OG Sierra development at it's finest. Just remember the game is almost 30 yrs old, so it's not a modern interface, and there is no hand-holding. LOMSE has never been a problem to get running (Win95 to the present 11, on non-gaming laptops/towers), and it's a natural 4:3 aspect. It's OK to start on Easy for your first time, like most 90s games- Hard difficulty is meant to be challenging, and near-impossible for 1st-timers. Save often, and have multiple saves slots while learning the ropes. When you lose/die, all you can do is reload a save. If you have replay 30 mins of turns, you will not be happy. Mythical/Fantasy setting. Beautiful old-school graphics. Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Knights, Dragons, Giants, Necromancers, Lizardmen, Naval Ships, Kraken, Beast-riders, etc... 8 unique Faith/Races to choose from. You choose a Warrior, Thief or Mage for your Lord. Turn-based over-world movement around the map, real-time w/ pause for the battles (or you can auto-calculate). Great strategic options to play different ways.. using the rock-paper-scissors style in combat (Cavalry counters Ranged, Ranged counters Infantry, Infantry counters Cavalry), decimating enemies with Magic, or just building a big army of only cavalry.. it's all viable. Start in your land, and take-over other lands through conquest or diplomacy. Goal of the game is the defeat the Lord of Death, who will be actively running around the world doing his own thing while you build up your kingdom. After you beat Death, then you can play as Death in future playthroughs. Warriors fight and rally troops in battle. Mages do magic and research mage spells,. I know, unbelievable right? Thieves fight, take enemy champs hostage, and can also spy on allies/enemies, gaining info about opps, or even stealing opp resources. Semi-RPG.. Equip artifacts on your Lords & Champions, gain XP through battles and your units will level up and get stronger until they max-out, but you can't really choose any skills or stats. Lords/Champs can train units (warriors train inf/cav, thieves train ranged, mages train mages) Magic spells must be researched at a Mage Tower, so you have some input on what spells you want to use. Excellent depth in the mechanics, combat, kingdom management, and replay-ability. Not very story-heavy, but interesting setting/world-building. Basically, you write the story with the actions you take. Special Edition added new upgrades for each Faith/Race, and a new game mode that is more story-based, with stories influenced by King Arthur, Beowulf, and some original stories as well. Although it suffers from being released in 1997, and the limitations that come along with that, I can't say enough good things about this game. Maybe it feels a little clunky or wonky compared to newer games, but that is the same with many games from the 90s.. like Diablo, Doom or Fallout. Once you get the hang of it, many people enjoy the nuance of these older games. I would recommend to watch Youtube playthroughs, but there aren't many (with commentary) who know the game very well. They can actually mislead you, because they don't understand how they won/lost a battle, or which magic spell is the most important to focus on. (Overland Movement Spell is the answer, btw) So, you can watch them, just don't take their teachings as gospel. Savvy players will notice the systems at-play and will be just fine. The rest tend to figure it out after a couple tries. "Easy to play, difficult to master" is best way to describe it. I have played this game since it released, and every year or two, I go back for another round or two. Not a big community or anything, but there are a couple helpful websites that can give you data about the combat units and the Faith/Races differences. I just typed "LOMSE Unit Comparison" into the browser and some old site pops-up with a database you can find and compare all the stats in the game. OK, I'm done gas-baggin. This review has been nearly 30 years in the making. Thank you for your time. -- Happy Hunting --

What a great game from the glory years of Sierra. It came off the heals of Lords of the Realm 2, another great game, and was glorious. I had the demo as a game and pleaded with my parents that we get this game and it was rewarded with a Christmas morning. I played this and quickly found the best units and always got them. It did get a bit lame after a long time but then they had the fun extra missions of the legends of Urak. It was nice. So, when I came back as an adult I found a mod that rebalanced everything and made it fun. It is Mantera's mod by the way, here is the link http://mantera.xorgate.com/ It made the game far more fun, and made it so you can actually use some of the legendary summons when before it was near impossible. It can also increase the difficulty and make completely useless units actually usable. The balance was terrible before and it was easy to dominate, now it is more difficult but fun. I would suggest the mod and have fun with it.

