Dec. 2025
KarmaZoo is a bright, communal platforming experience that places cooperation and generosity at the very center of its design philosophy. Developed by Pastagames and published by Devolver Digital, the game feels intentionally designed as an antidote to the competitive, skill-gated multiplayer experiences that dominate much of the genre. Instead of asking players to prove individual mastery, KarmaZoo invites up to ten participants to succeed—or fail—together, turning every run into a shared experiment in coordination, patience, and kindness. The core experience revolves around navigating a constantly shifting sequence of platforming challenges known as the Loop. Each run strings together short, bite-sized stages that adjust dynamically based on the number of players and the characters in play. Progress is rarely possible through solo effort; most obstacles require players to activate switches for others, sacrifice their own safety to create paths, or remain close to teammates to maintain the group’s shared protective aura. This design naturally encourages players to pay attention to one another rather than rushing ahead, reinforcing the idea that the group’s success outweighs any single person’s progress. A major source of depth and replayability comes from the game’s expansive roster of playable creatures. With dozens of characters available, each possessing a single, clearly defined ability, every session feels shaped by the collective makeup of the group. Some characters can create platforms, others can break barriers, extend jumps, or manipulate the environment in unusual ways. These simple abilities combine in emergent and often surprising ways, allowing familiar stages to be approached differently depending on who is present. Unlocking new characters through accumulated Karma provides a steady sense of progression without ever tying advancement to individual performance. The Karma system itself is central to how the game reinforces its themes. Rather than rewarding speed, precision, or survival alone, Karma is earned primarily through helping others and completing stages as a cohesive unit. When a player falls behind or dies, they are not removed from the experience; instead, they return as a ghost, still able to contribute and rejoin the group once everyone regathers. This approach minimizes frustration and keeps downtime low, ensuring that even mistakes feel like part of the shared journey rather than a punishment. Visually, KarmaZoo is immediately inviting. Its colorful, pixel-inspired art style is expressive without being cluttered, making it easy to track multiple players on screen even during hectic moments. Character animations are playful and readable, reinforcing the game’s lighthearted tone, while environments strike a balance between visual variety and functional clarity. The soundtrack and sound effects further support this atmosphere, leaning toward upbeat and whimsical rather than intense or dramatic, which helps maintain a welcoming mood even when coordination falters. Beyond the main Loop mode, the game includes an additional party-focused option that offers short, self-contained challenges. While these modes provide a change of pace and work well in casual group settings, they feel more like a complement than a replacement for the core cooperative experience. The heart of KarmaZoo clearly lies in its large-group platforming runs, where spontaneous teamwork and shared problem-solving create moments that feel genuinely social rather than mechanically enforced. That said, the game’s reliance on multiplayer is both its greatest strength and its most notable limitation. The quality of a session can vary depending on the behavior and engagement of other players, and runs may stall if coordination breaks down or if player counts are low. While the design does everything it can to encourage cooperation, it cannot fully compensate for disengaged participants. Additionally, over extended play, some stage patterns and puzzle structures can begin to feel familiar, which may limit long-term variety for players seeking deep mechanical escalation. Ultimately, KarmaZoo succeeds because it commits wholeheartedly to its message. It is a game about togetherness, generosity, and shared success, expressed not through text or narrative, but through mechanics that quietly reward empathy and collaboration. While it may not appeal to players who prefer solitary mastery or competitive dominance, it offers something genuinely refreshing in the multiplayer space. For those willing to embrace its communal spirit, KarmaZoo delivers a joyful, often surprisingly touching experience that proves cooperation can be just as compelling as competition. Rating: 8/10

I primarily play this game on my alt account on my steam deck and honestly it didn't really wow me or my friends. It wasn't bad by any means but I didn't expect local co-op to just be minigames like that. I thought the co-op platformer would translate into the local co-op as well but I was wrong. I mean it's not bad for a party minigame style game, but it just really isn't what I was expecting or what I was hoping for. So if you're looking at it for a local-co-op game just keep that in mind. I'll still give it a thumbs up as the gamemodes themselves weren't bad, the game just wasn't what I was expecting.

super fun game, the only problem i have is the game isnt popular enough! most times when you join a lobby you're the only one there and you have to wait quite a while for just one other person.

I adore this game. There's something about a multiplayer game where you're forced to play with people all over the world, but all work together without any competition. It shows how language is not as big of a barrier in the world, since you can communicate just fine with others without saying a word. It's unfortunate that there's not often many players on the servers but if you can find a group (their discord always has players wanting to play) it's well worth an evening of your time. Surprisingly large amount of content in the game to play through, just unfortunate that you can't really do any of it without other players.
