When Steam asked if I would recommend this game, I selected yes. Because I have enjoyed my time with it. But I would people newly purchasing this game to proceed with caution. The developers abandoned this game less than a year after release. The game feels good to play but unfinished. The gameplay loop came get old fast. It's a great game to get on sale and have a couple of obsessive gameplay sessions with. But what you see is what you get. I really wish the developers had give this game a more time to get it legs but I'm guessing it did do as well as they wanted out the gate. Which is the risk you take when you release a game that is not quite ready for prime time.
Lakeburg Legacies is a dating sim with some idle-esque management. The purpose of the game is to play matchmaker, picking the right people and getting them married. There is also a light genetic/trait system, where you can make sure the children of these marriages can become really good at specific jobs. This is the first core part of the game. The other part is managing your kingdom/city. Most of this is idle-esque gameplay: you wait for resources to be produced by your population, and then invest those resources back into the city by building or upgrading buildings. These unlock new jobs, new resources, and so on. You then put your townsfolk into these job slots. Which townsfolk are best suited for each job is shown through a nice 5-star rating system. Every townsfolk has different skill levels in each area, based on their traits and the mentorship they received as a child. Overall, Lakeburg is a game that let me down a bit on the management side. It becomes pretty stale, as you mostly just pick the person with the most stars for each job, with not much else to do besides waiting for resources. The dating system is good, but it can't really carry the entire game on its own. So I would recommend Lakeburg Legacies if you're more interested in the dating and matchmaking aspect than the town management side. If you're mainly looking for a management game, I think you'll probably find it gets repetitive pretty quickly.
this game is certainly not perfect and rather niche, and i'd definitely wait to buy it on sale. it's not for everyone, and the people who think it's boring are just not the target audience. and that's okay! with that being said, if you like micromanagement, relationship and character intricacies, city builder-like inventory and item mechanics, and STATS!! this is definitely for you. it's fun to get things up and running. finding a "perfect match" is exciting, getting a child's talent up to 100% in their preferred subject is satisfying, the drama that can pop up seemingly randomly as well as be guided and intentional is always funny and makes things less bland. and don't get me started on how great it is to have an inheritance page filled out completely for the first time, because, WOW of course, with any game like this, scenes will become repetitive and may seem unimportant in the long run, but i don't think that's a negative of lakeburg specifically. there can't be infinite scenarios, and the scenarios they do have are fun and well written. the writing in lakeburg is witty and tongue-in-cheek without being over the top, which can be really difficult to do, but they do it! this isn't as impactful for some people, but as someone who is extremely picky with the designs and art styles of media, i absolutely looooove lakeburg. the art style of the characters and buildings/backgrounds is satisfying and very diverse. cute without being too cartoony, bouncy and soft, just detailed enough to make the character editor (*the character editor!!*) worth messing around with, and overall beautiful. it might be one of my favorite art styles in a game ever. again, this is not a game for everyone, but if it's for you, it is FOR YOU. the option to focus more on relationships or city building is a great addition for the people (me) who are using this as a sims-adjacent stat builder. i wish the prestige system rewarded you with more than just illustrations, but they're great illustrations and give you something to work towards which is enough for me. i also wish it was more obvious how to achieve a victory, but that is probably a skill diff on my part. i'm looking forward to grinding for these achievements too!! theyre ridiculous and so specific which is a lot of fun. overall, this game is great for what it is. i think it could benefit from a demo so people know what exactly they're getting into, and it could be fun to have some updates or DLCs with more/different content! i'm having a ton of fun with lakeburg and i hope it reaches other players with hyper-specific game interests.
Such a cozy village sim! I love marriage and generations in my management sims so I found this really enjoyable. It has a beautiful storybook style with detailed animations, I like how the profiles are customizable like a picrew avatar builder. I do wish that I could see some sort of tangible interaction though, like seeing villagers interact instead of just reading a log about it. But I'm sure that would affect how the game performs, or make it harder to manage the village. I haven't done many playthroughs yet but after my first playthrough, I did wish there was more fanfare to the end of my game's timeline, like ending credits or montage. Sadly I heard there's no more dev support so I don't expect any quality of life updates or improvements made. Still, I recommend it- especially when it's on sale for 70% off (which is how much I got it for).
