Mechanically, impressive. Graphically, not so much. It's probably for the better that they aren't too graphically complex, since it's runs without any issues. It's simple to get the hang of, but offers more choices and variations throughout a run than other survivor roguelikes, like randomizing stats given to abilities when leveled up, shops every 1/3 of a run. There are a dozen or so characters, each has their own talents to pick from prior to a run (more accessed as you level them up individually). During a run, level-ups are stored as a currency you spend in a pause-menu, in-run talent tree. You can pick which buffs, weapons or skills to level up on your own time. It doesn't share the pick-one-of-3/4 pop-up levels other action roguelikes use. Because there's leveling for each character, levels for each character for pre-run buffs, and another progression tree that's universal for all chacters, full progression is deep and can easily see it taking a hundred hours to get everything maxed. For $9, it's hard to complain, but I'll include a few at the bottom of the review. Currently tried all available characters, still have 5 to unlock. I've begun clearing all levels on Hard, with an Extreme difficulty untouched, using mainly one character I've figured out a core build for. Just unlocked Daily Challenges, which unlocks skins for your characters. I've only gotten like 1/3 of the universal perks in the main menu, mostly upgraded gold/seed/XP gain to scale into longer runs easier. There's easily 50+ more hours of replayability, maybe more. Some gripes: 1. Rerolling stats on an ability's level-up costs the same currency used for leveling up, which requires XP, and most of the time you're just going to buy it regardless. In the main-menu skill-tree, you can get a handful of free rerolls for every future run, but it becomes an underused mechanic that'd make runs more interesting if you got rerolls randomly from enemies, or some other source in a run. 2. Go into the settings > graphics, and turn on enemy attacks show up above everything. You'll thank me later. The 2000s flash graphics will bite you in the ass as you reach higher levels/difficulties, and enemies will blot out the AoE templates you need to dodge. That setting makes them sit above the hordes. I think they could've easily made that a default, and changed the templates to bright rings that wouldn't obscure enemies while still making them always visible. 3. Mute the music and turn on your own when you get tired of it. I wish more games outside the rhythm game genre would acknowledge people don't want to hear the same 5 tracks on loop for 100+ hours, and put a built-in player to insert your own collection. Include some more ambient filler alongside these looping 5-min orchestral tracks so they maybe don't get old so fast, or save them for the shrines and bosses.

Nordic Ashes: Survivors of Ragnarok – Vikings, Chaos, and a Hint of Ragnarök If Vampire Survivors and Norse mythology collided in an epic battle, the result would be Nordic Ashes: Survivors of Ragnarok . 🪓 This roguelike combines intense survival combat with tactical build optimization and an atmosphere that would make Odin proud. But is it truly the ultimate Viking experience or more of a drinking binge gone awry? Story Forget epic tales—this is about sheer survival! You choose from a growing roster of Norse heroes , battle against waves of monsters , and strive to stay alive as long as possible. Along the way, you unlock new abilities, experiment with various builds, and hope your inner Viking is strong enough to withstand Ragnarök. 🔹 Dark Norse Fantasy – The world looks like it was ripped straight from a saga book. 🔹 Roguelike Progression – Each death brings you closer to your next perfect run. 🔹 Endless Chaos – Hordes of enemies, power-ups, and rune enchantments ensure no two games are alike. Whether you ascend to Valhalla or go down like a wet rag—it’s all up to you. Strengths and Weaknesses ✔️ Norse Mythology Meets Addictive Gameplay – Perfect for fans of gods, axe fights, and endless monster slaying. ✔️ Motivating Progression System – Each run pushes you forward without feeling like you’re hitting a wall. ✔️ Diverse Builds – Combine various abilities to discover which combination slays best. ✔️ Active Developers – New content, balancing changes, and even the removal of unnecessarily grindy achievements—the devs truly listen to the community! ❌ Occasionally Chaotic and Overwhelming – When everything explodes and enemies come from all sides, it’s easy to lose track. Stay alert or perish. ❌ Steep Learning Curve – Those unwilling to sacrifice some early runs for Odin’s glory will suffer initially. ❌ Hordes Everywhere – If you’re not careful, you’ll be overrun faster than a village in a Viking raid. ✔️ Recommended for / ❌ Not Recommended for ✔️ Fans of roguelikes with a Norse flair. ✔️ Players who enjoy optimizing builds and creating their own overpowered war machines. ✔️ Those who’ve always wondered if they could survive Ragnarök. ❌ Players who prefer slow, strategic gameplay. ❌ Individuals with a phobia of enemy hordes. ❌ Anyone seeking a relaxed, stress-free Viking life —here, there’s only chaos. Achievements The achievements range from “Spend gold 25 times” to “Die 25 times” . Notably, the developers remove unnecessarily grindy achievements, showing that they truly listen to the community . Want the full collection? Just mow down everything that moves. 🪓 My Opinion Nordic Ashes: Survivors of Ragnarok is a brutal, addictive, and incredibly entertaining roguelike that’s perfect for fans of Norse mythology and chaotic gameplay. It already boasts a wealth of content, and with active developers, the chances are high that it will get even better . Scientific Estimate: My playtime is based on countless “just one more run” moments that eventually led to an existential crisis. I recommend but with some caveats. I really enjoy the overall gameplay, where it's fun to boot up the game on my Steam Deck and zone out while playing the game. Some of the characters are really cool, with my favorite one being the merchant whose health is a shared resource with the gold you pick up. It really makes you think about when to buy items vs. saving money to be able to have enough damage / health to survive. The main criticism is that the runs feel very similar, most of the enemies are the same (with different skins), relics are often repeated (especially at the start of a run), and bosses often have invulnerability windows to draw out the fight. The game is feeling really drawn out, but there's a lot here to chip away at over a long period of time. I'd probably buy any DLCs that come out because I do enjoy a lot of the core experience. Wishlist / Random thoughts: - I wish there was a way to customize runs without feeling like you take a disadvantage from gaining the meta-resource. - The Ragnarok mode doesn't really add enough variety to the levels other than "make it harder" - More Easter Eggs / Discoverability / Exploration things would be cool - A hero meta-level up catch-up mechanic would be much appreciated to cut down some of the grind - A "turbo" mode would be cool -- my runs typically take 20+ minutes. - A more intense 10-15 minute mode would be neat. Something that requires you to be really strategic with the places you go on the map as maybe you'd struggle to get to all the landmarks before hitting a boss. - Boss rush?? 🤔

I love this game. Nearly perfect for this kind of diversion. A steal for the price, if you're even considering it, you should bag it. Download is silky fast. Design is mint, and the game play hook is fun. Yes, this game is actual FUN! I'm going to play it right now. That has become such a stupid thing to say in a review, but I'm not sorry. It's a good game.
