Every landscape looks like a hand-painted postcard, bursting with rich colors and charming coastal details. Coupled with a warm, emotional musical score, the game creates an undeniably cozy and reflective atmosphere. The puzzle mechanics, like shaping the hills to guide the old man along his path, are pleasant, gentle, and never frustratingly hard. The Bad The score settles at a 7/10 because of two major shortcomings. First, the gameplay is entirely basic: you literally left-click or drag the terrain the entire time. There is very little challenge or mechanical depth, making the progression feel more like turning pages in a digital picture book than actually playing a game. Second, the emotional weight of the story is somewhat undercut by the cutscenes, which lack animation. Instead of fully realized cinematic moments, important narrative beats rely on static images that feel lifeless, missing an opportunity to actually pull you into the old man's emotional journey. Time & Achievements? It's short. 2.8 hours to 100%. An old man receives a letter, and upon reading it, he decides to head out, packing his belongings, and so it starts. This game leads the old man and us through his treasured memories, all in hopes of reaching his destination. We get to see his life in short images from his memory while he wanders across the land. The whole art of the game has something bittersweet that captures the feeling very well. I mean, I am nowhere near this age, but I wonder if this is what it feels like when looking back at a long(hopefully) happy life. It already sometimes feels this way when looking back at childhood. Somewhere far away but close at the same time. Well, before I get too sad about it, I'd better finish this review. As we lead him closer towards his goal, we have to shape the land to give him access to terrain he wouldn't be able to go to. Sometimes it's straightforward, but other times you have to think a bit to plan the next steps. Sheep might even dare to block your way! A fun train ride was also in the mix. It isn't a very long game, but the time you use to complete it couldn't have been better spent anywhere.
Note that I played the game twice.....once several years ago, and once just last week with the addition of achievements, thus the long play time; in reality it will only take you ~2 hours to finish the game. Old Man's Journey is a charming, tender-hearted puzzle game where you manipulate different layers of the environment, based on perspective, in order to create walking paths for an old man seeking to reunite with his estranged wife and daughter. It's more intuitive than that sounds ;-) ;-) The graphics are pleasant enough, the music is bog-standard but more than acceptable, and the gameplay is almost goldilocks perfect (not too hard, not too easy). One of the achievements may have you repeating the level two or three times to get it just right (the train level........IYKYK), but other than that the cheevos are perfectly doable (and guides exist if you need them), and a chapter select that came with the most recent update really facilitates this. It's not going to shatter anyone's mind or have them screaming its praises from the rooftops, but it is an enjoyable, touching puzzle game that totally respects your time. Highly recommended!
like many adventures, this one is about how adventure is not more important than your family. also, it's a nice, chill, non-ordinary puzzle game. it has only one gameplay idea, only one mechanic, but the devs are constantly trying to explore it differently and even challenge you sometimes. it's short, yes, but i think it's worth it.
