It's a classic for a reason. The translation is rather wonky but the art is gorgeous and the sheer number of different endings is staggering. Overall, it's a charming experience and feels like a peek into a bygone age of game making.

Beware--this game will suck you in in the most frustrating way possible. It has a ton of Steam glitches, I keep getting endings the wiki says I shouldn't have been able to get, and there's all kinds of sexist bs (is anyone going to explain why my 13 year old being sexually assaulted by a bandit somehow RAISES her sexiness score?) in a way that only a mid-90s game can have. And yet... it is insanely fun. The diversity of endings, challenging scenarios and charming atmosphere all make this game a true sucks-you-in experience. I might not go for every ending, but I definitely sank enough time into the game to warrant the price point. The translation on this version is kind of awful but it's legible, and with some exceptions the wiki is helpful enough that you can pick up on how everything works with some trial and error. Certainly not bad enough to warrant paying twenty extra dollars for Regenerate, unless you can pick it up on sale. Just make sure your daughter gets married to the prince or the dragon. Otherwise you risk getting the secret grooming endings. And no, anti-censorship stans, I don't think their inclusion is a hill we need to die on.

As far as Childlife Sim type games go, I consider this game as the definition of the genre. It's really in-depth and has a LOT of different endings. That said though, it only does one thing really well. There's a lot of things this game doesn't have that modern games are expected to do. So if you're expecting a game with an interesting narrative, defined characters, animated cutscenes, or any form of tutorial, you won't find it here. The art style is also VERY 80's retro anime. Which I absolutely LOVE, but younger generations might not enjoy that style of art anymore. That said though, while it only does one thing repeatedly the entire game, it does that one thing really well. You have your daughter do housework to increase stats to get a job. Then she increases her stats at the job to make money. Then she uses that money to take classes to further increase her stats. Then, roughly about a year after doing this stuff, you can start doing Errantry jobs which allow you to hunt for treasure chests, slay monsters, and even rob merchants. Then you spend some time lowering any Sin you've earned so that you can have a GOOD ending. lol The complexity of the game is balancing all her stats so that she doesn't run away, become a degenerate, or fail at the annual tournament. And that's pretty fun. There are encounters with npcs that happen every so often, and seems random, but these encounters happen because you met a stat threshold. For example, you'll be visited by Dominov the Kitchen Demon if you focus too much on the Cooking and Cleaning skills. Overall, this is a good game to just play in the background while watching TV. The only thing you have to pay attention to are your daughter's stats and plan around those stats. So, not a hard game by any means, but the depth of things you can have her do and the endings that result from the actions you took in the 8 years you spend with your daughter is entertaining. Entertaining in a passive way. The best way to describe the feeling is like a more fleshed out Tomagachi that can can "evolve" or turn into something at the end of it's lifespan. You don't get to enjoy the evolved form for very long, but it's nice to see how your daughter turned out in the end. Then you can restart and do something a little different with the next kid. All in all, I enjoyed this game a lot when I was a kid. But as an adult, I'm enjoying this game as if it was a mobile game. I use it to kill time between appointments or if I'm waiting for a callback about something. In this regard, I still think this game still holds up, as it's just entertaining enough to feel a little bit invested for a while before doing other things.
