Mihara-san, please take my money as penance for bootlegging the previous TGM games. For the uninitiated: This game was in development hell for over a decade due to rights negotiations between Arika and The Tetris Holding Company (TTC) breaking down, so its release is both a surprise and a cause for celebration for Tetris fans worldwide. It's a big deal that this game exists at all. Review at 15-ish hours in: - This is the type of game where you need to set your own personal goals. Unless you're among the top 0.01% worldwide, you're not getting Grandmaster anytime soon. That's part of the appeal of this series: TGM is a game for people who enjoy setting new goals and watching themselves improve over time. - I'm going to be reviewing the game based on the 'TGM' ruleset, since that's half of what makes these games unique. The 'TGM' ruleset has different rules for how pieces rotate and move, as well as a more punishing sequence generator for the incoming pieces. - Unfortunately, it seems like the Tetris Holding Company pushed to water down some of TGM's mechanics again, as the game now resets lock delay on move/rotate. It could also be that this was a deliberate decision for balance, I couldn't say. That said, the upward kicks for T and I pieces are definitely welcome in my eyes. - Normal Mode: I wish that Normal mode had just a bit more challenge to it, but maybe I'm just underestimating my own abilities. - I haven't spent as much time with Asuka as I have with Master and Normal. - Master mode is more analogous to Shirase/Death from previous titles. It starts at 20G and is yet to be cleared by anyone as of writing this review. - Konoha: I can't get my brain to wrap around it yet. - Shiranui: The most competent CPU fighters in any official Tetris game, no contest. These CPUs will set up midgame multispin setups like it's no big deal. - I wish this game had the traditional grading system from TGM1-3. It made it easy to choose your next personal goal. - Replays, practice mode, and "practice from replay" are all VERY welcome additions. - Overall, it was worth my money, but whether it's worth yours comes down to whether you're interested in a Tetris game that you'll be coming back to for months, if not years. PBs as of writing this review, for reference: Normal: Clear in 9:20, survived credits Master: Level 630

Tetris at its core, right? Sure, there's Marathon play in this like many other Tetris games available, using standard rotation rules, but that's about all this game has in common. TGM4, and overall, the TGM series, is NOT your ordinary game of Tetris. It runs a level and rotation rule separate from standard guidelines, and throws in unique twists at higher levels of play. Speeds will increment very quickly within your first few minutes -- this game truly tests your stacking and speed. The TGM series of games, since 1998, was mostly exclusive to arcades in Japan, until now, with ports to PS4/Switch and a brand new installment breaking that trend. There are several other modes, some not for the faint of heart. Konoha is fairly easy with big pieces and recognizing full clears; Asuka and Master are reserved for the top players. There's also an in-game textbook where you can learn how all the controls and rotations work. $35 looks steep at first, but as someone who's looked forward to a TGM release on Steam for around a decade, I knew I had to take the leap. There were issues at launch, but ARIKA has been especially responsive over the past week. Even if I only have a couple hours in as of writing, I got my first 999 clear. I look forward to improvements in my play -- hungry for more.

It's a miracle this game ever released after spending decades in licensing hell. The price may seem steep, but considering this is twenty times less than the price of the circulating second hand copies of TGM1-3, it seems a steal compared to that. There are a few issues at launch but these have been pledged to be fixed and the most glaring ones have already been done so. Positives: - Superior Ti-ARS rotation system that makes playing instant gravity much more smooth. - Difficultly is hard but fair, and there are modes which are designed to get users up to speed. I would say that most modes are between TGM1 and TGM2-3 in terms of difficultly, but "Master" is potentially harder than Death/Shirase. - This is also helped by extensive practice functionality, removing the use case for unofficial cl*nes. - No torikan mechanic artificially limiting progress, this was what caused me to stop playing TGM2-3 and I'm actually glad that time is less emphasised at all in favour of survival or gaining tetrises. - Functionality to remove hold/extra previews so you can replicate TGM1-3 mechanics. - Game is very responsive compared to TE:C. I don't experience much input delay. - It's rare for an official game to have a VS mode that is actually challenging, there are many difficultly options that means you will always have a fair match. - The soundtrack is amazing. It's definitely my favourite out of a series that already had very good soundtracks. - Graphics are very well defined and easy to read, which is necessary to play fast. Negatives: -No key rebinding for now (but this is pledged to be fixed soon, and is partly the fault of licensing). The default keys are mostly sensible, but up is rotate instead of hard/sonic drop which is what most players are used to binding them to. -This has been massively improved since launch, but I'm still experiencing occasional random full DAS charges in low gravity and excessive rotations. -I don't think move reset was a necessary addition for Classic Rule, but this might have been forced on them by TTC. Verdict: Best tetris game on the market right now, though someone more casually-focused that prioritises graphics might prefer TE:C.

I'll need to leave a more in-depth review later, but I just got done with a 6 hour session and am enjoying it a ton so far. It's exciting to have a new TGM challenge to sink my teeth into. I know some other players have been have been running into some issues with keyboard controls etc.. But, hopefully when the problems are resolved by the devs, this can be a game that all Tetris fanatics can return to and enjoy.

A lot of negative reviews due to keyboard mapping not quite working right on launch, which is sad to see. Other then this (and some slippery DAS issues), this is a pretty great implementation of TGM in a modern format that you can help support the devs with. The OST is pretty good, and they've implemented TGM1 as TGM Controls-> Standard Mode. There's even a practice mode implemented to test out some the incredibly hard gimmicks you'll find that's fairly robust. A bit puzzled at some of the review talking about diagonal inputs not working... they've never been recognized in a TGM game ever... probably some people from Tetris Effect wondering why certain things from there don't work here. Several techniques TGM players use even rely upon them not being implemented (zangi-moves). tl;dr Great game, and a great implementation of TGM... unless you're a keyboard player, in which I would wait for the keyboard rebinding issues to be fixed. If you're a Tetris player, I'd advise you to try out Tetris Effect first to get your fix unless you're ready for the challenge here: you're getting the TGM experience and a few brand new modes to cover the gamut of skill levels in it, but not much else.
