It is really interesting how a whole generation was so much inspired by the graphical adventures of the 90s. Part of that inspiration is seen in indie games like Resonance. The game has simple yet detailed pixel art old school graphics, atmospheric music, simple yet intuitive mechanics that include using the keyboard to type and the mouse to manipulate certain objects to solve puzzles, much of them using common sense. The game difficulty is well balanced and the story and how it unfolds keeps you hooked until the very end. This is definitely among the best point & click games I have ever played. Totally recommended if you are a fan of the genre.
I did enjoy some of this game, its characters and story were engaging, and I appreciated the twists and turns throughout. However, I found many of the puzzles frustrating. The manual switching between characters is a mechanic I’ve never liked in any game; here, it felt confusing and road blocked the narrative and made it harder to follow. The voice acting was decent nothing special, and the visuals have a classic style, which I liked to an extent, though they didn’t fully win me over and I love pre 00s PNC style. Overall, I’d give this a low recommendation. I’m glad I played it for the story alone, but it can be quite confusing at times, and a guide feels necessary in certain sections to progress. I believe there are multiple endings, but I was happy with the one I got.
Resonance takes many ideas from classic point and click adventures while adding some twists, such as multiple playable characters and a long and short term memory system. At heart it is a detective story, with the cast driving both puzzles and narrative. Some puzzles were confusing and I often needed a guide, but others were very satisfying. I liked the characters and story, though I wish there was more voice acting. It most reminded me of Technobabylon , though it does not quite reach the same level.
