The game is good, but it lacks a tutorial that explains any of its even most basic mechanics. I'm assuming that will never be added, so the lion's share of the early game is going to be spent paused, reading tool-tips and watching supply lines to see what needs to be placed where and in what rotation. You shouldn't expect to survive during this period, as resources come in at a snail's pace and every building is extremely expensive. Buildings are also built instantly, even when paused, so you can't cancel if you make a mistake. Once it's down, you're only going to get a small portion of the cost back if you delete it. Personally, I find this lack of direction extremely annoying. This isn't a simple game you pick up and immediately understand. The only "tutorial" it includes is a glossary in the main menu that explains various mechanics and the game's story. Not everyone learns that way, some people need hands-on experience to have it set in. Some other people learn better through auditory information. On that point, it's just bad for accessibility. If your eyes are a little funky, you're in for a hell of trial and error. One other thing that the game does is make it so that all production buildings first deliver to the nearest storehouse or your castle. After that is done, a second delivery is made to the next portion of the supply chain. Almost every other game ever made with this system will simply allow deliveries from the production building to the first chain building that has an active request. When they don't do this, they make storage buildings have a reasonable cost and size that allows them to be placed near where they're needed. This game foregoes that and instead has the storehouse be oversized, overpriced and largely in the way while not allowing chain deliveries straight from production. Worst possible decision on how that could be handled, but okay. What redeems this game is its combat system. The units are all individuals and utilize the same combat system as you. That combat system being ripped straight from Dark Souls. It's based on stamina management and timing your strikes as well as your dodges and blocks. When you've mastered this, you can wipe out entire armies solo. Watching and participating in battles is the highlight of this game, and it even includes a sandbox battle tester where you can place down custom armies and watch them go at it, or join as one of the hero units for either side. So, should you buy it for the survival RTS portion? No, it's probably the worst example out there. Should you buy it for the large-scale battles and ability to lead your troops from the ground? Yes.

Reignfall is an ambitious entry into the real-time strategy and RPG hybrid genre, developed with a clear passion for blending deep tactical combat with rich character progression and a sprawling narrative. The game offers a unique twist on traditional RTS gameplay by emphasizing hero-driven battles within large-scale conflicts, encouraging players to carefully manage both individual units and overarching strategies. From its sprawling campaign to its detailed customization systems, Reignfall aims to provide an experience that satisfies both strategy enthusiasts and RPG fans looking for meaningful progression. At its foundation, Reignfall impresses with its setting and story. The game unfolds in a high-fantasy world torn apart by political intrigue, ancient magic, and brutal warfare. Players assume control of a faction struggling to reclaim dominance amid chaos, and the narrative explores themes of loyalty, power, and sacrifice through well-written characters and cutscenes. Unlike many RTS games that lean heavily on mechanics over story, Reignfall integrates its lore seamlessly into gameplay, making every mission feel like a piece of a larger saga rather than just a standalone challenge. The voice acting and cinematic sequences, while not blockbuster-level, add emotional weight and help immerse players in the unfolding drama. Visually, Reignfall offers a blend of detailed unit models, vibrant environments, and dynamic effects that enhance the sense of scale and urgency during battles. Whether commanding armies across lush forests, arid wastelands, or ruined citadels, the game’s aesthetics help communicate the mood and stakes of each conflict. The camera system and user interface are designed to support both micro-management of individual heroes and macro-level strategy, striking a balance that enables fluid control without overwhelming the player. Though the graphics are not cutting-edge, they suit the game’s tone and function well for clarity during intense skirmishes. Gameplay in Reignfall is where the title truly shines and, at times, reveals its complexities. The combat system requires thoughtful positioning, timing, and use of hero abilities to turn the tide against enemy forces. Heroes are not mere buffs to your army; they are central figures with their own skill trees, equipment, and special moves, offering a layer of RPG depth rarely seen in RTS games. Players must balance upgrading these heroes while managing troop deployments and resource gathering, creating a multi-faceted challenge that keeps the experience fresh over dozens of hours. The synergy between hero abilities and unit tactics is particularly rewarding, encouraging experimentation with different compositions and strategies. One notable strength of Reignfall is its diverse mission design. The campaign features a variety of objectives beyond simple “destroy all enemies” goals, including base defense, escort missions, stealthy infiltration, and timed challenges. This variety prevents monotony and encourages players to adapt their approach continually. The game’s AI, while occasionally predictable, presents a respectable challenge by employing diverse tactics and coordinating attacks that test player adaptability. Multiplayer modes further extend replayability, allowing players to pit their strategic acumen against human opponents, though the community is still growing and matchmaking can vary in quality. Resource management and base building form an essential pillar of the gameplay, but Reignfall approaches these systems with a streamlined focus that prioritizes fast-paced action over tedious micromanagement. This design choice keeps the flow engaging and accessible while retaining enough depth for strategy aficionados. Upgrading bases, managing economy, and securing key points on the map add meaningful decisions that complement combat without overshadowing it. Audio design also contributes to the immersive experience, with a soundtrack that captures the epic scale of battles and the emotional undertones of the story. Sound effects for spells, weapon clashes, and environmental ambience add to the tactical feedback and help players stay attuned to the battlefield. Voice lines for heroes and units enhance personality and bring the cast to life, though sometimes repetitive during longer campaigns. From a technical standpoint, Reignfall is generally stable, with responsive controls and minimal performance issues on recommended hardware. Occasional bugs and AI quirks appear but have not detracted significantly from the overall experience. The developers have shown commitment to updates and community engagement, promising improvements and new content, which bodes well for the game’s longevity. In conclusion, Reignfall stands out as a thoughtfully designed blend of real-time strategy and role-playing elements that offers a rich narrative and tactical depth. While it may not revolutionize either genre, it successfully carves out a unique niche by focusing on hero-centric battles and meaningful customization within a larger strategic framework. Players who enjoy intricate combat, character progression, and epic fantasy stories will find much to appreciate here. Though it occasionally struggles with pacing and AI complexity, Reignfall delivers a satisfying and immersive experience that rewards patience, planning, and creative strategy. For fans of hybrid strategy games, it represents a compelling journey into a war-torn world brimming with conflict and heroism. Rating: 8/10

TL:DR Dark souls meets Age of Empires the indie science experiment Great game, feels like tech demo a bit the dev was definetly experimenting with mechanics here. I think this has plenty of potential. I really wish there's gonna be a sequel for it because it deserves one for sure. With the current mechanics polished further it would be so cool. One tip for the dev if you want low poly graphix that is not an eyesore use Playstation 1 (PSX) graphix. With the right style and a UI that feels and sound like and old game it could a smash hit. I will be looking forward to your future games Matey.
