I think it could definitely be better. Some items are just very strong, to the point where you can have zero chess understanding and stomp your way through. I think there is potential for something great to be executed here, but honestly the systems are not deep enough and the balancing is quite far from polished. If you like chess, I would still recommend; for $12 this game delivers.

This was actually way more fun than I expected it to be, though I wasn't a fan of the "atomic chess" mode where the strategy pretty much just seems to be beeline straight for the king with your crazy explosive pieces and the game is over in the first 3 turns pretty much every time. I'm not very good at chess but I'm pretty good at roguelites so I found this game fun and interesting, but was occasionally annoyed that the computer was better at the chess strategy than me, and mostly just aimed to build my board to be strong to make up for not wanting to think 3 moves ahead in the chess.

I think this game was made for me. I seem to do pretty well (given the % of players with achievements), but it frustrates me to no end. I think knowing how to play chess at a reasonable level is important (table stakes), but the addition of the new pieces and their modifiers definitely makes it impossible to just rely on chess skill. I can't stand "man" (when Black has them), I don't know how to use vampires or buffalo effectively, and I HATE the slippery/banana variant. But it is very satisfying to demote multiple pieces to pawns and make 2 queens of my own in the final boss battle. PS - the duck scenario is the easiest one of all. Being able to block AND get another move in, that's unstoppable. Not sure I'll rack up as many hours with this as Balatro, but I will try.
