Mr. Saitou is a small, quietly affecting narrative adventure created by Laura Shigihara that trades mechanical depth for emotional clarity and thematic focus. Set within the same universe as Rakuen, it feels less like a grand standalone production and more like an intimate character study—one that explores burnout, loneliness, and the fragile boundary between obligation and personal fulfillment. The game’s modest scope is immediately apparent, but rather than working against it, that restraint becomes part of its identity, allowing it to tell a concise and focused story without unnecessary distractions. The narrative centers on Mr. Saitou, a middle-aged office worker whose life has been consumed by routine and professional expectations. After a sudden accident lands him in the hospital, his world begins to blur into something far more surreal. Through his interactions with a young boy, the story transitions into a whimsical alternate reality where Saitou takes on a strange new form and navigates an exaggerated version of corporate life. This fantasy setting is deliberately absurd—filled with odd creatures, bizarre workplace structures, and dreamlike logic—but beneath its humor lies a clear reflection of Saitou’s real-world struggles. The contrast between the mundane and the surreal is handled with care, allowing the game to explore serious themes without losing its sense of charm. Gameplay is intentionally simple, consisting mainly of exploration, dialogue, and light puzzle-solving. Players move through small environments, interact with characters, and complete straightforward objectives that gently guide the narrative forward. There is little in the way of challenge, and the mechanics rarely demand more than basic attention, which reinforces the game’s focus on storytelling rather than skill. While this approach makes the experience accessible, it also means that players looking for deeper or more varied gameplay may find it lacking. The interactivity serves primarily as a vehicle for narrative progression, and once that is understood, the game reveals itself as closer to an interactive story than a traditional adventure. What elevates Mr. Saitou is its tone and writing. The game strikes a delicate balance between humor and melancholy, often using lighthearted dialogue and quirky situations to mask deeper emotional undercurrents. The characters, while not extensively developed due to the game’s length, are memorable and distinct, each contributing to the overall atmosphere. There is a sincerity in the way the story unfolds, avoiding melodrama while still delivering moments of genuine emotional weight. The themes it explores—particularly the impact of overwork and the quiet isolation it can create—feel grounded and relatable, giving the narrative a resonance that lingers beyond its brief runtime. The presentation supports this tone effectively. The pixel art is simple but expressive, with environments that feel cozy and slightly surreal at the same time. Character animations and visual details are used sparingly but meaningfully, helping to convey emotion without overwhelming the player. The music, composed by Shigihara herself, is one of the game’s strongest elements. It shifts seamlessly between playful and reflective, enhancing key moments and reinforcing the emotional beats of the story. Certain scenes are elevated significantly by their musical accompaniment, creating a sense of cohesion between audio and narrative that stands out despite the game’s modest production values. However, the game’s brevity is both its defining strength and its most noticeable limitation. With a playtime of only a few hours, Mr. Saitou delivers a tightly paced experience that avoids filler, but it also leaves little room for deeper exploration of its world or characters. Some narrative threads feel like they could have been expanded further, and the emotional payoff, while effective, may feel somewhat restrained as a result. Additionally, the simplicity of the gameplay means that there is little replay value beyond revisiting the story itself. Even with these limitations, the game succeeds in what it sets out to do. It offers a focused, heartfelt experience that prioritizes emotional connection over complexity, using its short runtime to deliver a message that is both personal and widely relatable. It does not attempt to compete with larger narrative-driven titles in terms of scale, but instead carves out its own space as a smaller, more introspective piece. In the end, Mr. Saitou is a gentle and thoughtful experience that leaves a lasting impression despite its size. It is best suited for players who value storytelling, atmosphere, and emotional nuance over mechanical depth. While it may feel slight compared to more expansive games, its sincerity and clarity give it a quiet strength that makes it memorable long after it ends. Rating: 8/10

I played this game when it first released and I adored it. I just finished replaying it and honestly I think I adore it even more. There's so many silly and cute charming little things while also still managing to make you cry and really it's just so beautiful. That's not even mentioning the music and the art which is ABSOLUTELY stunning btw. I do recommend playing Rakuen before this but even if you don't you're not missing anything but small details so really either way I highly suggest this game
