Dec. 2025
I have played 80 hours at the time of this review, this is what I have learned: I will start with what I dislike about it. You cannot cook, process, game meat or goat meat. And there is no smokehouse, which makes no sense, it should be in the game. To be able to make smoked meats just comes with ranching. Regarding meats: Deer meat could be made into venison roasts, hamburgers, and jerky and not just sold as game meat. Bear meat and goat meat are undesirable so those two make sense not to process to sell. Pelts, why are pelts and hides not in the game? We could sell pelts and hides to the vendors the same way we sell them processed foods. Roads/pathways why are these not in the game? We should be able to make roads around our plot and pathways. Why aren't all the possible oil sites on the map as darker areas? That is so annoying. Speaking of the map, why in Southwest cant we pin on the map? I walked half of the map looking for my vehicle after going hiking for bees because the map doesn't show your vehicle nor can you mark the map like you can in legacy. My vehicle is still out there somewhere, I gave up looking for it and bought another one (and no recall vehicle button either). Why is the newest map Southwestern so barren and void of animals, bees, trees, a town, etc? It is like the devs said "You want a new area, sure, here ya go" and gave a barren map and said "Have at it". It feels like no thought or love went into it at all. And what is up with Southwestern's dust storms constantly? Southwestern was just no fun at all to play. And hardly any color at all, you can barely pick out a fox or wolf (on the very rare occasion you do get to see one) They blend right in to the washed out faded out brush. And why are bees so scarce on both the legacy and the Southwest maps? And why do they not respawn? Why does nothing respawn? It is ridiculous. Why don't trees respawn in the wild? I understand why they don't respawn on the farms, the game is designed for us to plant, makes sense. If you aren't going to have them respawn in the wild, at least let us plant to keep it repopulated and not look so desolate and barren. Why is there no indicator above animals heads (needs milked/milked) because milking in the fenced in outdoor pens, once they are milked and run back into the crowd you waste so much time trying to decipher which have been milked and which haven't. At least make tethers as to where we can tether them to the fences to keep them separated. And a male and female indicator would be nice as well (especially on the babies). Signs, why can we not make smaller signs, we can make the large ones which is better than none, but I would like to have ones about half that size. Building (or lack thereof) in my 40 plus years of gaming, I have never seen such a lack luster, pretty much non existent blueprint book (flyer pamphlet really). In order to have furniture, decor, lamps, rugs, anything you are forced to use one of the prebuilts. And then you cannot arrange any of it to your liking because nothing in the game has interaction with most objects outside of farming. Why can you not pick up and move anything, especially things we do build (like a building, bookcase, flower pots, curing station, etc) you have to tear it all down and rebuild it. Why is there no grid for building? Almost nothing "snaps" in, you have to fight with the mouse to do your best to line things up. And we have glass in the game, but we cannot add glass to our windows, what the heck is that all about? Unless you want huge greenhouse windows as house windows, your only 2 options are open holes with no glass or an add on that is wooden that when closed looks like a condemned boarded up house and when opened looks like someone took house shutters and installed them wrong. Very poor design. Large craters that cannot be levelled or filled in (which wastes a lot of build room) I have 2 on my property that look like gigantic meteor's forged holes on my plot and I cannot do anything about them and I cannot build over them. A terrain tool (like a hoe) would be useful. The riding mower is useless, I have grass to my knees and it does not cut grass at all anywhere on my plot. And no raising or lowering of the blade, and the speed, I can crawl faster than this thing drives, even if it did work, there are no speeds on it and it would take days to mow the plot. Useless garbage add on really. We need a large tractor mower that actually cuts grass and goes faster. Gathering poop is a nightmare especially inside the pens. It would have been so much easier to have a composter in or near the pens that auto collects the poop. And when holding a basket in the coops or near them, it should just auto collect the eggs. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten stuck inside these pens trying to get poop and eggs. Makes the game not fun at that point. It is 2025 and developers seem to care less and less. It is quality of life things that keep these games alive and get recommended more often than not. It is the lack luster that loses its player base. I know there is more of the bad things (believe me) but lets get into the good now. The sounds, the sound effects are on point, one of the top 10 in the games I have played like this. The cycle of life, from buying, to breeding, to the pregnancy, to the birth, to the babies, to the adults, to the milking, shearing, checking for fertile eggs, the auto feeders and watering, the processing and selling of your goods, all really good stuff. Pretty well done in those areas. Even the crops and greenhouse, I must put in the good things, the cycles are pretty good as well. From tilling to fertilizing, to seeding, to growing, to harvesting, to selling. Not bad at all really. And the final good I must say is that legacy is the one I would play, save your money and don't buy Southwestern, you'll be disappointed. While Legacy is lacking a lot of features, it is by far superior to Southwestern. I just wish we could have more than 1 lot at a time on legacy. I would make one plot my actual ranch and the other plot a tree orchard with bees and have 3 more crop plots to use. Legacy has a pin able map, more wildlife, an actual town (while not interactive) it is there and is esthetically pleasing compared to Southwester's 1/4 mile barren road with like 5 buildings. Legacy has a police like station, a post office, stores, food places, plus the 5 or so buildings that you actually do interact with (like I said, an actual town). The only thing I think it is missing is some NPC's just aimlessly walking around the town lol. Knowing all of these things, if you choose to buy this game, know that it is worth the $5 when it is on sale for the legacy (base game). And that, I will recommend. And lastly, it is a shame the modding community abandoned any further projects for this game after only just a handful (quite literally) of mods made. There is so much potential and fun things and quality of life improvements and building pieces and just so much (a lot that I have mentioned) for mod devs to play around with and create to make this game really get the love it deserves. But after seeing and playing Southwestern, I understand why the modding community said "Eh, why bother" Because it feels like the game devs didnt. I get it. Its just a shame.

I like the game. Although I get motion sick if I play for to long, There's room for improvement. In my opinion, I would like to see the fallowing: There should be an inventory. You should get at least 4 planks per log. You should get a "Starter kit" out of all the wood and materials that are already on the farm that you have to delete. you should be able to use that wood, metal, other materials from the house, old windmill, crates, barrels, boxes "trash" already on the farm. Also, you should be able to loot (with reset time) the dumpsters/trashcans/ junk from in town to help. "one man's trash is another man's treasure. Also... can we obtain and use that RV at the gas station? The Gas station- should be active. You should be able to get snacks and drinks from a teller.
