Short version: Buy it, read it, and let it go. 6,8/10, with the lingering thought: “It could have been better.” Much better, I assumed. =___= ... I... feel so disappointed right now. My first 10 hours with this game could easily be considered peak. I was hooked. But the endings, especially the true ending just fell apart under so many... ridiculous connections. It felt as if the game itself was laughing in my face: “Oh, come on. You thought I was actually going to give you something good?” Man... I was so sad. It really could have been better. There was so much potential, and the ending felt like a surprisingly harsh slap in the face. My reaction was basically: “Is my brain a joke to you? You got me hyped just to drag me down? That's hardcore.” Don't get me wrong if this review sounds like I hated the game. I actually DO like it, and I still recommend it. As the MC says something along the lines of: "liking someone is different from dating someone." Maybe that's exactly how I feel about this game. I still recommend playing it. Good and bad sometimes go hand in hand, so I guess you just accept both as part of the journey. What I really liked was the narrative flow. It's incredibly engaging and constantly leads the reader toward multiple possibilities and interpretations. Our brains love novelty, and this game knows how to exploit that very well. I especially respected how well-crafted the first two endings were. HOWEVER. The later endings and explanations feel like the story is suddenly pouring information over your head and expecting you to accept everything simply because “well, that's what the story says.” Some of those connections were just... ridiculous to me. If you want another game with a similar kind of theme, I think Gnosia does it better. At the very least, its ending made me feel respected as a reader. And no, I personally don't think there is much actual romance in this novel. Romance is fun. I'm a hopeless romantic reader. But this is a no-no-no romance for me. What I see is much closer to a survival bond mixed with the suspension-bridge effect. shared danger, adrenaline, dependence, and intense attachment created under extreme circumstances. People may love that kind of adrenaline-fueled ‘love.’ Not me. Though maybe I’m reading it wrong (!?) the story never really started as a love story anyway. It started as a myth. Mannnn I need good food after reading this visual novel.
This game ruined an entire week of my life. I made the terrible decision to start playing this game on a Sunday night and I got no sleep. The writing was so well done that I couldn't stop thinking about this game. During work I thought constantly about the overall mystery of the game and finally finished it at the end of that week. If you do play this game, my recommendation would be to start on a Friday so you have the whole weekend to enjoy it.
You will like this game if you enjoy mafia/werewolf games, death games, mysteries, and urban legends. The first three chapters were pretty well done (although I personally liked the first two more), but the fourth chapter (the ending) was a HUGE letdown. I'd still recommend this game, though. It's like having a great vacation and getting diarrhea on the last day—you'd still say it was an overall good vacation with a little bit of crap mixed in, right? This game is kind of like that.
The story has a bunch of twists, loved it. Lots of details and setup, and everything is tied together at the end. After getting to the ending, there's the extra option to see what different characters were thinking during crucial story moments (and it's even possible to skip the regular story bits to get to these extra ones immediately). That was so good, I really wish all visual novels had something like that.
Unique visual novel with a real-life take on the Werewolf game. My absolute favorite part has to be the many battle of wits scenes between smart characters, including the protagonist. The protagonist is highly introspective, which is a treat. Also, once you finish the game, you can replay the game with additional content - internal monologues of characters which give you more insight into their motives and behavior (don't worry, you get to skip dialogue you've already read). Finishing the game also unlocks short stories which serve as a mini-sequel. The art style and music really contribute to the atmosphere. The divisive part is probably the last 10% of the game. Personally I'm ok with the change in direction, but I can somewhat understand why some may not appreciate it. Regardless, I'll highly recommend the game for the other 90%. Another inconvenience is that you cannot change languages halfway (you choose at the start and that's it). Oh, and stay away from this game if you can't stand blood and horror, though the latter is rather limited.
