Just Xiangqi is a focused and respectful digital interpretation of Chinese chess that places clarity, authenticity, and accessibility at the center of its design. Developed and published by Studio Amateur, the game does not attempt to reinvent Xiangqi or gamify it with unnecessary embellishments. Instead, it aims to present the traditional experience in a clean, modern format that works equally well for newcomers discovering the game for the first time and experienced players seeking a reliable, elegant platform for serious play. At its core, the game faithfully reproduces the rules, structure, and strategic identity of Xiangqi. The familiar battlefield layout, complete with the river dividing the board and the palace restrictions for generals and guards, is presented clearly and without compromise. Each piece behaves exactly as expected, preserving the unique tactical rhythms that distinguish Xiangqi from Western chess. Cannons remain a constant source of early pressure, horses demand careful positioning to avoid blocked movement, and generals are constrained in ways that force precise defensive planning. The digital format enhances readability, making complex board states easier to parse than on a physical board, especially for players still internalizing the game’s patterns. One of the strongest aspects of Just Xiangqi is its approach to teaching. Rather than assuming prior knowledge, the game includes comprehensive tutorials that explain not only how each piece moves, but also why those rules matter strategically. This instructional structure allows new players to build understanding gradually, reducing the intimidation factor that often surrounds traditional strategy games. The pacing of these lessons is deliberate, encouraging experimentation and learning through play rather than rote memorization. For a game rooted in centuries of competitive tradition, this emphasis on onboarding is both thoughtful and effective. Single-player modes are designed to support steady improvement. Adjustable AI difficulty lets players find a comfortable challenge level, whether they are practicing fundamentals or testing advanced strategies. Career and tournament-style modes provide structure and long-term goals, helping players measure progress over time rather than treating each match as an isolated experience. The AI generally plays competently, emphasizing sound positional play and tactical awareness, though seasoned Xiangqi veterans may eventually outgrow its highest difficulty settings. Visually, the game adopts a restrained and polished aesthetic. Boards and pieces are rendered with clarity and subtle detail, avoiding visual clutter while still conveying a sense of weight and tradition. Animations are smooth and unobtrusive, reinforcing the feeling of a refined tabletop experience rather than a flashy video game. The clean presentation serves a practical purpose as well, allowing players to focus entirely on strategy without distraction. Audio design is minimal, reinforcing a calm, contemplative atmosphere that suits the nature of turn-based, abstract competition. Multiplayer options add depth and longevity, allowing players to face human opponents locally or online. Competitive play highlights the game’s strengths, as Xiangqi’s sharp tactics and rapid tempo shine most when both sides are actively probing for weaknesses. Online activity can vary depending on region and time, but the inclusion of leaderboards, achievements, and ranked-style progression encourages repeated engagement. For players who treat Xiangqi as a serious competitive pursuit, these features provide motivation and a sense of community. Additional challenge modes, such as predefined mid-game or endgame scenarios, help deepen strategic understanding. These focused puzzles encourage players to think critically about specific board states, material imbalances, and tactical motifs. They function as training tools rather than mere diversions, reinforcing the game’s identity as both a learning platform and a competitive arena. This emphasis on mastery aligns well with the traditional culture of Xiangqi, where study and repetition are central to improvement. Community reception reflects the game’s niche but dedicated appeal. Players frequently praise its faithful rule implementation, clean interface, and strong tutorial support, while criticism tends to focus on areas outside the core experience, such as matchmaking population or desires for additional customization. Importantly, few complaints target the fundamentals of gameplay, which suggests that Studio Amateur succeeded in delivering what Xiangqi players value most: accuracy, clarity, and respect for the source material. Ultimately, Just Xiangqi is a confident and disciplined digital adaptation that understands its purpose. It is not trying to compete with flashy strategy games or broaden its appeal through gimmicks. Instead, it offers a refined space for learning, practicing, and enjoying one of the world’s most enduring strategy games. For anyone interested in Chinese chess—whether as a cultural curiosity or a serious competitive pursuit—it stands as a thoughtful, well-crafted, and rewarding experience. Rating: 8/10

Another game I am painfully braindead at but an absolute joy. Best place on steam to learn play and have a career in xiangqi. Nice visuals and graphics and no noticeable bugs.

This is awesome, but I stuck in a situation where both sides don't have enough offensive pieces to attack but no one offers a draw or surrender, with time increment, it simply go on without result. Is that supposed to be how it work? I like the game design and simplicity. AIs are strong, perfect for practice. I'd love to pay for Just Shogi, Just Chess, and other types of games like ancient version of Chess and so on, if those are in the work.
