In general the game is good and it has a lot of potential, though this can be said about a lot of Early Access titles which end up not getting updated and being forgotten by the devs. So far the devs are actually still pushing out updates and improving the game, which is why I do believe that this game once it does reach 1.0 will become a proper hit. There are several things which MUST be improved with the game inorder for it to reach a wider audience and also be worthy of 1.0, but listing only the negatives I think could be demoralizing to the devs who have also put in a lot of good features so I will list those as well. The setting, story and art direction in general is actually very well done, especially considering the small budget, lack of manpower and experience of such a small studio. The dystopian setting is well done due to it's ability to not seem overly fictitious, I don't know how many people who play the game will have grown up in a poor country, but Open Sewer is not that far removed from reality, replace the mushrooms with a more common substance like crack cocaine, meth or even just pure and simple poverty, and you may just think your are in a regular third world country ghetto, society still works like it does everywhere else, but a fog of despair and misery will always cover the city, being pumped by the heart of darkness that lies underneath the roots of this city, whether it's poisoning itself until it eventually also dies or whether its feeding on the suffering it creates, I do not know. There is too much suffering in this city, yet all the people I've met were trying their hardest to go on living. The story starts off slow but it get's going very well if you give it just a little bit of time, very excited to see how it progresses. But you can't attract players with a not-yet finished story, so the gameplay is the reason you may even consider purchasing the game at this point. The gameplay has a very good skeleton but is lacking major important things inorder for it to be very good. 1. The game is in need of a proper tutorial, not just for the start of the game, but for the mechanics in general. I have never had to google stuff more than for this game, there is sooooo much information that is missing about just...everything. I had no idea how to create alcohol, how to start breeding animals, how to cook, how to process my ore, how to sell stolen items before unlocking Passmore, how do i fight my addictions, just anything, it takes a lot of patience to learn this and most people will not give this game that much time, inorder to maintain new players you guys must add tutorials for several key mechanics. 2. The recipe system needs to be improved, it is fine at the start but it stops you from progressing later in the game as you may be missing the recipe to make the thing you want and unless you google how to make it, you will just have to pray you get lucky and find it somewhere, this system doesn't work as it encourages players to just google stuff and for items you craft at a workshop this doesnt work as you can only craft stuff you have blueprints for there. With the Baazar update, there should be an NPC added or an item, like a better Drawing Board, which you can use to acquire every non-special recipe in the game for the right price of either money or specific items. Perhaps a Drawing Board with a recipe where you get a 100% chance to learn something you do not know or an NPC that teaches you how to make it for money. 3. The addiction system is badly thought out due to lack of explanation, you must teach the player that he needs to get rid of the addictions instead of fueling them and teach him the basics of how to do this. When i started out I thought the addictions were a game mechanic similar to hunger and thirst, something I have to maintain instead of remove, it took so long and so much googling to understand how to get rid of mushroom addiction and other addictions. The doctor's services are also not very good for this, he should be the one to tell you how to fight em instead of just telling you to get medicine against shrooms addiction, which when consumed adds a tiny amount to the addiction level but not as much as you would get from regular mushrooms. This is never explained and I couldn't figure out why i was still addicted after several weeks of consuming the meds, cuz i was at 100% and constantly consuming the medication everytime my shroom need appeared, bounced my addiction after it had gotten lowered to like 95% back to 100%, it was an infinite loop. The player must be explained the going cold turkey on substances mechanic and taking medication only after a long time of withdrawls. Also the doctor's information about your health status is very uninformative, just give us the numbers like you can get in the console with the "player_stats get" command, do not be afraid to break the fourth wall for better gameplay mechanics, give the player better information, that command saved my life in the game as i used it to monitor my addictions until I was rid of them. 4. Some mechanics are badly thought out as they can get you stuck in infinite loops, this once again could be avoided with proper tutorials for the player. My addiction to shrooms got my guy very depressed and my mental health was constantly at under 10% for weeks until I finally cured that ♥♥♥♥. This was a horrible infinite loop cuz there are activities which demand mental health to be done, like passing time in prison. I literally could not pass time in prison and had to wait out a several hour sentence like an idiot not being able to skip time. Prison escape isn't a good solution for this as a low level lockpicker cannot reliably escape prison, this is not good gameplay guys, I had to cheat to avoid this and had to research on google as to wtf was happening and why my guy was constantly depressed. I also couldn't get rid of this depression without using abusive substances like alcohol or smoking, as other mental health bettering activities can only be done if you have a certain amount of mental health threshold, like voulenteering or reading a newspaper so I could not do those. 5. This is a minor issue but it is nonetheless an issue, but there are quite a few grammatical mistakes in the game, I understand you guys are not native speakers, but please check the text using the many tools available online before putting it in the game. 6. The amount of resources needed to upgrade the apartments is insane and certain items cannot be reliably obtained either, making it even more insane. But I'm not so much complaining about the money as that seems like an easier fix, just add sellers with big inventories (In the Baazar update), but the materials are the bigger issue. The seller doesn't always stock the stuff you want and it becomes a luck's game whether or not he has glass or tiles or tarps or whatever you may need. Please add a reliable seller in the Baazar for materials. Also, some stuff you cannot craft even if you wanted to do it yourself (i.e tarps), considering the insane amount of materials needed, all of them should be craftable or if you really want to keep some non-craftable, then those MUST be always available at a certain merchant, this stops the game from being like a loot box simulator where luck is the deciding factor instead of player planning and resourcefullness. 7. Some choices you make at the start have very boring influences later on. The police being a bit rougher with you does not compare to an NPC like the crazy neighbor who has so many interesting interactions with world. If the other choices cannot be this interesting, then make him spawn on every save with a way of kicking him out of the apartment to make place for other guests. 8. Game runs badly, even on a good PC like mine. Lowering graphics helps a lot though. There are other things but i've reached max word count, but these I considered the most important ones.

