Aug. 2025
Pro Cycling Manager 2020 is a complex and detailed simulation game that places players in the role of a cycling team manager, offering a highly granular experience that goes well beyond simply watching riders pedal through stages. At its core, the game is about making strategic decisions day by day, season by season, and race by race to guide your team to glory. From managing rosters, training plans, and sponsor expectations to fine-tuning race tactics and scouting young talent, there’s a staggering amount of depth here for fans of the sport. However, as with many niche simulation titles, this depth is both the game's greatest strength and its most divisive trait. What immediately sets this edition apart is its refined user interface and the introduction of features meant to streamline the managerial workload. The assistant manager, for example, can automate race registration and other tasks, which proves helpful during the long, grind-heavy career campaigns. This helps reduce the tedium of calendar micromanagement and allows players to focus more on strategic planning. Morale has also been introduced as a new dynamic, where riders will voice concerns, request rest, or demand specific roles in races. Managing these relationships becomes as important as managing form and stats, adding another layer of realism to the managerial experience. While not revolutionary, these additions do breathe a bit of life into what has traditionally been a fairly mechanical sim. The racing itself is represented with a 3D engine that allows players to view and influence live races. Although the graphics are dated by modern standards, they serve the gameplay well enough. You can issue team orders in real-time, decide when to conserve energy or go for a breakaway, and reposition riders based on evolving peloton dynamics. Races are tense and can swing wildly based on tactics and timing. Fatigue management is crucial—push a rider too hard early in a race and they’ll fade long before the finish. On the flip side, wait too long and you may miss a critical opportunity to chase down a breakaway. The AI has seen subtle improvements over previous years, with opponents occasionally employing more aggressive tactics, though it still occasionally falls into predictable patterns. Outside of races, the game features a robust set of management tools. You'll handle team finances, negotiate contracts, and balance sponsor expectations. New riders can be scouted and developed over time, although the development system still feels somewhat limited. Young riders don’t have particularly distinct personalities or growth curves beyond raw stats, which makes the scouting process less immersive than it could be. The training system allows for some customization, but the results can feel a bit opaque, leaving players unsure whether specific regimens are making a real difference. Despite that, developing a homegrown star and seeing them rise through the ranks is one of the most satisfying elements in the long-term campaign. The Pro Cyclist mode offers a more focused, RPG-like experience where you manage the career of a single rider. This mode strips away the broader team responsibilities and allows players to dive deep into individual progression. Earning points to improve specific skills, managing relationships with team staff, and building a reputation within the cycling world are all part of the journey. While the presentation in this mode is still limited, it provides a refreshing alternative for players who may find the full managerial campaign too overwhelming or time-consuming. However, Pro Cycling Manager 2020 is not without flaws. Technically, the game still struggles with stability. Load times can be long, especially when launching 3D races, and alt-tabbing or switching screens can lead to crashes. Performance hitches are not uncommon, even on capable hardware. Additionally, for returning players, the changes from previous versions may feel incremental at best. Many systems have been lightly touched up rather than fully overhauled, and some long-standing issues—like inconsistent AI behavior or uninspired rider development—remain. There is also a lack of polish in certain areas that keeps the game from reaching its full potential. The visual presentation, while serviceable, is clearly running on an aging engine. Rider animations are stiff, the environments lack detail, and the audio is minimal and repetitive. These elements don't ruin the experience, but they do limit its appeal to anyone expecting the production quality of larger sports franchises. The same can be said for the menus, which, though improved, still feel clunky and overwhelming to new players. There is a steep learning curve here, and the lack of a proper tutorial or in-game guidance system makes it harder for newcomers to get up to speed. Ultimately, Pro Cycling Manager 2020 is a game built for a very specific audience—those who not only love professional cycling but also enjoy micromanaging stats, tactics, and logistics in a slow-paced, detail-oriented environment. For those players, the game offers hundreds of hours of content and an experience that no other title truly replicates. However, for casual gamers or anyone expecting a more dynamic or cinematic portrayal of the sport, the game’s deliberate pace, technical limitations, and overwhelming interface may prove too much of a barrier. Still, for devoted fans of the series and the sport, it remains one of the most thorough and engaging cycling simulations available. Rating: 8/10
