Quest Master is a great Zelda-like dungeon-building game that feels wonderfully reminiscent of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Its pixel art, clever mechanics, and intuitive creator tools make crafting and exploring dungeons equally fun. A must-play for fans of classic top-down Zelda adventures who’ve always wanted to design their own.

I've known about this game for a while now, but only now did I find an excuse to finally buy it. See, when I first saw it, my reaction was "oh cool, diet Zelda Maker!" You'd probably say the same. But listen. Don't you dare put the word "diet" near this game. This is not something to simply satisfy you if you want a Zelda Maker. This IS that. This is ENTIRELY what you want from that. It will scratch that itch as much as an official Zelda Maker would, and in some ways it'll even do it better. "Early access" is a scary term, and occasionally you can feel it here, with some minor sound issues here and there and some dungeon parts feeling a little lacking in options (namely bosses, there's only four as of writing this.) But do not let that distract you from how much this game NAILS the vibes & design philosophies of both Zelda and Mario Maker at the same time. The editor is incredibly well-designed, there's so many different options yet it never feels overwhelming once you start playing around with it. The different dungeon themes feel like they were ripped straight from Zelda, yet for most part also feel totally unique in their own right. The dungeon parts are all interesting on their own, but just like Mario Maker they can be combined to make totally new challenges as well. And unlike Mario Maker, the things you can do in this game aren't just options in a series of menus, they're actually implemented into a hub area. The editor is in the Quest Master's house, the user-made dungeons are on a little signpost outside, there's an NPC that'll hatch the pets you can collect in the game, it's super cute. I love Mario Maker, but it's very much a game before it's a tool. Nintendo restricts a lot of what you can do to make sure you have the experience they want you to have (and also keep things clean for the kids.) That's not the case in Quest Master, you won't be held back by arbitrary limitations here. You're given a ton of space to work with, plenty of floors, an unbelievable number of ways to trigger events, this game is so much more malleable as a tool than Mario Maker without sacrificing the inherent fun of creating a level. The one downside to all this is that making a dungeon is a lot more complicated and time-consuming than making a platformer level. So before you buy, consider if you really have the capacity to make a full Zelda dungeon. If you do, I promise this game will be your best friend. 9.9/10, thank you for having the courage to let me add custom text to signs.

The developer responded very quickly to a bad review I originally posted in regards to the new content that was locked until trying a mini game. I am changing my review based on how quickly the developer responded and the fact that I still do enjoy building dungeons with the editor. I look forward to the game's completion and the over world.

This game is basically the Zelda Maker that N* never released. If you love 2D Zelda games, this is truly an endless experience, just like Mario Maker. The Steam Workshop even allows you to turn your main character into Link himself using community-made mods. A huge portion of the dungeons created by players are inspired by Zelda, filled with references, or even full recreations of the original dungeons. If you're a fan of 2D Zelda games, this is an absolute must-play! The developers' passion and support for this game are simply incredible. It receives updates almost every week, and it's amazing how they constantly add both small improvements and major new features—whether in the dungeon editor or in gameplay content. A huge thank you to the developers! I can’t wait for the 1.0 release. As a lifelong Zelda fan, I’m beyond happy that this game exists, and it keeps getting better every day!

Ive been playing this game quite a bit, and I enjoy the gameplay and the creation system! Its really expandable, and you can make quite a few puzzles and rooms out of it. As a HUGE Game design nerd I love level designer games, however I found some things slightly lacking. While I still reccomend this game, there are some things I wish I could do, which ill list here. - Music Control: You cant really control what song is playing in what room. Theres only a few songs, but you dont have any control over whether which themes songs are playing where. What if I want a combat theme to play in a room full of traps? What if I want a specific theme from another biome to play for a boss fight? Little things like that would go a long way. - A search function: I often find myself flipping through menu to menu to try to find one specific object.. a search bar in the maker mode menu would be SO INCREDIBLY helpful for finding something I can only remember the name of. - Enemy Control: Dont get me wrong, enemy variety and behavior are great! Theres alot to work with here! but I kind of wish we could play with a bit more than the movement and variants of enemies. I think it'd be neat to be able to change their size, health, and damage for example, so you could make a mini-boss out of a bigger, stronger enemy! - "Themes": While I apperciate the ability to use these many unique themes and decorations.. being locked to one at a time I feel is a little outdated. If people want to stick to 1 theme, thats cool! But I think a option to make a dungeon thats multi-themed would be cool. You could make a whole campaign out of various themes, maybe with outdoor areas (if they plan to add those) to facilitate the transitions! But besides my gripes that these things are lacking, this game is good. I enjoy the state its in now! Theres lots of themes to play with, many mechanics to explore, and I havent even finished making my first dungeon yet beacause ive had so much fun thinking up of puzzles! If you enjoy classic-topdown Zelda games, im sure you'll also find playing the dungeons quite alot of fun! The Devs are also planning to make a Singleplayer campaign with the same tools avaliable in the game, so there seems to only be room to grow for Quest Master! I hope they keep it up! :D