I found this game by happenstance while looking for niche games and fell in love the moment I saw it. I've been playing for about 2 months and have already dumped over 250hrs into this game. * TL;DR: Grungy/Grimy Life sim where you can renovate/decorate a rundown apartment building while you farm crops to cook, turn into moonshine, or make your own drug lab out of glowing mushrooms. (And more) Fallout-esk vibes. Spooky vibes but not scary. * Story: A fungal disease breaks out after the discovery and mass consumption of these strange green mushrooms. The elites decide to herd all the "Undesirables" into a decrepit part of the city and you're unfortunate enough to be one of those people. By happenstance or Error, you're given a condemned tenement that you make into your home while finding out the darker secrets of both the city, and the Fungal disease that's plaguing the population, and if you're not careful..You'll catch it, too. * Mechanics: "Homeless Life Sim" is what a friend called Obenseuer and its not far off. You start off with basically nothing and have to scrounge the town for resources and find ways to make money, by either doing odd jobs or by producing something back at home. All of this while also juggling Basic needs (Food, Water, Sleep, Bathroom, and Mental health) and addictions (Smoking, Drinking, Mushrooms, Gambling, and Ducks) * Skills: There are also tons of different skills that you're able to master and use to your advantage to pull yourself out of the slum and make some real money. Make your own Moonshine with the Mash you made yourself in a rusty barrel. Break people peoples home with Lockpicking and strip them of their valuables then throw them into the dishwasher to "Launder" them with your Cleaning skill. Grow your own fruits and vegetables with Farming then cook them up with your cooking skill to make Gourmet meals. Or start your own Mushroom lab and make drugs to sell! And more. * Building: You're able to upgrade the entire building and individual apartments to rent out for passive income while also fully decorating and upgrading your own apartment, as well as the basement. While you're not able to build structure, the detail you can put into your own personal spaces is incredibly impressive. There is a decent number of furniture options but you're also able to place any item in your inventory as through it were its own piece of "furniture", giving you many options for your builds like also giving your place that cluttered, homey vibe. Truly letting you turn your crack house, into a crack home. * Vibes: The vibes itself are immaculate. It really gives me fallout vibes in how "Grungy" and "Grimy" it feels while also having an almost whimsical feel to it. Being both dark with moments of levity. There are tons of horror elements, though I wouldn't consider it a traditional horror game by any means. * Downsides: Its still in early access and only has 3 fulltime devs, so updates are slow. The game isn't super optimized, especially the mines, so loading screens can be a bit long and you can run into some frame rate issues. The game is far from balanced and there is a fair share of bugs, glitches, and exploits. But honestly, none of it worse than the average Bethesda game.

This is one of the least realistic games I've ever seen. Not because of the mutating mushrooms, but because it's about being a landlord who does work to maintain a property.

The Duality of Stalburg. In one game I am Markuu Siltanen, overworked and underpaid civil engineer. In this one, I am Kirin Heisenbee, landlord, slumlord, and druglord. I'll probably write a more complete review when the game fully releases, but for now, I'll just say this: It's like Pathologic if Pathologic wanted to be something other than pure self-inflicted torture, this game can be fun, it can also be frustrating, it's usually satisfying to play either way. For the devs: A notes tab in the menu, or any other means of taking notes in-game (I don't care if I have to buy a pen for 1000 RM) is the thing I want to see most in this game.

i wish i could progress the game but i cant help but break into every apartment and steal every single object that isnt nailed down. thankfully, i can stop by the rat vending machine for a quick snack between smoking mushroom infused cigarettes and avoiding the hat man living in my walls. take all your savings, and go gambling. you can win 2000% of your money but only lose 100%. its simple math. i am late to my appointment at dr. pena for fungal growth removal. i dont have the money to pay for treatment. i go home, drinking my expensive stolen alcohol collection and pass out on the floor. wake up in a haze realising the hat man has molested me in my sleep again. such is the life of a winner.
