this is a sleeper best game of all-time. if you like roguelikes that compel you to press on to discover the weird and wonderful secrets of it, then buy this game. it now comes with the massive DLC expansion (that truly makes the game what it is when i got into it) as part of the full thing, with apparently another on the way if I do remember correctly! there's a lot I wish I could put into words about this game, but it is truly special... though to highlight somethings: it has an amazing OST, incredible spritework, well-polished and intricate unique gameplay mechanics, fun shmup/bullet hell combat, a surprisingly compelling narrative and world, some very stupid but fun humor, and A LOT more than what meets the eye. if you must pick it up on a sale go for it, but at $15 USD, it is an INSANE steal
The best way to describe this game is a mix between Enter the Gungeon (a game that I love) and an arcade shmup (I genre that I suck at). The first hours playing was the typical roguelite experience, learning by dying. But after a while I reached a point where the game demanded perfection, having to do precise micro-dodges so I don't get hit like an idiot during the boss fights. I was getting frustrated, and after a break, I returned to the game, managing to survive that wall... and once I unlocked the Sword Ship my enjoyment almost doubled, because now I could do something else aside from just "dodging and shooting". All in all, if you can overcome the mental wall of "this game looks too hard for me", you will find an excellent game with endless replayability and PLENTY of challenge.
The things this game expects you to do to defeat its final final final final boss is absurd and for absolute sickos. Unfortunately, I think I'm one of those sickos. This game is hard. Like HARD HARD. I don't think I've played something that not just expects, but demands this much from the player besides like Rain World. You gotta LOCK THE ♥♥♥♥ IN if you wanna even beat the first of the 4 final bosses and don't get me started on the ass clenching you gotta do for the others. This game wastes none of your time is one of the most satisfying and responsive roguelikes I've ever played. I love Star of Providence, but I dunno if you will. However, if you like games that make you feel like you're gonna have a heart attack (in a good way), I think you'll love it too. Good luck fellow sickos.
Insane bullet hell roguelike that's finally getting some of the attention it deserves. As someone who got into this game back before it was renamed, Star of Providence offers ever-escalating challenges up to backbreakingly insane secret boss fights buried under layers and layers of postgame challenges. Surprisingly robust difficulty levels change everything from basic enemy attack patterns to giving bosses entire additional phases. The amount of love that's gone into this indie gem has refined and enhanced the content on offer to being one of my all-time-favorite roguelikes. If you love chasing down optional superbosses that'll have you sweating bullets (pun intended), this game is for you.
i have played almost every modern roguelike/lite, and by far, this is the best. i can not sing its praises enough, and there is no competition. gameplay is entirely reliant on your ability to convert visual data into surgeon precise movements. might be the hardest game ive ever play by a long shot, but also the most rewarding. it will make you feel like NEO from the matrix. 10/10
