8/10 Oddworld New 'n' Tasty is a faithful remake of Abe's Odyssey that fixes most of the original games problems, unlike soulstorm which completely butchered exodus, which was an amazing game. While the original game was good, I was never the biggest fan of it. Having played the far superior exodus first back in the ps1 days, I was spoiled on what was a longer, better and far more polished experience and when I did get around to playing Odyssey, I was a little disappointed. And while it still isn't as good a game as Exodus, New N Tasty is the definitive way to play the first game. The new visuals make the game quite nice, as do the new cutscenes. The levels are all recreated faithfully, and the QOL improvements make them less tedious to travers. The biggest one adding the quicksave function that Exodus had, as well as being able to move multiple Mudokins at once, as opposed to 1 at a time like the original. It would have been nice for some new content to have been added since its not a long game, even if you go for a perfect run, though there is a 3$ dlc that adds a brand new level. Still, unless you're a stickler for the original game's pre-rendered backgrounds, New N Tasty is both a great starting point for new players as well as returning players that don't want to have to deal with the original game's shortcomings. Just be sure to play the original Abe's Exodus before moving on to soulstorm.
You know how it goes - you remember a game from your childhood, and in your memory it always looks several times more beautiful and cooler than it actually was. That’s exactly what happened here. The game looks exactly the way I remember it from playing it on the PS1. I looked at what the original actually looked like, and really felt that contrast for myself. This game looks the way I imagined it in my head back when I played it on the PS1. The game is great, and I had a lot of fun playing through it. But if you’re making a full remake, for ♥♥♥♥’s sake, give us some decent controls! And that’s my main complaint about this game - the controls are extremely unresponsive and clunky. Disarming mines is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nightmare, and you really have to struggle just to make a jump properly. The controls are incredibly clunky and, in most situations, just unpleasant to use. But still, I have to give this game a like. The developers did something amazing: they managed to recreate a childhood game that originally looked absolutely terrible and ugly, but they recreated it the way a player who played it 20 years ago remembers it. You don’t see stuff like that being made anymore!
10 years later i finally come back to play this game to continue where i left off in my Oddworld 100% marathon, and coming back i do not remember the remake being like this I feel like the aura of the original has been lost with a piss filter and bloom attached to it and it is incredibly bright for a game that's in a very dark setting, Abe's animations looks sluggish when he runs in the first cutscene to the delivery of his lines not being as good Controlling Abe in this is like a snails pace, there is no crazy movement tech in this one and you are very slow why in the original you were zooming if you knew your way around, and i hate the camera angles, why on gods name did they do this, just keep it a still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ camera, we don't need this weird cinematic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because half the time i miss jumps and get timing incredibly wrong because the angle is screwed. And i will say again i do not remember this game being like this, it's like it suddenly changed also controller for steam is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, you have to bind everything which is annoying because half the buttons don't work My only gripe with this game is i get they want a 1 to 1 remake but i would've loved extended cutscenes like the new ones did, they did not need to rush it like how the PS1 did, like they aren't limited at all just make them longer or do something new I like the game though and kinda wish it wasn't made in 2015 and they could've done more with this 100% - This overall i would say is an easy 100% but holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ the speedrun achievement where you have to save everyone was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nightmare where i cannot decide if this is 100% was hard or not but that achievement gave me at least three playthroughs and i somehow managed where a bug depleted my time or something which great, the mudokin locations are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, you really have to have muscle memory to know every location because after Rupture Farms my mind goes beserk, i will say this one was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tedious with this achievement specifically, i definitely don't want to do it again anytime soon. Abe would not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ control well at all and just stop randomly, he is actual ♥♥♥♥ to control during a speedrun man, the movement in this game sucks ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ like i geuinely hate the controls here, and with steam it makes it even more buggy. Probrably last ever thought for this is I had a thought when playing especially the paramamit outside with emu is that my mom would've loved this game if I told her to play this one and I can imagine it to on how it would play out, like seriously i can imagine it and now i regret and wish i got her to play the remake 9/10 - Quick save, Load Quick save? go to menu, load quicksave? press it, are you sure you want to load the quicksave? MF YES
This is Oddworld Abe's Oddysee with a fresh coat of paint more or less The original Abe's Oddysee had 2D sprites with pre-rendered backgrounds, whereas New N Tasty is obviously all 3D modelled. New N Tasty also has continuous screen scrolling as opposed to Oddysee's square segmented level layouts. There's now continuous movement as opposed to the almost grid limited positions of movement of the original game(Not to imply the original movement mechanics for the original are bad) If you know the original like the back of your hand, then you know what to expect with the level layouts and can breeze through it The OST for New N Tasty is entirely redone and expanded from the original Abe's Oddysee OST. It is still dynamic, changing based on statuses like controlling an enemy via possession or being pursued by sligs/scrabs/paramites. The darker grittiness and color palette of the original has been brightened, most especially for Rupture Farms. Other areas of the game are much closer to the original color and look more or less. The art style is largely in-tact otherwise including perhaps one of the most important things: the sense of scale.
