Despite it's age and apparent simplicity, this game still holds up. What I like: - The music is actually kind of amazing. There aren't too many tracks, but the ones that are there are memorable and on the right side of a bit cheesy. I unironically love it. - While facing computer-controlled components is the majority of the game, there are a bunch of other variations that you can do optionally to gain and improve skills. There's 'clear the board' puzzles, a mode where your turns are timed, and one which introduces an extra 8th object you can create doing 4 and 5 matches. This keeps the game from getting too stale. - The game has a large variety of different builds; the stats and abilities you get start simple based on your class, but you get to customize stat allocation each level and collect extra spells from enemies you capture and creatures you recruit, and your chosen equipment also has an effect. So you can get really creative coming up with an interesting strategy. - There's actually quite a few characters in the game you interact with as part of side quests. Many join you, and help you in battle. - Steam says the game doesn't support controllers, but if you use anything it thinks is an xbox controller, the game works perfectly fine. - The game's graphics aren't super amazing, but the artwork of the creaturs and characters is generally pretty well done. What I dislike: - The game has an overabundance of helms and armors that just do very small damage reductions. - Some of the enemy types you fight seem to excel at stretching the match out unnecessarily - The plot is just a step above basic, and the dialogue's nothing super special. - One mechanic that I don't like is what happens when the board no longer has any valid moves. When this happens, the entire board clears, and so does any mana you've accumulated. This means you and your opponent both have to start rebuilding your reserves. It's not a full restart, but it's very disruptive and extends the match time. Especially if it happens in more than one match. - You can conquer cities you find to access some additional game modes and options. Conquering some of them is rather difficult, and the game allows cities to go into revolt meaning you have to go reconquer them. This is annoying, as often the path to get to the city requires multiple fights. It just felt like a chore. - Late in the game, a lot of enemies have high resistance to different mana types. Depending on the enemy and resistance level, many spellcasts will fail. You lose all the mana trying to cast it and you lose your turn. It feels very unfair, as it can invalidate a lot of strategies. The final boss especially tends to just block almost every cast you do. - There is a feature (you can turn it off) that will indicate a piece you can move if you take too long on your turn. This will sound paranoid, but...I swear, 80% of the time if you take the suggested move, you will end up regretting it. It seems to always line up a free turn, extra damage, or wildcards for the opponent. I found myself actively avoiding any recommended move the game would give me to minimize the potential side effects it would cause. Overall, if you have a good tolerance for randomness and like the idea of a fairly complex system on top of a very simple concept, this game is a great option.

Actually a peak game. On the surface its just a gem matching game. But its actually more like an RPG with a levelling system, classes, skills, stat points and so much more. Really hard if I'm being honest but a brilliant game all around.

> boot up the game > "boy I sure can't wait to fight a boss today!" > have to fight 8 minotaurs on the way to the boss > reach the boss > boss fight is exactly the same as fighting the minotaurs but they steal all the pieces > beat the boss > consequence of beating the boss is that your best friends asks you to help him kill himself > agree > enter fight to help him kill himself > fail > "you have been ambushed by a minotaur" 10/10 game would recommend

Quite literally the most addictive video game I ever played. I have hundred of hours on the Nintendo DS version, and I could have easily had more if I didn't lose the game cartridge. This game is the epitome of "one more round". You accomplish something and you just want to keep going. This game will beat you down, and you will get back up each time determined to beat the brakes off that stupid skeleton that got three 4-in-a-rows, two 5-in-a-rows, and a heroic effort, because you foolishly decided to match 3 gold coins off in a corner of the grid. Every move is the wrong move. You think you're playing big brain? Nah, that move you just did set up the CPU for a cascade of perfect drops that will cost you half your life bar and prevent you from taking a turn for a whole minute. The computer definitely cheats, and that is a good thing. Every class can become God-Tier broken by the midgame, but some definitely start off better than others. That said, your goal is to cheat the computer right back. Beat it at its own game. Steal every turn, transform every gem to your primary mana and create your own 4 and 5 of a kinds over and over so that they have no chance to play the game. This game will ruin your life. You're going be driving down the road and when you hit the traffic light, you'll wonder why you didn't get the 3 red mana you needed right before plowing into a Brinks Security transport truck and having 2 armed guards jump out and beat you senselessly with big burlap sacks with dollar signs painted on the side.

This runs incredibly well on steam deck. Although it says it’s not supported, I can confirm it’s fully supported with a controller too. This is such an old puzzle game but a classic for me. Much better than bejeweled, but it is just as captivating. One problem: you need to be steady with the cursor as some cities may be difficult to click on. Instead of clicking on them, you need to be a bit away from them to actually click on it. A bit frustrating but it works.
