This game is supposed be relaxing and chill, and don't get me wrong, it is. Only thing is, every time I play it, I can't help but feel a sense of unease and looming dread. Its lovely! Oh, and absolutely amazing soundtrack too!

A quick skim through other reviews will immediately tell you that this is a visual novel with very pretty and cute art + character designs (by Noco of the Atelier series fame) rather than a shop simulator So if that ain't your cup of tea, you can move on This is a game where you make bitter and sweet meals while exploring a bitter-sweet story about dealing with grief of loss or the inevitability of loss (not a spoiler since you can glean that info right from the first line of dialogue) The gameplay is mostly dialogue driven (again, visual novel) interspersed with selecting tea combos (base tea and accompanying herbs) which suit the patrons requests It also features a mini-RNG aspect where you can expand your tea store with one of three random items each night This is important if you want certain achievements by successfully getting every order right, as some patrons will desire teas that aren't in your initial line-up If you're like me and care about getting the order right and/or feel bad when you get them wrong, then I recommend saving in multiple slots and just before getting the RNG item, since it re-rolls when you re-load One thing I will complain about is the game's translation Specifically, Jam's order of wanting clear tea (meaning high clarity of 5) is in fact, the opposite of what she wants (clarity 1) The music ranges of lo-fi to bouncy, bubbly electronic music, all of which were enjoyable to listen to and chill out (although I will say I experienced some major whiplash with the game's ending going into the ending credits theme) Without spoilers, I will say that after finishing the game it ended up with me feeling rather empty and distressed But I am glad having played through it Sometimes games don't exist to make you feel good with a bright and happy, bushy-tailed ending Sometimes it's okay to just... feel If any of the aspects of this game interests you, be it the art, characters, music or just wanting to feel Then please, consider checking this game out

Kemono Teatime isn't as cutesy or as cozy as you might think it is. From the outside it seems to be a fun, chill and a relaxing game. But, the game description doesn't quite meet up to those expectations, nor does it give you a subtle warning even. I was mislead about it having an "adorable story" (quoting from the about section of the game) from how the game looks overall and the characters because it genuinely is a beautifully made game with its pixel art style. I didn't want to read the reviews because of spoilers, so of course I wanted to try playing it to give my own thoughts of it. The game takes place a year after the pandemic happened during Christmas because of a kemonovirus that has made everyone (mostly everyone) turn into human-like animals with ears, which made the human population fall by over 20%. Once you get infected there is no known cure. Our main character Tarte who we play as is the only human around in the commune that we live in— La Bête. Along with her young little sister, Macaron, who has cat ears and recently grew a tail, they both set up their own cafe. With Tarte being the one who gets to brew the tea and choose the dessert of the day, while her little sister gets to simply exist there and be all cute (besides her being the pâtisserie who bakes for us off-screen based on what we request). As you play the game, you will hear that they're only running the cafe for a maximum of 21 days. A limited-time cafe you might ask? Well, there's a lot more to it than you might think. Tarte opened up the cafe for Macaron's sake, fulfilling her dream of being a pâtissière and giving the people of La Bête a comfortable place to relax and wash their worries away. But her little sister who's recently grew a tail means that they can't keep the cafe running on forever. Why? Once you turn into a kemomimi, you grow animal ears and that's only the first stage of it. Second stage is if you start growing a tail, your life span gets shortened. Stress makes you go into the second stage of the kemonovirus as it progresses, which means you only have around a month to live. Macaron recently grew her tail in November and they just opened up their cafe at the beginning of December. As you play the game, you get to meet 7 characters as the days go by. Mallow, Guimauve, Scone, Jam, Quiche, Galette and Blitz. I won't get into their backstories and stuff as I think the main focus should be on the two main characters, Tarte and Macaron. There was something I wasn't looking forward to which was there being no voice overs for the characters text-to speech bubbles, which would've made the game experience a lot more enjoyable. Otherwise I didn't mind reading the text bubbles at all, but I do think you need a little heads up because there will be A LOT of hours of reading in this game. Something that bothered me while playing is at the beginning of the game, you had barely any ingredients. Tarte had apparently spent most of their spendings on decorating inside of their cafe, so the only way to obtain new tea leaves and herbs were through Quiche, who is the only one that offers you this and other gifts. The downside to this was that you can only pick 1 out of the 3 after finishing a day of work in your cafe. This made the game play a bit frustrating whenever a customer came to visit the cafe, since each one of them had their own specific teas where we, as Tarte, had to make. If you didn't make what the customers had requested, your relationship status decreased with them. But that doesn't actually change or affect the game's story at all. The only thing you get from their relationship is obtaining 5 hearts and later on gives you an achievement if you finish the game on the right ending. If I had known this earlier in the game, I would have only picked either tea leaves or herbs and not the other gifts that Quiche would offer you. Buying materials from Scone was one thing that I didn't mind because even if I had chosen desserts that suited the customers taste, I still wasn't sure if I was earning more from doing that. This game felt like sitting through a movie where the endings were already set in stone. At the start of the game, I thought you could prevent other peoples deaths after Mallow died, because I didn't have a specific herb for her tea at the time while she was still alive. I literally thought I had killed her since it felt like a choice-matter kind of game, but the truth is that it doesn't matter at all. It left me feeling a bit disappointed because that could of added so much more potential to the game. After finishing the game on its different endings, it left me feeling nothing. I understand that this game teaches you to cherish the time that you have left with those you love and care about, but this game just forces you to sit through and watch as some of the customers die in front of your eyes and there is literally nothing you could do to stop it. Especially for Tarte who eventually gets left behind by Macaron, leaving Tarte with so much grief and despair in one of the endings. That doesn't quite give me the experience of a fun, enjoyable game, or an "adorable story". This makes me worried for other players that might play this game for the first time, who might be thinking it's just all cute and relaxing because I don't think some might be able to handle it being much more than that. I really do appreciate the cute aesthetics of the game and how each character look entirely different, with their own personalities and stories since that's what makes them unique and special. Each character had their own backstory which were very heavily related to realistic scenarios, where each of their bonds did make it more exciting to keep going to learn more about them. There was a lot of hidden stories that you could read within the glossary, plus a lot of lore if you went through the radio channels, which did make it a bit more enjoyable and make you understand the premise of the game better. Therefore I don't want to leave this game on such a negative note, because I still quite enjoyed it but not as much as I hoped I would.

Without touching on spoiler content, absolutely beautiful game that tugs on the heartstrings and speaks on what it means to live life to its fullest. The sprite work is wonderful, along with music by Snail House. Only "complaints" would be some translation/typesetting errors and having a faster skip mode for achievement playthroughs. Notably also seems to be a one and done experience for the story, unless I am missing out on something. Overall though 100% worth the cost for around the 8 hours of story content if you are a fast reader like me.

Randomly found this game through a friend's steam discovery queue and bought it based on aesthetics alone with no prior knowledge about it or hesitation. Actually such a banger for the frame 1 purchase.
