master, keep one entertained and coming back for more! Much Love!!
The main thing that Conquest Dark does differently than the rest of the genre is how it limits upgrade choices based on your character's proficiencies and equipment. This results in an elegant way to avoid the pitfall that many other survivors-like games fall into, where unlocking new equipment makes things feel worse because of how they'll dilute your future runs' upgrade pool. The total variety of upgrades isn't massive, but each class feels distinct, and each primary weapon's limitations in their skill choices means that the game has felt like choices matter more than most other games in the genre. Builds are easier to plan (and execute) due to the proficiency limitations, which means a high level of consistency- the only times where I've felt like a build didn't come together is because I hadn't yet unlocked a skill that I was looking for. The game runs well on Steam Deck. I haven't run into any performance issues. For negatives, the run time for higher difficulties gets really lengthy if you push high, and it's not super clear to me if that's providing rewards that are actually valuable. The overworld map is serviceable but not great on controllers. Some of the terms used for skills and upgrades aren't clear. Late game visibility can be difficult to read as well, but I've yet to play a game like this that solves that problem.
Honestly, the best “survivor-like” game I've ever played. I don't like spending long minutes traveling across the map to collect important items or being forced to make compromises. None of that here. The pace is good, there's no (or very little) feeling of a slow and boring start to the run like in other games, or of wanting enemies to appear faster. The only negative is perhaps the “final” boss, which not only breaks (in a bad way) the habit that the game has established up to that point, but also forces the player to use certain specialized builds to defeat it. It's very difficult when you don't have the right strategy/items, but offers no resistance when you do... I didn't play any further simply because I had seen everything the game had to offer at that stage. I hope there will be more content in the future.
