Extremely relaxing and beautiful game but also a little demanding in terms of (very basic) math skills you need in order to progress. Loving the trippy dream world. Only big gripe is: extremely wordy for a game about some frogs. Yeah I get it, the story is supposed to be somehow epic, but you can also do that with little to no words at all. Next time please try that. If I need to read another diary of a frog scientist #3's intern, I'll go drown myself in the Spawning Pools. Oh wait, I'm a frog and I can't read. Ribbit.

This review is for people on the fence while it is still on sale. I will write more later. I only have 7.4 hours in, and it feels like I have scratched the surface. An excellent game. [*]-Apico had clear Forestry inspiration, but Mudborne is its own thing. It has all the same genetic fun while bringing a unique system to the table. [*]-You can press space to ribbit, and this will attract wild frogs for you to catch. [*]-There is a pokedex-like page for the frogs, which helps you find variants and gives you really cute images of your frog species in their natural environment (an environment which might be a pile of other sleepy, tiny frogs). [*]-The frogs can be so angry or chill that they change the temperature--a clever way of handling climate! [*]-Everything is powered by Croakwork machines--the loudness of your baby frog ribbits. [*]-You can breed dapper frogs. Liked Apico or the Forestry mod? Then get it, case closed. Do you not like Apico/Forestry? Then this does bring some changes that can win you over. The genetic system has moved to a number system, allowing for much more flexibility, and you never have to 'start at 0' with things. You can keep multiple 'bases' to speed up breeding, but usually you can get what you need in two or three generations...IF you like math puzzles. The math is not super complex, you have a preview before any point of no return with hatching eggs, and there is a predictor that helps you with multiple generations of planning (to make sure it works like it does in your head!). So far, there are no random mutations to wait around for--you have specific number goals and hints are scattered throughout the game if you have trouble finding what numbers make new species. This may change as I play more, but for now it is very straightforward. I can find things without resorting to going to a wiki and finding that Extra Rare Frog 1 and Super Common Frog 2 have a 1% chance of making a legendary secret species or something. I still need to gather a bunch of mushrooms and plan things out to get the perfect set of numbers--and sometimes need to plan out several generations in a row!--so the effort still feels rewarded. It is more of an 'active' breeding system than past games. Less waiting, less RNG, more gameplay. To be continued, maybe!

You can press space to ribbit and nearby frogs will ribbit back. Not sure what else the game does but definitely worth a try if that's your thing.

They took Apico - already a fantastic top down management game - and added lore, puzzles, a dream world, and frogs. This game is ribbiting.
