It's... okay. Certainly on the easier side, with lots and lots of tutorial levels that introduce new mechanics and tricks in an isolated environment first, but too little levels that actually challenge your understanding. Still found it enjoyable, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to go through it again just for the developer commentary.

Let's face it, the main reason to play this game is if you've been following Mark's journey on Youtube/Nebula. I don't think a single-person developer has ever so well documented the entire gamemaking process, from initial conception to execution, reworking, and testing. is this a good game? Well, actually, yes! Quite. Yes it's short, but you need to understand that Mark put scads of time into the parts of the game that you don't see. Menus, physics, music (which he contracted out, but knocked it out of the park) accessibility options, tutorials, and overall POLISH; all that stuff takes so much time and is often the most challenging and underappreciated part of the development process. A normal developer that set out to make a game of this length would not have spent so much time getting those details perfect. Who cares if the menus look cool if the game is so short no one will even use them? Why does a 2 hour game need accessibility options? But the point of this exercise was to explore all aspects of the gamemaking process, so enormous time and energy went into the smallest aspects of this game, giving Mark a chance to try his hand at all these development challenges. I defy you to find another 2-hour indie game anywhere on Steam with this much attention to detail and polish. In its current state, the game simply needs to be handed over to a small team of trained monkeys to start busting out levels. Level design is the "easy" part once the look, scope, tone, texture, physics, and feel of the game are all in place. And Mark made many far-sighted tweaks to the game engine to ensure that future coders, if ever there were to be any, would be able to hop into Unity and easily pick up where he left off. While they're making levels, Mark can be coding an in-game level editor and BAM! MoM suddenly becomes a very respectable indie title. In one of his recent GMTK posts, Mark mentioned that he might return to the game to add some more levels and features. Mark, if you're reading this, I highly recommend you hand this game off to a small team of level designers. It would be a great coda to the gamemaking experience to watch this team fill your world with 5-10 hours worth of quality levels. Documenting this part of the design would be interesting as we would see the level progression process, what is kept, what is cut, how they are ordered, what new mechanics are added to keep things fresh, and the challenges with outsourcing and keeping your team connected with their goals in alignment. Don't worry, those of us that have been following you would still give you spiritual credit for making a one-man game :) Seeing the work that went into this really makes you appreciate something like Balatro, which was also made by a single, crazy-dedicated person. Imagining how a single person can make not just a cute, decent game, but game of the friggin year is bonkers. Hopefully, following Mark's journey during the development of this title has helped many people appreciate the genius of LocalThunk and the creative juices required for a dedicated team of people to make even this most humble of games. If you call yourself a dedicated gamer or are interested in learning more about a career in game development, you owe it to yourself to pull back the curtain, watch Mark's video series, and play this game for a behind-the-scenes look at the creative and development process.

F-ing magnets, how do they work?! Mind over Magnet is a charming platformer where you use the properties of magnetism to guide your robot character from level to level. Typically, you have magnetic fields as well as a magnet you can hold on to, that will help you get to the exit. The game starts easy and gradually ramps sup in difficulty, with more abilities being added. The game is on the short end with little replay since puzzles tend to only have one possible exit, but what is there is fun for a single 2 to 3 hour session. The length is forgiveable for an indie game priced appropriately in my opinion, but I do have one actual point of criticism: about halfway through the game stops explaining its mechanics and expect you to just find the solution. Even the included hints are rather useless, only showing the first step, which is usually obvious. Still, I had fun with it and consider it well worth its current 30% off discount price. If you go in not expecting too much, this game can be a lot of fun.

it was fine, the hardest puzzles were the ones that were the least explained and then it's like oh I didn't know you could do that. The last level was probably the best otherwise it was pretty easy overall

It's very hard to separate this as a game from the story of its development. The creator has a YouTube channel where he chronicled the development of the game, and it's clear that the decent number of units sold is primarily due to that platform. If this were uploaded by a less well-known developer with a typical marketing budget for an indie game, it doubtless would have sold a fraction of that. But that's hardly a knock on the game. Mark Brown has built up a lot of good will over many years as an excellent source of commentary on game design, and all of that work has now paid off for him in giving his game a bit of a boost. His videos aren't about shock value or stupid pranks or just random streaming. He has spent the last decade or so thinking very hard about what makes games interesting. In particular, his videos about the development of this game are his best content. It was quite inspiring to see him, a total novice in game dev, slowly evolve his skills to the point of publishing a finished product. As for the game itself, it's a fun little puzzle platformer. The movement feels good. It's quite fun bobbing up and down in a magnetic field as Min/Max, and I could still see that action turning into a Super Meat Boy-style pure platformer. It's pretty polished - I only saw one minor bug in my whole time with it (a drill bit that was stuck mid-way.) The puzzles are pretty balanced, not very difficult but usually stumping me for a minute or two before giving that ah-hah moment after a couple minutes. I wish there was a bit more depth, but it's fine for what it is. It doesn't feel like anything very new - I've played many 2D platformers over the years and this one doesn't particularly stick out, other than the story of its development. But it's an enjoyable ride and I had a great time with it,