Some things that appear simple are not so simple as they appear. For instance, chess. Or Lords of Magic Special Edition. The basic game is straightforward: pick one of seven religions, and either a warrior, thief, or mage as your leader. Try to survive the upcoming war of conquest waged by the Death religion to sacrifice non-believers and bring the God of Death to the world of Urak. Each religion's units have different strengths and weaknesses. The mages of each faction have spells that fit their ethos. For instance, Fire has Meteor Storm, Life has Resurrection, Chaos has Reincarnation, etc. Main gameplay is turn-based strategy and overland movement, but combats/encounters are real-time with a pause button. At the release of Lords of Magic Special Edition, a critical typo cripples one of the factions, Chaos. Since then, a LOMSE 3.0.2 community patch corrects the defect. Players can choose to play the game unmodified, with the community patch, or enhance it with ManTerA's GS5R3 mod, which make it possible to click on the spells in your faction Report to see the details of what each spell you own does. It also changes the spells so that Meteor Storm changes the terrain type to Lava on the square where it hits, and Earthbind actually binds non-Air flying creatures. There are a number of other changes, but gamers usually either love the GS5R3 mod, or they hate it. Community mods can also add werewolves to the Chaos faction, for those gamers that have a background in Werewolf the Apocalypse table top RPG. Originally, LOMSE had 640x480 resolution at its original 1997 release, so LOMSE is a game which can benefit from dxwnd to change its graphics resolution. By default, LOMSE will open fullscreen, making it kind of blurry on modern monitors. LOMSE's engine can only handle 16-bit audio. However, a community member updated and re-mastered soundtracks to eliminate audio hiss and update from 8-bit to 16-bit audio. Where is the replay value? After you beat the Death religion, you can play again as that faction. There are also five (5) legendary campaigns from the history of the world of Urak. On the community side, the GS5R3 mod includes 8 maps. Community modders also created another 53 other maps. LOMSE also permits playing interactively with other players across the internet, across LAN, or a null modem cable. Where did they go? Most of the team worked on the game Pharaoh(1998). - Lead Designer Chris Beatrice went on to Lead Design of Pharaoh(1998), Zeus(2000) + Poseidon(2001), and Caesar IV(2006) - Programmer Dave LeCompte was later Principal AI Programmer for HareBrainedSchemes' BattleTech(2018). - Artist Ron Alpert went on to create art for Pharaoh, Caesar III(2000), and Heroes of Might and Magic IV(2002). - Artist Adam Carrullio worked the same projects as Ron Alpert, then Rock Band 2&3 (2008&2010) and Dance Central 1&2 (2010&2011), - Musicians Keith Zizza and Henry Beckett are credited both as Musicians on Pharaoh + Cleopatra and with Original Music on Pharaoh: The New Era, the Unity remake of Pharaoh - Voice Actor Fran Brill is also better known as Zoe on Sesame Street. After 544 episodes of Sesame Street, she retired in 2021. - Voice Actor Ralph Byers has imdb credits from 1977 to 2020. He went on to voice Oswald Dunbar (Blackwater police chief) in Red Dead Redemption II (2019, Windows) - Voice Actor Keith Charles has imdb credits from 1951-2003. In 2001, he was onscreen as the Royal's Lawyer in the Royal Tenenbaums. - Voice Actor Thom Christopher has imdb credits from 1951-2017, including 71 episodes of One Life to Live and 11 episodes as Hawk in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1981). - Voice Actor Edmund Gilbert has imdb credits from 1963-2011. Ed also appears in the 1998 video game Baldur's Gate. He's been a guest star on television shows and cartoons, including The Wild Wild West (1965), Three's Company (1981), and DuckTales(1987). He's in 66 episodes of taleSpin(1990-1993) - Voice Actor Sam Freed has imdb credits from 1975 to 2020, notably the Judge in American Gangster (2007).

hardcore rules, steep learning curve and oldschool low polygon graphics are the only drawbacks to this, a semi-original high fantasy game made before the modern LOTR movies hit the genre. Its unique and fun in a timeless way and it needs a modern remake please please please please. each faction has enough variety to feel unique and different and has its own pros and cons and magics which make sense per lore. its really got something for people who like unique 4X.
