Kao the Kangaroo is a mixed bag. It's very close to being a great game but the bugs, jankiness, and general lack of polish in several areas brings the experience down. Regardless I think there's enough to enjoy here that I do recommend it overall. In a lot of ways, this is the best game in the Kao series. It's got the best hub worlds by a long-shot, there's more things to do within them and more reason to explore than ever with costumes and health upgrades to buy. I think the game is GORGEOUS, it's on par with Spyro Reignited if not even better looking, the game has some really nice looking levels and speaking of levels - this game has some bangers. I think they are well designed and have fun gimmicks involving your boxing gloves, Elemental effects can be applied to them and used for puzzles and platforming which is neat. I think this game controls really good and the combat here is genuinely some of the best combat I've seen in a 3D platformer, it's nothing complex or crazy but it's perfect for this kind of game. It's a satisfying pacebreaker for the platforming that doesn't go on too long, it's really fun to punch dudes in this game and build up to a big take-down to wipe out a bunch of guys at once. All of this sounds great right? and it is. It's a really solid platformer but the thing is this game is JANK as hell. It's a lot of little things, boxes disappearing instead of breaking when you hit them, hitboxes of certain enemy types are weirdly small, the way Kao picks up items looks really awkward because he tries to face the camera but doesn't track to face it so he just looks off in a random direction. The audio mixing here is really bad too, sometimes music just turns off and the level is silent for the rest of the level or some things within the game seem like they'd make a sound but just don't. This entire game screams that it was rushed out because there's just a general lack of polish in a lot of different places. One of the worst things I ran into was that the grapple points were just not working, Kao would just fling off in a random direction and I couldn't figure out why. I messed with the settings and it turns out if you have FPS higher than 60 they literally don't work. If the physics don't work beyond 60fps, there shouldn't even be an option for any FPS higher than that. There was another time I got sort-of softlocked where a flame powerup for my gloves didn't spawn where it was supposed to and I had to die and re-load to get it to spawn again. It wasn't horrible, but annoying. As for actual negatives with the game itself, I think the voice acting is pretty bad. I understand they wanted to get Polish voice actors because Kao as a franchise originates there but man these actors just do not do a good job. I also am not a huge fan of Kao's new design, it's not the worst redesign I've ever seen for a platformer character but the old one was much better, and it is here as a costume which you can get pretty early on which is cool. It doesn't stay for cutscenes though which is a shame. If I could, I'd give this game a "mixed" review because it really is a good game hidden beneath jank and bugs that easily could have been patched out but never were. I did have fun playing it but it's got issues, maybe you won't mind the problems as much as me though.

Kao the Kangaroo 2022 its great that the game series have a comeback, sadly it didnt do anything really special but its any ok 3d platformer: Pros: + 4 small open worlds to find a few thing here and there and go to the maps (just like spyro for example) + 4 maps each world + good graphics (simular to Crash 4 and Spyro) + story maybe isnt anything spetecualar but its actually the best Kao story so far and have great potential in the future + collectiables to find + simple but best combat kao game so far + fun enemies to fight against Cons: - its such a shame that they dont do anything more variety in the gameplay like for example what Kao 2 did it stick a little bit more out (no races or no Gaget to help thought the maps, for an sequel its great potential to have more playable characters for example like Kaia simular what Sypro 3 did would help the sequel if ever comes out to have more variety and stick a little bit more out to the other platformers - somethimes the gameplay mechanics are a little bit unpolished like climbing dont want to work well - the challenges (Eternal Well) are good meant but feels useless and a bit boring and way to shorts, also it looks boring too Game overal is fine but didnt do anything special but if you like 3D platformers like Crash, Spyro or Sonic its worth to check out!

Starting this one off, I immediately noticed how this game only has an option to invert the y-axis. What about the x-axis? If I invert my camera, I invert all of it, not half of it. Whats the point of that? So into Steams Bigpicture to change the controllersettings there. Good start. I hate when games only let you change one axis. Its a normal 3d platformer, nothing special about it. It controls very well! If you like 3d platformers, you're probably going to like this game! However, This game has a lot of little flaws... I noticed pretty early on for example that this game loves its invisible walls or even visible terrain, which doesn't really exist. So you just fall through what appears to be ground sometimes if you explore a lot, as some platforms are not meant to be stood on. I had a few cheap deaths in the beginning because it wasn't that clear. The camera likes to get behind walls too, it isn't stuck there, but the walls should either be see through, or the camera shouldn't get behind a wall in the first place. It is not even a rare occurence, you'll see it happening constantly. You can also get permanently stuck on chests and walls or stairs, rolling into things seems to sometimes do that. Very frustrating, happened to me 3 times in my full playthrough. Though, I did start playing more careful after the third time... Sometimes for destructibles, there aren't correct breaking animations being played. The pots just keep standing there and despawn after a second or two... The hook ability is the worst. It doesn't work at all. You can not hit any directional input whatsoever, otherwise it'll send you flying into any direction seemingly at random. Worst thing is, sometimes you absolutely need to use directional input to get higher, otherwise you'll just fall down! Only half the time it worked like it should and I jumped forward, sometimes it flung me to the sides, sometimes even backwards. It feels very bad to use. If you're trying to find all collectibles, they did a pretty good job at showing whats available and if you replay a level, you can leave the level in an instant, when you collected the missing item through the menu. It saves all collection progress. It does not however track the chests and heartpieces scattered throughout the levels. Which really is a bummer. I stopped caring about the chests and only went for all the stuff that I can actually track ingame. Luckily I got all the heartpieces, so they aren't as badly hidden at least. The gameplay itself is very fun, if you are careful and avoid the glitches. So if you aren't too bothered by the little annoyances, you definitely get a fun experience here! It was enough for me, that I got the DLCs aswell, as I wanted more content! The DLCs have a few tougher levels, but they play well. Its a good challenge. I'll review the DLCs seperately!

It's a solid, nostalgic platformer! The difficulty level is easy though the levels can be a little long. As others have said, the voice acting is god-awful and the story isn't anything amazing but if you can ignore those things, the gameplay itself is good and the graphics aren't too shabby either. You can probably finish the story in 7-8 hours but it may take 11-12 to grab all of the collectibles.

It's a fun little game. The story is somewhat silly and you will very soon question yourself how dumb someone can be. Also you may expect a plot twist or two in certain scenarios but that's okay. After all it is a game also meant to be played by kids so I guess it is fine though. Gameplay wise it's actually pretty creative in some levels. Even though I expected the coins to be one-time collectables like in other Kao games. But that is fine with me. Also it was sometimes a bit too easy to get out of bounds in this game and you find yourself stuck behind a hitbox or the lack of such. Or you managed to get somewhere you'll not be able to get back from except respawning if possible. I had some occasion where I had to reload the game to het back on track. Which kinda is annoying in a game which expects you to explore the levels for secrets. Played the game on Deck and it ran very well. I suppose it deserves the Steam Deck verified badge.
