Lizard Survivors: Battle for Hyperborea is a compact but stylistically bold roguelike shooter that embraces absurdity, high-energy action, and a bizarre mythological backdrop. Developed by Ephemeral Interaction and published by Agafonoff, the game throws players into a surreal conflict between ancient lizard warriors and Slavic tribes, framing this clash with a mixture of tongue-in-cheek lore and unapologetically chaotic gameplay. From the moment you start a run, it’s clear that the game isn’t trying to present a serious historical narrative—it’s celebrating exaggeration, meme-infused humor, and an over-the-top vision of Hyperborea as a neon-soaked battleground where magic, metal, and myth collide. The hand-drawn sprites, punchy animations, and dramatic color palette give the game a distinct personality that stands out in a crowded genre. The core gameplay loop follows the familiar structure of “survivor-like” or horde-based roguelites, but with a tone unique enough to keep it engaging for the length of its short runtime. Each run begins with choosing a character from a small roster, each with their own aesthetic flair and combat flavor. Once in the arena, waves of enemies swarm relentlessly, turning the screen into a bullet-hell environment that demands constant movement and quick decision-making. Weapons drop frequently, offering a mixture of melee and ranged options that feel intentionally unbalanced in humorous ways. Upgrades acquired during a run can shift your strategy dramatically—turning you into a whirlwind of projectiles or an unstoppable melee brute—and these moment-to-moment surges of power are where the game shines brightest. The pacing is fast enough to feel exciting without overwhelming players unfamiliar with the genre. Aesthetic design plays a surprisingly large role in the game’s appeal. The pixel art, though simple, carries a bold charm: lizard warriors are drawn with exaggerated expressions, human enemies flail dramatically when defeated, and bosses tend to be imposing caricatures of mythic beasts or warrior archetypes. The soundtrack adds another layer of personality, shifting between retro electronica and heavy riffs that fuel the frantic energy of each run. Whether you’re carving through hordes with a glowing claymore or dodging projectiles in tight, hand-crafted arenas, the overall presentation gives the game a kinetic, almost comic-book quality that keeps it entertaining even when the mechanical depth is limited. However, it becomes clear fairly quickly that Lizard Survivors is not aiming for longevity or deep systemic design. The content is intentionally compact: there are only a handful of stages, enemy variations repeat often, and the procedural elements do just enough to keep back-to-back runs from feeling identical but not enough to disguise the game’s narrow scope. The absence of a meaningful progression system means that once you’ve experimented with the available characters and weapons, most surprises are behind you. While this minimalism makes the game approachable, it also limits the sense of long-term growth that defines many standout roguelikes. Some players may also find the chaotic visual effects and dense projectile patterns overwhelming or difficult to read, especially during late-run enemy swarms. Despite these limitations, the game manages to deliver exactly what it promises: a fast, loud, lightly comedic action experience that doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s the kind of title designed for short sessions—perfect for players who want immediate action, satisfying bursts of combat, and an unapologetically weird premise that doesn’t take itself seriously. The combination of humor, style, and tempo makes it easy to pick up and surprisingly hard to put down, at least for the first few hours. Fans of “quick hit” roguelites will find enough charm and momentum here to justify the experience, especially given the game’s accessible price point and well-executed aesthetic identity. In the end, Lizard Survivors: Battle for Hyperborea stands as a spirited, oddball entry in the roguelite genre—one that thrives on its commitment to style, humor, and instant gratification. While it lacks the depth or replayability of larger titles, its intensity, character, and playful absurdity give it a unique flavor that will appeal to players looking for a short, energetic diversion. It may be small in scope, but within that scope lies a burst of chaotic fun that proudly embraces its own strangeness. Rating: 8/10

I found this game to be occasionally fun, but also really annoying at times, with some questionable design decisions that keep it from being great. It's a Vampire Survivors clone with overt Slavik dialect peppered throughout. It's totally playable in English, but characters will constantly pop up and start talking to each other in some other dialect. While there's no way to know what they're saying, it has no bearing on the game play. That said, the projectile weapons are a must and there's only one for each of the two character sets you play as. There are three lizard and three human characters, and most are useless. The egg clamp and sniper weapons deal distance damage and they're really the only way to win, the other abilities sort of help but aren't necessary. You roll a new upgrade after each level, but some are ridiculously worthless and if you just pick a random character and start playing you are likely to lose. After 30 minutes the bosses appear, you kill them, and the game ends. The damage values are all over the place, I got instakilled at the ending a few times and I still have no idea why. The achievements are really annoying since you have to max level a bunch of worthless weapons and items, but if you play through a few times it's not too bad. Not a great game but playable.
