**WARNING: THIS GAME TAKES SOME GETTING USED TO.** There was a period about halfway through my playtime where I thought to myself, "Am I playing this all wrong? Why are things not working as I intend them to?" I was just coming off of "Dawn of Man," saw many similarities between the two, and figured the same general rules applied here. I had successfully established large colonies on the first three planets, the whole time fighting with the efficiency of said colonies. I don't have enough ores or starches for metals and bioplastics -- oh, wait, now I'm producing wayyyy too many of both and still don't have enough processed materials coming out the other end. Clearly, this is the game's fault, not mine. Then it clicked. Energy conservation is the key here. Energy -- your base's, your workers, your bots -- is the second most valuable resource in the game. The goal is to create the shortest possible path between production chains, to increase the efficiency of your colonists while also giving them time to eat and rest. A well-managed colony of 20 astronauts, with clean paths and well-managed production chains, will be far more efficient than a poorly-managed colony of 100 with inefficient pathing and badly-planned production chains, no matter how many mines, bio domes, and processing plants you have. The most valuable resource, besides food and water, is the colonists themselves. It matters how many you have of each, since that spread will affect how efficiently your colonists work. For example, as one mine can handle a maximum of three workers, and a small processing plant can handle four workers, an efficient starting production chain for metals (and bioplastics) would include at least seven workers. That's not including the biologists, who have to grow the starch for bioplastics, or engineers, who then turn that metal and bioplastic into new structures, or more complex resources via the factory and robotics facility. Also, building too many components in internal structures too soon, without having the colonists to support those components, can greatly affect the efficiency of your colony. All of that said, if you can deal with the crushing anxiety of a mid-night power outage that threatens to suffocate your entire colony, the impending doom of a radioactive solar flare, the relentless devastation of methane-fueled lightning storms as you wonder on behalf of your colonists why you chose this life, or a couple of hooligans somehow mowing down your population of 80+ people, then is is the game for you.

⭐ 9/10 – I Built a Colony and Everyone Immediately Forgot How Doors Work ⭐ Planetbase is a calm, thoughtful colony builder that slowly lulls you into a false sense of security… right before your entire population suffocates because one guy couldn’t be bothered walking to the oxygen generator. You land on a hostile planet with nothing, build a thriving space colony, and then spend the rest of the game micromanaging airlocks, power cables, and the emotional wellbeing of people who absolutely refuse to wear helmets when stepping outside. It’s beautiful. It’s stressful. It’s space management at its finest. The pacing is excellent — early game survival feels tense, mid-game is satisfying, and late game is basically “How did I build something this fragile?” Solar flares will humble you. Sandstorms will ruin your day. And traders will arrive with everything you need… except the thing you’re actually short on. Despite the occasional AI-induced chaos, Planetbase nails atmosphere. The music is chill, the visuals are clean, and watching your colony survive against the odds is genuinely rewarding. When it works, you feel like a genius. When it doesn’t, you feel like a very well-intentioned space idiot. If you enjoy colony sims where success is measured in “how long did nobody die today?”, Planetbase is absolutely worth your time. Recommended for fans of slow-burn strategy, existential base design, and blaming oxygen shortages on literally everyone except yourself.

Very fun, I love to come back and play this game once a year or so. Ignore all the "poor AI" reviews and take some time to learn how to play. However, there is room for improvement. Please devs implement a way to avoid overproduction of resources in Planetbase 2. Also the game gets repetitive at some point.
