It's a very simple idle game, grindy to the right point but with good progression mechanics. There's an incredible lot to unlock and to discover.

I can't tell what got me so addicted to this game but apparently it got me addicted. It's simple, no music, barely any story. But just the look of how you're progressing further and further into the game just makes me happy. And hecc- I was relieved once I finished the last boss. In magic research all you do is building up your little text-based production while exploring text-based dungeons. Key feature is to "retire" once you hit an unbeatable point and -restart- the game with additional skills, upgrades and multiplicators which lets you progress further into your text-based adventure.

As somebody who plays a lot of idlers, it's sort of hard to place this one. It's got a both active "auto battling" and idle aspects, and it's not set up in such a way to allow you to completely neglect the active portion. The idle portion is essentially automated grinding for resources - mana or building materials. Also, there are a lot of random events to discover. These will only get easier to find over time, providing a reason to go back to areas you may have otherwise completely conquered. What I enjoyed was the incremental progress. Minor spoiler: You will find upgrades that generally only benefit you on your next run, so you are incentivized to reset. You can try to push as far as you can each time, but you'll likely hit a roadblock. This is the reason I mentioned that neither aspect can really be neglected: It could very well take you quite a long time in some situations to grind to the point where you can overcome a boss. Possible in theory but resetting allows faster progress to get back to where you were and beyond. You may also find it's easier to overcome with whatever storylines you've unlocked permanent bonuses for. The main bonus is as simple as: "You chose this primary school of Magic and it's reached such and such level in a playthrough," with a % increase to things such as mana gain or monster drops for each of your highest school levels reached combined, providing yet another reason to not only reset but to try something new - in this way, the rate of game progress will speed up. What it's not, however, is an infinite idler that just gives you bigger and bigger numbers - the kind of idler I think people are most familiar with. I certainly am. It's got a bit of a story behind it which is neat to see play out. These come in the form of essentially quest dialogues at specific points. Well worth the normal price of $5 if you're a fan of this style of idler.

This is a wonderful idle game, however the offline progression is a little less impressive than the online progression, making it a difficult choice for individuals who may lose interest in the game for a short while. I went through some of the essentially new game-plus mechanics, which were unnecessary and just served to increase playtime.
