If someone would tell me 25 years ago when I was excited by Jagged Alliance 2 that in 2025 I will replay Jagged alliance 1 again I dont think I would believe it. Even less that it will be total blast.. It is true that Jagged alliance has excellent sequel (and 3 is not bad either after all..) but I was still amazed how well the original was really done, sure it is old, sure it has some technical flaws, sure it require read the manual (btw it is in game files, I can also highly suggested this official strategy guide https://www.moddb.com/downloads/ja1 but it stay excellent, all formulas works flawlessly, your team of mercenaries raise from greens to Rambo superiors.. atmosphere is super captivating and force you capture just 1 more sector and go sleep... Game keep you on toes with events that constantly threat your finance and operation and the fight stay challenging till very end - in opposite to trivial and disappointing ending of UFO/XCOM, Jagged alliance nailed it and at end are elite enemies that almost never miss and are same or even better equiped and trained than player team.. And when you finally get to main antagonist Lucas Santino he blow up whole base.. escaping it with covering shots against pursuing enemies stay most memorable strategy experience. It was absolute joy kick Santino ass again and I can only suggest it. Contrary to Steam usual habits, JA1 also come with Dosbox and automatic configuration so it is playable on any system without need to play with mods or configs.

A little outdated now, but this game is still an addictive piece of turn-based strategy history - one of the first. It's a 90's game so you'll need to read the manual to figure out how to play, yet despite its age and associated quirks it's very much a "just one more turn" type of game. If you're not afraid of older DOS-era games that require a little light instruction reading, or you're just a big fan of the genre, this is worth a look.

For those who love board games that like a little animation. Played this as a kid, and decades later, still pulls you in and delivers an enjoyable time where strategy and planning matter. And Hard choices make the difference between a successful campaign and a 30 day failure. If you like Baldurs gate. You'll probably enjoy this as well. Maybe more so.
