Whatever happened during development, it is making me really doubt on whether to recommend this game or not. Content: (Rough guess) 70% visual novel, 30% gameplay. What's good: The gameplay excluding some timed/puzzle sections. The combat is a mix of bullet hell and soulslike. It can be challenging at times and changing your "build" can make fights easier - I would say even mandatory in some. Most if not all battles can be skipped if it isn't to your liking, which is good (for the wrong reasons, refer below) The story and most of the characters. Starts slow, you don't know (much) more than the MC. It is a complex and deep story, nothing is as straightforward as it seems. Characters have their own personalities, stories and past. There are forgettable characters, but only a few. Not so good and bad: Timed puzzles - obnoxious and/or annoying due to certain mechanics: infinite enemy spawning with timed traps while the entire section is timed as well, and a bad camera angle for bullet hell sections (again, timed for whatever reason). Controls - Some keys can't be changed, like the movement keys. I'm used to ESDF so this is a problem, albeit minor. The audio or dub (Cantonese and Mandarin). There are far too many lines not dubbed, this includes in the main story. The Japanese dub which came later is more complete for whatever reason but I prefer the original dub. The subs, the quality plummets the further you go in the story. You can still sort of "guess" what should be there but this lack of effort with a lacking dub is unacceptable. It is really a shame, a good story with interesting characters, overall good gameplay got ruined by a lacking dub and sub. Since the main focus of this game is the novel part, that's where my focus lies when giving it a rating. 7 - Being generous here because I liked the story a lot and replayed the game once. All the endings (8) can be achieved in one playthrough (good).
Noctuary is a wonderful experience from start to finish though it’s hard to talk about the game without hinting at spoilers. The characters are multi‑dimensional and generally avoid overused tropes. The story delivers plenty of happy and sad moments, and it’s easy to become invested in the main characters' journey. The gameplay segments are enjoyable, and do a great job of breaking up the narrative, keeping the pacing fresh so you’re not reading for hours on end. I also appreciate the quality‑of‑life features; being able to adjust difficulty on the fly, and the option to replay missions after finishing the game makes it easy to achieve 100% completion. It’s obvious the developers put a lot of love into creating this game, and I'm only disappointed I'm playing this two years after it released.
This game has really unique and well-crafted world-building. Compared to the more generic JRPG settings, this one feels more despairing and tragic- and that's what caught my interest and curiosity right from the beginning. And it didn't disappoint. It's a game with a great story and good characters. The first half has some Utawarerumono vibe- starting off slow and relaxed, focusing on character interactions and building, and there are genuinely many deep and likable characters. It also gives that same sense of adventure you get from Trails in the Sky, where you see the duo working hard toward their shared dream. But what really made me rate the story 9.0/10 is everything that happens after the first big twist (around the halfway point). The twist itself might be somewhat predictable since the story hints at it early on, but what follows still manages to surprise, adding even more tragedy and emotional weight to this world and the development of its main cast. The goal of the so-called "villain" is also pretty interesting- it's the kind of idea that some other great stories already start with, but you are the one who helps it happen instead. Seeing this familiar concept approached from the opposite direction feels refreshing. The amount of late-game choices is impressive too, and I really enjoyed seeing the many possible endings to this world. The gameplay is surprisingly fun for an ARPG that looks so basic and unbalanced at first. Each of the duo has three combat styles, though honestly only one of them ends up being worth using most of the time. But despite that, combat never feels too repetitive for a few reasons. First, there actually isn't that much combat- probably 90% of the time you're just reading story scenes. Second, the boss fights are well-designed. Starting from the one right before the big twist, every boss has its own attack rhythm, and their fast-paced moves make each battle intense and satisfying. It's rare to see an ARPG where bosses move and attack that quickly- to the point you barely have time to counter. And finally, the Blessing system (the passive skill setup) is surprisingly fun to experiment with. Trying out different builds for different bosses or strategies gives it more depth than I expected. This system has much more room for creativity and depth than it first seems. Story- 9.0 Combat- 7.5 Overall experience- 8.4
WOW! This is a great game. Gameplay. At the beginning it seemed like a visual novel with some easy battle stages just for some change of pace. But later in the game, battles became more interesting, more difficult, and with more variety. And really become an important part of the game. Music. Music is good. All the music pieces are good. Not to mention boss battle music. Story. Unlike many other visual novels, Noctuary has a linear story. There are several endings, but most of the story is the same. Starting a little bit slow, it is still able to hold my attention. And soon after, the prelude story becomes interesting with several unexpected turns. The most special part about it is probably that the game doesn't really care about time. Whether events happened one right after another or there was a year-long gap is not important. And this is cool because people in this world could live for centuries. Lore. I like how the world of Noctuary is described in the story. You get pieces here and there, and not always true ones. Times, places, characters are different when different people are telling about past events. In my opinion, that makes the world more alive. A world where all people could live for hundreds of years is quite unique. It allows us to see some things in a different light. Also important for me was that there weren't things alien to this world (e.g. electronic musical instruments, cars, or food), unlike many other games that do, because our real modern world has them.
