This is a very well done digital adaption of Calico, the board game. Calico is one of my favorite brain burners. It looks deceptively easy, especially with its colorful presentation, but it's very challenging to maximize one's score in this creative puzzle game. Placing colors or patterns in the right order is easy. Arranging both colors and patterns matching the required design is already much harder. And doing so while also collecting buttons and sneaking in a couple of the bonus objectives is another step up, one that requires sharp thinking and a lot of practice. Besides the solo mode that is identical to the physical board game's single player mode (the only change is how tiles are discarded), this digital adaption includes up to three AI opponents that come in three difficulties, a story mode with a campaign, and a set of 20 progressively harder missions with specific objectives. The game also supports online multiplayer. Besides real-time and asynchronous (turn-based) modes with matchmaking, you can also play custom games with others. In addition, there is a weekly challenge with changing rules where you need to try to get the highest score. This is a variation of the game's solo mode, except that you compete with others for the week's kitty crown. The only feature I'm missing from the game is a stats tracker or at least a local high score list, but it's far from a deal breaker. This is a great digital adaption of Calico and if you enjoy good puzzle games or are already a fan of the physical board game, this is an easy purchase that you won't regret.

Quilts and Cats of Calico, developed by Monster Couch and published alongside Flatout Games, takes the award-winning Calico board game and thoughtfully reimagines it for a digital format, transforming what was already an elegant tabletop puzzle into a warm, character-driven experience. Rather than simply replicating the rules and visuals, the adaptation uses interactivity, animation, and worldbuilding to create a cozy space that feels lived in, playful, and emotionally inviting. From the first moments, it makes clear that quilting here is not merely a strategic exercise—it is a comforting ritual, a way of connecting people, places, and, of course, the cats who love nothing more than curling up on a soft handmade blanket. The game embraces gentleness without sacrificing intellectual engagement, which gives it a unique identity in a landscape where puzzle games often lean toward high pressure or abstraction. The strategic foundation remains intact and deeply rewarding. Players must carefully place hexagonal patch tiles, balancing color groupings, fabric patterns, and objective requirements to score points through buttons or by attracting specific cats. Each move demands consideration—fulfilling one condition often jeopardizes another, and it becomes a subtle balancing act of optimization, improvisation, and long-term planning. The puzzle framework offers endless small dilemmas: Should you complete a button set or pivot to match a cat’s preferred pattern? Do you gamble on future tile draws or secure a lower-value placement now? Every finished quilt feels like a personal accomplishment, not just because it earns points, but because it visually reflects the decisions, risks, and compromises made along the way. The difficulty curve is approachable, but mastery invites a deeper appreciation for spatial logic and probability, rewarding replay without ever feeling punitive. What elevates this adaptation beyond its tabletop origins is the presence of the cats themselves. Instead of existing solely as scoring icons, they animate, wander, roll, stretch, and occasionally sprawl over the board, responding to blankets as real animals would. Their behavior adds light humor and comforting unpredictability, softening the analytical nature of the puzzle. Players can even design their own feline companions—choosing coat patterns, colors, names, and quirks—making them feel like treasured pets rather than abstract objectives. The campaign introduces a small but charming narrative built around townspeople and their relationships with quilting, each level framed like a personal story rather than a purely mechanical challenge. These flourishes turn the game into a welcoming environment, something closer to a hobby, craft, or quiet gathering than a competitive puzzle. Aesthetically, Quilts and Cats of Calico is one of the most visually soothing strategy titles available. Its art direction blends hand-drawn charm with tactile digital textures, making each quilt look soft enough to touch. The fabric tiles feature subtle stitching and color variations, and the UI uses rounded shapes, warm palettes, and minimal clutter to reduce cognitive overwhelm. Animation is lively without disrupting clarity—cats move with personality, buttons shimmer gently, and board transitions feel smooth and unhurried. Sound design completes the atmosphere: soft acoustic melodies, gentle chimes, purring audio cues, and unobtrusive ambient effects create a sensory blanket of calm. The audio never distracts from thinking; instead, it encourages relaxation and steady pacing, supporting the game’s meditative rhythm. Multiplayer, both local and online, expands the experience without compromising its accessible tone. Competitive play emphasizes thoughtful decisions rather than aggressive interference, giving matches a friendly, conversational quality reminiscent of board game nights rather than esports arenas. Turn-based structure and clean rule presentation ensure that even new players can participate confidently. Quality-of-life features—tutorials, adjustable difficulty, clear iconography, and well-paced onboarding—make the game especially welcoming to those unfamiliar with modern puzzle or board games. Meanwhile, advanced challenges and scoring optimization keep veterans engaged long after they understand the fundamentals. It is one of the rare strategy games where accessibility and depth coexist without one undermining the other. Some players may find its pacing too relaxed or its structure too consistent over long play sessions. Because the core loop focuses on tile placement, resource-free decision-making, and incremental scoring, those seeking narrative drama, mechanical escalation, or surprising twists may perceive repetition. The campaign’s storytelling, while charming, remains intentionally light and supportive rather than emotionally or thematically ambitious. Yet these qualities are less shortcomings than expressions of the game’s design philosophy—this is a puzzle experience meant to soothe rather than agitate, to reward reflection rather than reaction. Ultimately, Quilts and Cats of Calico succeeds because it understands the emotional dimension of gaming as much as the mechanical one. It offers a strategic challenge wrapped in softness, humor, creativity, and gentle companionship. It celebrates domestic creativity—fabric, craft, texture, memory—while acknowledging that cats will always insert themselves into any project, whether welcome or not. It honors the original board game’s brilliance, but also enhances it through animation, personality, and interactivity, proving that digital adaptations can enrich rather than merely reproduce. For puzzle lovers, board game fans, cozy-aesthetic enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a low-stress but mentally satisfying experience, Quilts and Cats of Calico is a delight—thoughtfully designed, lovingly assembled, and endlessly comforting. It is a game to savor slowly, like a handmade quilt—stitched with intention, warmth, and a little bit of playful chaos courtesy of the cats who refuse to leave it alone. Rating: 9/10

This is a very cool puzzle/strategy game. Starts out simple, but once the objectives are added it can get pretty tough. Added bonus, you can pet the cats while playing. Just be careful, they get really annoyed when you place tiles down next to them :)
